Thanks! I realize a lot of those pictures are not DPC-worthy but I've been having fun just shooting stuff. All the night shots are at 1250 or 1600 ISO. That's one area where the 30D has it hands down over the original Rebel.

And yes, I can sneak on at work.... :-) Still no internet at home, and probably not until the new year if I'm to believe half of what I'm not hearing. Ah well. I need to unpack and such anyway.

Melethia I loved this thread. My favorite is the Accordian Santa. With a little background work, I think you'd have a prize winner. Thank for sharing!

Don't forget the Yappie and OOBIE nominations.

my photo for one of the current challenges received a comment that it is too blurry in one spot...I thought that effect was called bokeh...guess I was wrong. 8(

Small aperture, no filter (not even sure you can put filters on my camera, and definitely not without a special tube I don't own). You can see the settings in the left side of the info box. I always post them for challenge entries and usually post them for portfolio shots, too.

For that shot, I used F/8.0 and 6s. I've known about the star effect for some time now, and I like it, but I wasn't going for the star effect intentionally in that case; rather, I was going for max depth of field.

By the way, I encourage everyone to go shoot the moon just for the experience. You might be surprised to learn that you need to expose it like a sunny beach, not like a night shot. It makes sense, because it's a brightly sun-lit object, not a dim scene at all. I think I shot the moon in this composite at something like F/5.6, 1/100s, ISO 50 (and then I darkened it considerably in processing):

Here's a shot by someone else at F/8, 1/350s, ISO 100:

Thus, without a dark filter to really darken the moon, you can't properly expose a night scene on the ground and the moon simultaneously.

If you want to know the definition of bokeh, search in the forums. The answer is that people argue about it. They also argue about whether bokeh is necessarily good or bad, and whether there's different quality bokeh.

The upshot is this, though: is what should be in focus actually in focus? You might answer that differently from your commenter; hence the comment.

levyj413Thanks for tutorial! Glad you were able to decipher my question - I meant small aperture, not small DOF (just the opposite, in fact)! I'm going to try and "shoot the moon" one of these nights.

Some commentators expect "everything" to be in focus or have a limited circle of confusion. I have learned to appreciate and embrace confusion.

I don't understand. What is that other website? Did someone grab your photo, or did you upload it there?

Stupid question...how do you search for previous Challenges? I'd like to see what was shot for Your Occupation I. I thought you looked under Challenge Archives but can't see a field in which to search for past challenges, and don't have time to scroll through 60 pages of challenge results!

Previous Occupation Thread. In Challenge History, you can sort in alphabetical order.

quiet has solved your problem, but in general you can go to Challenge History which doesn't load a bunch of thumbnails and from there a simple control-F will find a challenge.

It's the school at which I teach. I put them up on the internal network/learning platform same day I took them (yesterday) and lo and behold if Arne didn't have them on the school web page in the morning. I should probably ask him to put a little credit up there for me, but I'm not that proud. I was just impressed by the turnaround, so I thought I'd try out the link and show off the pics :)

will be super pleased if my score stays in the range it's at now.

Well my score's been dropping by tenths for a little while and it's starting to drop to where I am scared it might not stay in that range. Even so it should do a little better than some of my other stuff I think.

edit: And viewing it at home.. it is in fact darker than I wanted. Mmf. Oh well. Being darker does decrease the visibility of a slight trouble spot so I guess it all works out in the end.

So there was a bit of discouragement about both of those things but it is rapidly being replaced by overall encouragement and happiness. :-)

I reckon more people here have brighter monitors than dark ones actually. Quite often my pics have been slated for being too bright.

That's challenges->challenge history, in case you can't find it. And you've gotta tick the box to show all challenges, or it'll only show you some subset. Same as with challenge results.

It's a nice website, and the pictures look good. But where do you live, I don't even recognize that language.

Heh. No, it's not obviously recognisable. I live in Oslo, Norway.

Hmm whoops.

Well in any case I haven't gotten anything saying the picture overall is too dark so that's good. My score's still dropping though. Everyone think happy thoughts for my score... maybe it'll fly! :-D

Oh wait crap....
anyone got any pixie dust?

LOL.
