I was wondering if anyone feels like me, that their Challenge shooting is the worst part of their portfolio?

I realized a while back that my Challenge shooting lacked in almost every way except for maybe 6 images that I like. There are a good amount of reasons...usually lack of time, paired with shorter periods of daylight but what really pisses me off I my lack of ideas.

Sometimes I get a decent idea but they're really slow coming...painfully slow and then wham...no time to shoot. Bummer.

Anyone in the same boat?

I guess its part of the whole process. For challenges we feel compelled to submit something. For our portfolio? Submit whatever you want. As such you have a broader ranger of shots to choose from, you can edit however you want and the picture can be take any time. Its almost like having a "Best of the Last 25 Years Challenge" without the actual competition.

yeah, but it doesnt really bother me as i dont really shoot for challenges so I can't really expect too much.

I would agree that taking for challenges results in an excessive number of poor images useful for no other purpose. :)

Same here, I shoot for my own personal pleasure. If something fits a challenge I might enter it. I used to try real hard to get something for most challenges. Now I find I am more relaxed without that added pressure to get something, anything, that I could enter.

I think for myself my challenge shots are actually the best part of my portfolio. I think the difference here (and pawdrix can correct me if I am wrong) but some people see a shot and take it. I find that I have to go find the shot that I am thinking of. I am starting to learn to see a shot but its slow coming.

In my case, the reverse is true... I have plenty of ideas, and my portfolio would suck if I hadn't been shooting for challenges to improve my skills. Many of my entries simply would not have existed if not for the challenge topics, and some are quite good for stock.

I guess my main prob is that I think I can take a Top 10 shot...maybe even a winner every now and again. At least hit some respectable territory but the time issue kills me and I'm jealous of those who can make it happen.

I think that and a few other issues limit my ability or desire to even try to think of an idea, since I can almost never make happen. I did buy lights recently and now I have to work on finding models that are willing to do screwy stuff.

I see a Challenge posted and I draw an immediate blank...like a vegetable. Bummer.

It'd be interesting to see how the entries differ in a challenge where only shots taken the week PRIOR to the challenge announcement could be entered. Only being able to pick from shots already taken would unboubtably change the look of a challenge.

Some of my challenge images only work for the particular challenge some are actually ok for my portfolio (and some others just aren't good for anything :)). But on a balance, entering a challenge is a great motivator for me to take the camera, go out and shoot. Sometimes I might get a great shot which would not be good for the intended challenge (and would not be submitted), but without the challenge it just wouldn't happen.

most of the time I'm really shooting for a challenge, and like to get creative. I've made lots of photo's (for a challenge) that I absolutely love and very happy to add to my portfolio.

last saturday my PF was judged by my teacher and she was amazed with my work. I realised 5 out of 11 were shot for a dpc-challenge..

One thing to try (and I'd like to try it for myself) is to do word association with the challenge title and see what comes up. Just write whatever comes to mind for 5 minutes straight and see what you get. I've done it for other things (writing mostly) but I think it would work well for photography too.

*edit for spelling

I love doing challenges, because I get loads of ideas for things that I would never shoot for any other reason. I have an absolute blast doing the scavenger hunt to collect the props, and figuring out the logistics to get the shot done.

Things like these have been an absolute blast to shoot.

Now I just need to get to the point where my technical skills catch up with my ideas.

Some weeks, I just don't have any ideas at all. Especially the week after I've done a challenge that took a lot of work, like the frying pan people, I seem to totally run out of ideas. I'm slowly learning that I don't have to enter if I don't have an idea, and that the ideas will come back if I give it a rest.

I also suffer from lack of ideas. When a challenge comes around I end up more times than not just shooting ordinary things and then trying to present them as artistically as possible but often it just comes out cold and static. I guess I do have some better ideas that come along but they are usually undoable without some expert like editing (as oppose to advance).

I get loads of ideas but rarely can actualise them. Sometimes it's because of my lack of technical skills, sometimes a matter of logistics.
I think I have yet to have an idea work out like I'd envisioned it :(

Me too! I think for every challenge I come up with ideas that either unactualizable or just don't come out well and I have no idea how or if they can be fixed... then I end up going with an idea I come up with while shooting the original idea and just hoping it doesn't bomb.

On the upside, I feel that DPChallenge is really making me learn and grow and if it wasn't for this place, I wouldn't have a chance of scrabbling a portfolio together. I mean, how many desert landscapes and pictures of my cats can a person stand?
