I need a photoblog that I can fully customize, is easy to use and update, and is free.

Any suggestions?

(I can pay to host it and whatnot, but i don't want to have to pay for software or a service)

p.s. - if you know of a really cheap one let me know too and I will consider it.

I use blogger. The templates are fully customizable, it is free, and really easy to update. There is also code to remove the "nav bar" at the top. Here is mine:

I used an online template generator here:

Hope this helps.

yeah, blogger.com, but i would pay for a one year subscription at flickr so you can link tons of photos and slideshows anywhere you want. $25 per year like dpc

Blogger is hideous, it can take days sometimes to upload an image.
I moved all my blog over to a WordPress blog on my own server.
The WordPress software is free... if you think you may become serious about your blog in the future, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches by just starting off with WordPress.

Here's an article which may help you: //www.johntp.com/2006/07/27/12-things-i-would-do-if-i-had-to-start-my-blog-again/

Edit, my blog is here: //blog.eyesopen.co.uk
Much better with more flexibility than when I was using Blogger

I use Pixlepost though the website to get it is not particularly friendly the download includes good instruction.

There's also Gallery.

For web log stuff in general, there's Movabletype (which is available for free, though the website likes to point you in the direction of commercial offerings) and Wordpress, which I've heard good things about. Both movabletype and wordpress and be customised with styles that will turn them into straight photo blogging pages.

I use Hello for Blogger as well, and like _eug, haven't had any trouble. There was a period in Feb/March where lots of people were having trouble, but I think since they upgraded their servers at Blogger it's been mostly resolved.

Have also heard wonderful things about Cafe Press. Good luck whatever you decide.

Shutterchance is fairly new, still in beta, but has quite a presence already. They are offering an upgrade to premium for all new sign-ups (currently) and you get an easy url to give to friends.

blogspot with picasa 2 is pretty cool View the images in picasa, and then just upload. I find that pretty easy to use.

During 2006 I'm using a combination of Hello (which integrates with Picasa very nicely) and Blogger.

However, I've just discovered Wordpress. I've found that the sheer number of Wordpress (free) templates out there make it much more easily customizable than Blogger. In addition, categorizing/tagging posts appears to be much easier within Wordpress than within Blogger. Wordpress also allows you to make "pages" that live outside of the post content and make certain information easier to find on the blog.

Wordpress.com offers this all free, much like Blogger. In the end, I wound up installing my own standalone Wordpress software within my personal web hosting account. It's super easy to install, super easy to run and use, and I likely will not be continuing with Blogger when the 2006 PAD project ends.

HTH.

The weird thing is, Blogger (at least the one I'm on) is more customisable than wordpress seems to be. The templates are completely editable and you can add client side javascript extensions (which aren't supported in wordpress.

Tagging/ categorising in blogger is as simple as typing the category under the post - not sure how its easier in wordpress though. I'm kinda new to all of this.

Though wordpress does seem to have a whole lot more free templates out there.

Hi Gordon! You can edit the code any Wordpress theme just like you can in Blogger. I *think* you can call javascript in them as well by editing the background code, but I've never had occasion to do that.

With regard to the tagging/categories, that may be a personal preference on my part. To me, once a category is added it's just so easy in Wordpress to check it (or multiples) off before posting.

Either solution is a good one.

Ah - it seems to be the difference between wordpress.com and installing wordpress on your own server. Wordpress.com doesn't seem to let you use clientside javascript, while blogger.com does.

It seemed to be a big issue in older versions of blogger that it didn't have labels/ categories. But it seems to all be there in the latest beta version.
