lol, they are missing all the fun. Everyone needs to go back through and look for the hidden pictures. Although I'm not sure if they need to unfocus their eyes, or put on some glasses. ;)

re: my earlier rant -

Just got a comment that explains a technical issue with my photo that makes me look at it in a new way...

no more ranting in scores threads for me, I think! :-)

Thanks for your lovely comment on my entry!

4.94 i had it pegged as a 4.6 image. maybe less because of subject matter. lol but, yay me. higher than predicted, i only entered in hopes of getting comments to explain to me how to do it better which i havent gotten but oh well. i'll ask the person who inspired it after the challenge is over.

It happens. I know in some of my previous entries I've had an issue, technical or compositional, that I may have missed until after I've had someone comment about it. Sometimes it's hard to be very critical of every aspect of our work, and it takes another set of eyes to point out something. I think I'm a pretty perceptive guy, but I've missed some pretty big things before that have no doubt affected my score negatively.

A rant every now and then is a good cleansing experience as long as it's not hurting anyone ;)

Is THAT what the voters are looking for - OOF?

I thought this challenge was for soft focus. You know, identifiable subject, in focus, but soft with maybe a glow to it?

Silly me! ;^)

Exactly... for the most part I think I got the soft focus down but I think the different views on soft focus in post processing versus the soft focus filter tricks... I did not realize that would be a concern for some. So I am very thankful for the comment I got.

I think some parts of my rant still hold, because I am quite sure that my outoftheboxedness is in fact hurting. But at least now I know that's not the only thing! And that makes me happy.

So..... I think the point is, YAY FOR COMMENTS!

While outoftheboxedness (new word for me lol) is definitely appreciated by some. You have to be careful with it. It can (and very often does) backfire on you, as you have no way to explain the rationale of your ootb thinking.

Feel free to enjoy the freedoms of being out of the box, but do so with caution and use protective gear ;-)

My thinking on that is, a crappy score might sting for a bit, but betraying what I really want to do as far as expressing myself artistically would hurt even more. I have three photos above my update button - two scoring not as well as I hoped, but all are making me very proud. I can look at those photos and say, I wanted to do x or y, and I achieved those things. I'm learning Neat Image. I'm learning how to dodge and burn effectively. I'm learning all sorts of other things. Of course I have not mastered these things, but with the photos for this week, I got the effects I wanted and I would be proud to have the photos hanging on a wall somewhere.

Usually I have an initial period where I am unhappy with my score, then I get over it and I'm happy again. And I've gotten so many comments - I woke up this morning to a new one on each entry. And that just makes me so delighted. When I first started submitting, I had no idea at first of what the flaws in my photos were, until the comments. Then I started learning more about certain techniques and styles and such, and I was able to predict what the flaws in my entries would be, and that would be confirmed by comments. I just didn't know how to work out those flaws before entering.

Now it seems more and more that I am getting comments that point out stuff I did not see at first, and I think that is happening as my photos get better and I am able to prevent the flaws before I enter. And that makes me really happy too.

Well thank you. :-) I try to look at things from positive angles and that is very necessary with a low average vote received, LOL!

Made it back to 6. Was a little higher for a moment.

I really appreciate all the fine comments, although the last one (from a bag head) was a little strange.

BTW, I know I've been ranting a bit (which I usually don't do), but really, I am very happy with my photo and I accept the fact that not everyone has the same tastes as I do. From the comments I know that some people out there like it as much as I do. Getting a lower score than what you expect can be pretty discouraging sometimes (especially the first several challenges), but if it weren't for DPC I'd never have taken this photo that I really, really like. Eventually you realize that there is much more to your photography than a score.

I was worried when my score was at 4.5, but it finally made it up to 5.5, and even got a favorite.
