I haven't seen this movie and am not planning to either. Not really planning to submit either and that just isn't a big deal. However, i started to read up about The Matrix last night and concluded that it is a great challenge topic. It seems you can take this challenge in a number of creative, thought provoking, philosophical directions. Whether i will submit or not, i will definitely vote on it. Meeting the challenge never entered into my scores all that much and will just be voting pictures on their artistic and technical merits.

This really could have been cool of the editing rules were thrown out... This movie was so big in the film world because they took huge fantastic, new, ground breaking effects and effectively integrated them into a new original story...This is very very rare for Hollywood. That's why this movie was so popular. Oh, and let's not forget that the cinematography was amazing.

As photographers, this movie should be seen regardless of the subject matter because it is increadibly shot...A lot like, citizen cane for aspiring filmmakers. Citizen cane is boring as hell, but there's a lot to learn.

In the matrix, (the first one) you can pause it anywhere in the film, and it'll be a fantastic image. That̢۪s the mark of a well photographed movie. American Beauty another movie that shares this trait.

I think it's a clever idea. It's the most anticipated movie since Star Wars Episode 1.

I can't wait to see all the photos of batteries.

I think the topic is one that even if you didn't see or didn't like the movie you need have difficulty with. I think most of us would like to shoot professionally. Imagine this week your boss said "We need you to do a shoot for Matrix 2: Reloaded only Keanu's on vacation, so make it up."

Would you really do this shoot without watching the movie? If you wish to enter (and I discourage anyone from entering "just anything") then treat it as an assignment and try to learn how to do the job as well as how to take the picture.

Yeah, tell me about it. There are going to be hundreds of similar pics out there...don't get me wrong, I'm excited about this one and I think I've got a shot at doing a decent pic for it (maybe for the first time), but finding an idea that's not going to pop up at least ten times in other pics is going to be tough...

And I do feel for the people who've not seen the film yet (where've you been?! :) ) or don't enjoy it - it's perhaps a little biased towards film buffs (or geeks) - but hey, it's a bit of a one-off I think. That hour or so I'll spend on the marking next week will be just that extra bit more pleasurable...

My Glass submission was a matrix type, should have waited and used it for this.

the funny thing about mass-market science fiction/fantasy is that it lacks the depth, breadth, originality, innovation, or intelligence of the best science fiction. the best science fiction explores themes that great literature does, with the added bonus of innovative technical or imaginative elements.

the matrix and harry potter, just to name a couple examples, both fit into the former category: recycled, simplistic, rehashed cliche of MUCH better stuff that's come before.

that said, the matrix was a lot of fun as a movie because it was VISUALLY very well done, and it had a great soundtrack.

if you shoot something relating to computer technology, alienation, or leather fetish clothing, it should it :)

When taking your Photo...

"...only try to realize the truth."

"What truth?"

"There is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, only yourself."

I suppose I can join the nerds in the challenge. I think I will get a low score though. But will give it a try.

great Fiver, I was thinking of a shot with the spoon. Also had some other ideas. One thing about the challenge that I just thought of. There shouldn't be any of cliche flowers, hahaha.

Anna,

The bottom line of the Matrix is not Violence, even though it has a lot of action. It has a mind expanding stroyline. Awsome imagery, and great creative potential here for us Photographers to see our world differently. I think you'll be surprized at the lack of 'violent' photo's taken.

Even if it were about violence, I think it's a refreshing break from the extremely boring fluffy photos of late. Not everyone cares to do flower macros. It's a disappointing that everyone is so politically correct sensitive. What happened to risk taking? What happened to seeing things in a different light? Why is it so frowned upon to step outside of your litter box and into the world for a photo? Why is it mandatory that 100% of the site members agree with the challenge? When will the voices in my head stop yelling at me?

The funny thing is that there are tons of challenge topics that we do on this site that not everyone agrees with or is interested in, yet we do them anyway.

Why?

Because those people that aren't into them don't complain, lol. They just go 'oh whatever, maybe next week'.

100% agree with mag

I find it amazing the amount of interest this challenge has created.

Maybe I'm just easily amazed... =o)

I first saw the Matrix a few weeks after it came out. I didn't have the faintest idea what it was about - hadn't heard any reviews, hadn't even seen the trailer. Half way through the movie, when Neo "wakes up" in the pod, I was absolutely blown away. I thought to myself, "there are some ideas in my head that have never been there before." To this day, I have yet to grasp everything that the Matrix reveals. For anyone who is unable to see past the violence and leather pants, I seriously suggest you check out www.whatisthematrix.com and take a look at the essays there. Or for the more interested, there are some books out there that go into the philisophical aspects of the movie to a great extent.
