I think I'm going to dangerously hover around 5.3ish.

If a bad photo wouldn't look significantly better with PP, that definitely played a role in my scoring.

Exactly! I'm voting more on the potential of the shot, not as a finished product, taking into account the things that ARE within the photographer's control, such as composition, horizons, lighting, extraneous bits (twigs, etc.). I know some cameras can do amazing processing, and some people might be using those and just not know how to get the best from their settings, but I'm mostly giving the benefit of the doubt.
But at least this challenge should help get folks thinking more about what goes into a good shot, beyond PP :) There ARE some shots with great potential! :D

Wasn't the challenge to get the best possible picture out of the camera? Aren't we voting on what's presented and not what could be were we allowed to use post processing?

;o)

I think Colette's got it right. But that's only my opinion and everybody knows that they can vote however they like, and no one will be judged as wrong.

An image that can not be improved by editing is a very rare thing. However, one of the objectives that could be accomplished by this type of a challenge is to get people thinking about how good pictures can be without manipulation. If someone is looking at the entries and thinking about how they might have looked with a little tweaking, they may be missing out on one of the lessons available here.

Yup, probably didn't explain myself well :) It's just that that "best possible" varies so much with equipment that I'm trying to take into account everything (which is impossible to accurately do without knowing what equipment they used). For ME, and this is my opinion only, I'd probably score better a shot that was well thought out but a little flat in contrast or a little unsharp than one that looked nicely processed but had a badly tilted horizon or clutter that could be avoided by a step to the left. See what I mean? :)
But everyone's entitled to vote on their own criteria, and I'm not complaining, just voicing an observation :)

It only says "give us your best straight from the camera shot". It doesn't give voting instructions and doesn't imply that shots should be rated as totally finished products. Potential wasn't the only criteria - it was mentioned as part of my comment on obvious cast offs. Throw aways vs. shots that are good but need some TLC vs. shots that look quite excellent all on their own.

How strange. I think my Straight from the Camera entry may end up on my profile page as one of my 6 highest scores ever. From a brief glance at the profiles of some of the higher scores listed here, I am not alone. A few of us are heading for a new personal best.

Who'da thunk it?

For me it's nothing strange at all... This challenge made us pay more attention than usual at the moment of taking the shot itself, knowing that we couldn't even crop the picture.
I think it's a great exercise and that this type of challenge should come around more often.

Mine is currently running as my second highest score, which means it will be the third new photo from Challenges on my portfolio page in two months (but, of course, I still produce stinkers with sub-5 scores... ;>þ)

I had to go back to my days of shooting film and envision what I'm going to be able to produce without the luxury of any real post-processing. I think a lot of the voting has not been based on what the photographer was attempting to accomplish strictly with his or her camera but what would the image have looked like with added contrast, color correction or any one of the many editing tools we have at hand. I started out in the low 7's and in the past few days I’ve been disappointed by the following:

I've had a lot of people looking but not a lot voting. This challenge has proven to be one of the more unique to say the least. I'm happy with the comments I've received and very thankful for each but I'd really like to see a lot higher score than I have now.

A weird one..
20 comments and not one is negative..this would have really thrown me off if I had turned off the scores and only looked at my comments.

You bet it's weird!!! I bet it'll be one of those shots everyone will say it's really underrated.

The score doesn't bother me in the least.

I just can't PP THAT well. I can do some basic stuff and they do look better afterwards, but that's where it ends. I just can't grasp it. I'll enter some more challenges, but limit myself to Basic Editing. Maybe some day........

BTW....we're movin on up. C'moooooooon 6.

You guys have to remember that no matter how hard a person tries to vote on a level playing field, they will always make comparisons. That's what voting is all about here, not nessasarily following the unwritten 'rules' of expectation. So, it is really pointless to go on considering it more than you guys have. Also, I wouldn't be too happy about getting high scores on this challenge. It just means that everyone around you essentially sucked in comparison. ; )

This is doing better than I would have expected but I have had less comments than my entry in stationery, which is in the 4.8's!

I have decided that it is best to adopt a Zen-like persona when looking at votes :-)

I have been staying pretty steady or slightly climbing through the voting process and now all of a sudden I am falling like a rock. I don't know what just happened.
