This week for Candy, I narrowed down my choices to a pair of very different submissions. One was a more conventional interpretation of the theme - very literal - and the other was a more ironic and slightly metaphorical interpretation.
I personally liked the latter more, but hesitated to submit it as I haven't had good luck with that kind of thing in the past on this site, and have also seen others struggle with the same kinds of issues.
Well, now that the challenge is being voted on, I'll ask the good people of this forum -- What would you have rated this picture?
Mind Candy
I appreciate your responses and comments :).

In my case I find your interpretation of candy touchy. Anyone touched by mental illness would probably say ... how the heck is this mind candy. It's just that some of my family has had bouts of Bipolar Mood Disorder (manic depression). Not me though, I'm just crazy all around.
I like the overall color of the pic and the shallow depth of field. Super lighting. I would give it a 7 ... lacking a little wow.
Is this with your new 50mm macro lens?

I like it! Reminds me of my Four Challenge pic, that I got slammed on.
Four Tickets to Paradise
I've never tried Prozac, but I want to. Not for depression, but just to check it out. I've tried a few things, even Viagra! Woohooo! No I don't need it either, but good gawd thats' some fun stuff!

Hi Mag.
Geee, must be my 'mind'
...too much or too little mind candy!
Call me weird but I like it.
Love the focus, light and color of blue.
I'd of gone with a 7.

I'd give it a 6.
I like the colors, it's very moody.
LOVE the focus - it's perfect.
Dislike the reflection and the crop of the glass. Almost wish it was on a blue table, you could see the whole glass, etc. Not sure.
And if ya don't like it, you know where to find me ;)

I don't like the glass. If I resize my window to crop that side off I see a much better shot (to my eyes). The colour is great, as is the light effect on the table.
I would have voted it as on topic for the challenge but it could well have been risking a few 1s.
5 as it stands, 6 or 7 without the glass. |

Awesome shot, Mag. I really like the lighting and focus. I don't think it would have done good in the challenge though.

Personally, I like it. I like it lots. I think it would done very well in the challenge. I have taken similar pics of paxil and called it brain candy. Not on this site though.. was on photosig.

Thanks for all of your comments. I think sometimes we all forget that we can push the boundaries. Unfortunately we usually often tend to play it a little safe on this site, in service of the almighty Score. Heh, that's even what I did this week :-D
I think that pitsaman's rating might have been more in line with the majority of votes i would have received. Most of the people that commented in this thread tend to be the types that like this kind of thing :) ..
Re the pic itself -- the lighting couldnt have been done that way without the glass. The glass is what is refracting the light and making that cool pattern. I thought the glass added that 'oh so human' context to the pic as well.
Bamaster: prozac is too subtle in its effects to really be a recreational drug. You have to take it for a long time and after a while you may or may not gradually notice that things are a bit more 'upbeat' than they once were. . .
Thanks again....... |

This shot is a perfect example of a need for multiple ratings for each image. I would rate it highly in most categories :)

hmmm. nice shot. IF I was really particular, I might have used a different substance such as alcohol, as candy is a 'quick fix' and Prozac is certainly not. I'm in the mental health profession, so likely would have not been with the majority of thoughts on that.
I think I would have given it a six. I would have preferred that magenta de-saturated out to give it a more duotone look, then it would have rated seven with me.

rating for various aspects of the image such as:
1) technical
2) artistic merit
3) visual impact
4) etc etc etc
1-10 scale on each topic and then a score of the combined averages..

Well Mag, if you want something to give you an 'upbeat' effect... try that blue pill. I'm so friggin serious. I very rarely take one, but man oh man... talk about the ultimate ego booster.
