I posted this in my blog tonight, and thought it would be nice to share it here. To hell with needing a "special someone" - who are your 2007 Valentines?

---

Tomorrow is the five year anniversary of my worst Valentine's Day ever. Hard to believe that half a decade has passed since then. In so many ways, it was the beginning of my trek to Colorado, being the first time I remember thinking that I needed to find a way out. Recent events echo those of so long ago in ways that I'd rather not remember, and they make me appreciate my distance and "new" state of residency that much more. I still feel new here, half a decade later. I still gaze over at the mountains during my morning commute and think, "Holy crap, I live here!"

Yesterday, I got a Valentine in the mail. It was a handmade pink construction paper heart signed by a first grader named Ellie. Apparently, the Girl Scout Council got some of their Brownie troops to make them for all of the volunteers. It is the sweetest thing ever, this little pink heart with the six year old's scrawl in red crayon on the back.

Now...

Thank you to the mountains, trails, flowers, city, and everything else in Colorado for making me feel as though I've finally found my true home.

Thank you to little Ellie for making feel like I matter and do make a difference.

Thank you to Sorcha for sleeping next to my cold feet every night and purring endlessly while curled up in my lap as I work.

Thank you to Kadean for laying claim to me as "My Becky!"

Thank you to the friends who have listened to me and understood the why and told me they love me and are proud of me without passing judgment. (Several DPC folks fall into this category.)

Thank you to my family for cheering me on, in art, in school, in work.

Everyone who fits onto this list somewhere, whether or not they are specifically named, whether or not they're actually human, they are all my valentines this year.

(Edited to add photos where I could.)

Mmmm, tough one.

I think I will choose "the one that got away" as my special valentine for today.
5 years since we broke up, but I will still marry her in heart beat. So here's to Ashleigh!

My Valantine is definately Peter, my soulmate, best friend and husband.
He came out of hospital today, with a huge bunch of Blue/Mauve Irises, and handed them to me, with this comment.....

These are for you my love, for Valantine, as these are 'recycleable', as they are the ones you gave me for my birthday, two days earlier.
I was so dam touched, as tears swelled in my eyes.

He has always gone out and brought me flowers for Valantines, but this year, he gave me the flowers that I had given to him. I was so very touched by that. He has such a huge heart, and I love him so very much.

This morning it was all about my two daughters, Daddy's little Valentines, Then getting them prepared for V-day parties at school etc. Tonight is all for my wife, I have steaks in the fridge + all the extras. Later I am going to surprise her with a nice dinner, light some candles put in an old L. Vandross CD and pray that the kids stay in bed.

I want to wish A Happy Valentines Day to all of you DPCer's. Especially the ones who might be spending this day alone or apart from the one\s you wish to be with.
Have a nice day!

My Valentine is my wife, who I proposed to 10 years ago today. Funny story about that, read on if you like sappy, funny stories...

I was literally "hot stuff" as I proposed. I took her for a romantic weekend and rented a hotel room with a private balcony overlooking the ocean. I had pre-arranged everything with the hotel for what I wanted to do. While she was getting ready to go out to dinner in the other room, I set up the patio with candles, roses, champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, etc. I timed it perfect for sunset. So when she's ready I take her out on the patio for some bubbly and stawberries, and we stand together watching the sun set over the Pacific ocean, holding her from behind. What I didn't know was that I was standing right next to one of the long candles, with the arm of my suit right over the flame. Needless to say I caught on fire and wrecked my suit, but I was able to put out the fire on my arm and proposed shortly after under the subtle odor of burnt wool and polyester. I had the videocamera on a tripod and got it all on tape, pretty funny to watch. So that's my happy-sappy Valentines Day story. :-) Oh yeah, she said "yes."

Happy Valentines Day to everybody.
