The last time I entered a bug into a challenge PETA was outside my door... Or so it felt by the comments I received. However that will not stop me from trying to capture and or kill a pest for the sake of photography. But, Because we are expecting up to a foot of snow today I have a feeling finding a insect will be the challenge this week. Photographing it will be easy because it will be dead.

I'm in! This will be my first minimal editing challenge, excluding the "Straight from the Camera" challenge.

my predictions:
45% of shots will be macro
10% will be black and white

20% will be pure head-shots
30% will involve a leaf of some sort

15% ladybugs
20% grasshoppers
10% ants
15% flies
15% more than one insect
25% spiders (which will average 2.5 DNMC comments)

i'm gonna try for all of the above :-)

I'm wondering if spiders will be allowed as my friend says they are not insects but arachnids ?????

Pay attention in school Joe. Spiders are not insects.

Sooo why did someone just say that a certain percentage of the entries would be of spiders? Perhaps they arent insects but I'm positive that and image would not be DQed or ranked low just for including a spider. You can keep your smart ass comments to yourself, thanks..
I garantee you that there will be atleast one spider picture in the top ten.

I think you haven't been here long enough... :)

I'll take your bet and guarantee you a spider (without an insect) will NOT be in the Top 10. The drag of the DNMC vote will be too strong for even a great picture to overcome...

I started this thread by saying I thought a certain percentage would have spiders, but I also predicted they would get some DNMC comments. Spiders are not insects. It's up to each voter whether or not they are within the spirit of the challenge. People accepted initialisms in the acronym challenge. There's no way to know what people will accept or not, and if you are worried take the literal interpretation. Spiders will certainly be in the gray area. Or is it grey area?

So I would think that if you were to photograph a spider that pulling off two of its legs frist would show that you were at least trying to meet the challengeĆ¢€Ā¦right?

Yeah... sad commentary about a photography site isn't it?

I have been here a great deal longer than you, bud.
Forgot my password, I'm afraid.
Never submitted a photo until Contre-jour, but I've seen a fair amount of photographs in my lifetime.
This time of year with coldness still inhabiting a large area of the globe, spiders will be the most common /bug/ in many homes.
If someone wants to submit a photo for the insect challenge, they'll take whatever they can get.
Not to mention spider and web combination photos are usually very lovely.
You chose to start this argument by criticizing my education and being nit-picky about what creatures do and do not qualify as insects when I was simply trying to help members out.
I was giving obvious but reasonably helpful suggestions to members who want to submit but cant find insects. Thanks for the thanks, jerk..

heh, ya I forgot my password too. I'm guessing I've still been here longer than you unless you started when you were 12.

You may want to go back and notice I never "criticized your education". I simply said I didn't think Spiders would wind up in the top 10. The criticism was done by someone else...

Personally I think it's bad advice to tell someone to enter a spider if they can't find a bug if they care at all about their score. My advice would be to avoid that as I believe Spiders will get creamed in the voting. Now a good picture of a spider eating an insect might do pretty well...

EDIT to say I'm not even sure now that Joe's little spiel was directed at me. There were a number of us that disagreed with his spider opinion...

::Quickly hides spider photo deep in an encrypted vault::

Instead of getting our panties in a bunch over the final Top 10, why don't we all let the bug photos fall (fly or crawl) where they may and just enjoy the challenge.

(Otherwise, I'll have to buy all of you thongs!)

for me insect must be real insects.

So today I was out turning over rocks trying to find photogenic bugs. How desperate is that? Found one sort of beetley bug that promptly scurried away and a lot of centipedes ... or millipedes ... teensy little things with lots of legs, anyway. A couple of bees in the flowering trees (hey - that rhymed!), but they weren't inclined to pause/pose. One butterfly way out of camera range, and I think he must have been lost because I never saw any others ;-)

I can try again tomorrow but after that they're predicting tons of rain, and bugs will once again be very hard to locate. I am finding it a lot of work to get a decent picture of one measly little insect!

Wish it was a bird challenge; they're EVERYWHERE.

It depends on the voters but the challenge description does say "Get intimate with an insect or group of insects of your choice and photograph away."

There is nothing there that precludes the insect of your choice being stuffed animal insect.

Well thats my interpretation.

Bug zoo? Seriously?

In any case, I'm in. I've decided, however, that I really don't care for this whole minimal editing thing after all. Maybe I'll change my opinion after my shot of a spider being eaten by a stuffed insect wins the blue. :)

LOL...I did the same thing! Man those centipedes or millipede things can move fast! My neighbors think I'm nuts.

is a King Worm an insect?

I'll give the great outdoors one more shot, but the Bug Zoo is a great idea if that fails! Haven't been there in years.

Hmmm, just looked at their website and it seems the main exhibit is being renovated. Bug choices may be limited :-p
