The whole neighborhood got involved in this one...

Allex (my sometimes model and always amazing assistant) did a great job shopping for props and building the models. She even dyed her bathrobe pink for the challenge. Our neighbors Mark and Paul loaned the suit, shirt, tie, and newspaper. The American Cancer Society unknowingly loaned the wig, and Rachel and Lauryn loaned their curlers.

This was taken in my kitchen, which is barely big enough for the task. Besides the set, we had two people, a tripod, three lights, and an assortment of diffusers and reflectors. Besides the model building, the hardest part was to light the space evenly, and I had to use my D70's kit lens at 18mm to get everything in.

Besides spending an hour cloning out fishing line, the only post processing was the usual cropping and curves, and some dodging and burning to brighten up the suit and the back wall, and darken the bathrobe and table.

Post challenge:

Thanks everybody for the great comments! I knew this was on the verge of DNMC before I took the shot, but when I realized this, there were several of people who had already loaned props, so I went on with the shoot. Once I did the shoot, it was so funny I had to enter it, regardless of how I thought it was going to score.

The family portrait is here:

Amazing effort. Technically good. But this seems like it's de-personifying people by making them frying pan heads, rather than personifying objects. You'd get 11/10 points from me in a surreal challenge. By the way, Mom is eating someone's eyeballs for breakfast, and I don't think that post-it notes and a ballpoint pen are a healthy way to start your busy day, no matter how you fry 'em. Incidentally, you are really bonkers and I appreciate that.

My goodness, how long did this setup take!? And to even have their portrait in the frame on the wall. I hope you at least got to eat the yummy breakfast before getting to work on this shot. Very creative!

very clever to put a copy of the family photo on the wall!. I like the homey feel of this photo. The only improvement would be in the contrast.

It's the Frying Pan People! And they appear to be cannibals if those are eggs on the plate ... or they eat their own eyeballs. Yuck. I like Dad's office supply face and the family picture in the background. You went to a lot of trouble for this one!

You deserve a medal for going to this much work. I mean, you even made a family portrait of this frying pan family. Other people took photos of a shrub in the back yard, and your made a whole tableau. Wow.

Very, very cute, and I'm sure time consuming, but you've just created people - isn't that the opposite of "non-human-looking"?

you went to a lot of trouble here...only a couple of minor issues: the chair could have been in anothe rposition as it looks a bit distracting...lighting is a lottle flat...perhaps a little levels adjustment would have worked. Apart from that, I love the picture on the wall and the whole concept 8
