Wrong hotpasta, the anonymous commenters are not cowardly. They are the more honest among us. The people who complain about them are the real cowards because they can't accept honest criticism. If anything, the site should be changed so that all commenters are anonymous until voting is over.

I accept your opinion, but why hide behind a paper bag? Why not be honest in an open way? Maybe 'coward' was a strong word...didn't mean to offend anyone. I just think it's easy to do and say things behind a mask. It's kinda like road rage...you can rage all you want inside the metal cocoon, but when you come out of the car, you might not be so bold...

I'd rather hear it as it is, minus the paper bag...

This challenge looks so old school it's refreshing. No hyper-sharpened, super saturated, color-shifted multi phased odes to modern photoshop....just honest displays of composition.

Totally agree! I'm loving the pics in this challenge! You can tell who took some time thinking about the subject, camera settings, composition, effects, etc. No more saving in Photoshop. This is a fun challenge!

I learned more about my camera's settings in this challenge than I had in the last 6 months. I had never tried the manual white balance option, but that with a grey-card proved to be invaluable.

This is probably my highest score ever! When I saw the posting for this Challenge I grabbed my camera (and after a few delays) went out to find some good shots. I knew I had a good chance to do well with this because, while I'm weak in post-processing skills, not owning good software, I am fairly strong with composition. A challenge like this levels the playing field a bit for me.

I am just "beside" myself.... This score will probably end up in the control if "Troll-ism"...LOL...but this is my PB in this stage of the game with any picture so far!! I got out of it JUST what I saw and felt good about. Wouldn't care at this point if it ended up with a 3 or 4. I accomplished what I set out to do...and am VERY happy!! Thanks to those for the nice scores and comments so far!!

If it's minus the bag you're not going to hear it like it is, you'll get the sugar-coated version. It's not hiding behind a bag, it's just protecting one's self from the uncalled for remarks and attempts to influence votes that some people send via PM. Everyone knows who the commenter is immediately after voting, so you can't really say anyone is hiding; rather they are just delaying a potential hot-headed reaction, and cutting off potential cheaters. Whether you (and Cindi) like it or not commenting anonymously during voting is a feature that the site affords it's users, and as such the site has not made a negative judgement on the practice as you do. I don't think what you do is right. I don't think people should have to suffer abuse just because they choose to take advantage of something the site offers. If you really are concerned with people standing behind their words you would better use your time lobbying for a change that made it impossible for people to edit something they say in comments on entries until after voting is finished.

Still only 1 comment though. But, they'll all say the same thing anyway.
I WAS hoping for a top 150 (there ARE almost 400 entries). But now...well, let me not get my hopes up....it IS only the 1st day of voting.

good luck to you Mr. Ed...my score has already dropped to 6.000 since I posted the first score...*sigh*

Have been thinking about this thread for a few hours. My take on it is this is probably not the fairest contest. I understand the purpose of it is to level the playing field a bit and take away some of the Photoshop Guru's advantage, However Now it boils down to who has the camera with the most built in effects and the person who knows how to work them the best. This tilts the field a little but it still isn't level.

I was under the impression that this was more of a point and shoot no effects no frills. Or I prob would have changed some camera settings also. Oh well. At least no one will wonder if mine was tweaked outside of the camera. My photo is starting to do a bit better on the score and I got 1 comment so far.

My flower shot is doing better than I expected getting some positive feedback anyway.

I have fireworks to film tonight and a parade tomorrow so I will be a major shutterbug for the next 24 hours.

I agree, I liked this challenge...it makes you focus on fundamentals (composition, etc) and less on the other aspects. I think it would be fun to have an occasional challenge like this too. I admit, mine is probably boring, flat, compositionally challenged, but I think this kind of challenge helps you work on your pre-processing skills and thought patterns.

Are the votes high on this one? I'm not sure I've ever had a 6.1 at 50 votes with 0 comments...
07/03/2006 12:26:35 PM · #120
It does make you think more before hitting the shutter so when you do go back to keeping all the info the sensor recorded the images will require less procesing in Raw conversion and even less after. Just a bit of sharpening and contrast adjustment.

That's a shame, really. I think when the voting is over on this many people are going to be surprised at how certain looks can be obtained using standard photography equipment. Camera, lens, filters, etc...

There was a time when cool photos were produced, long before Photoshop was even thought of. ;^)

Just remember, with the exception of NO PP.....there is no 'Meets Challenge' to consider.

It IS a shame. It even says on the voting page to vote as if it was a legal photo and request verification. Then let the chips fall where they may. I voted EVERY photo (well, not all yet) as if they were legal.

I dunno, but with the number of entries in Flowers and Straight, I am not surprised by the zero comments.

And it's been climbing all morning, so hopefully that trend will stick. I'm thinking this is not bad at all for a no frills P&S!

That reminds me of the scene from Good Morning Vietnam where the one very "unfunny" guy says to Robin Williams: "I know deep in my heart that I am funny".

Only I bet your shot actually *is* interesting. Still, you made me laugh. :-)
