Apparently the voters missed the meaning of the challenge...What does Desolation mean to "you"...you, meaning the Photographer... a very creative open ended challenge...lol..just a thought...

Even if my scores crash and burn between now and closing, tonights been an awsome night for me. I spent hours above 6 and I got the best compliment in the comments I could have wished for. Tonight I love DPC Challenges. :) Think I will go vote now :o))))

Score is about 5.4... but I've just received the best comment ever! I'm now happy with my submission even if it never leaves the slumps of 5.x

DPC rocks!

i guess some things are easier to describe than show. thanks for the constructive critism. It's making me a better Photographer day by day.

dang, it was at 5 a few minutes ago. Anyway, I love my picture and I'm happy it will be in my portfolio soon. It would have been nice for it to appear on my profile page, but c'est la vie.

I hope I get a sexy curve for this picture. I'm sure I'll get some low votes. Hoping for some high ones, too.

Okay..I think I knew this was going to happen. I even mentioned it in the post before the voting began.

with 1 comment thats a DNMC...

So I think i want to put this out there..as I did in the other post, just to remind everyone what desolation means...straight from Dictionary.com

Desolation

n 1: the state of being decayed or destroyed [syn: devastation] 2: a bleak and desolate atmosphere [syn: bleakness] 3: sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned [syn: forlornness, loneliness] 4: an event that results in total destruction [syn: devastation]

I think my photo captured definition 1 and 4. I don't expect it to be a winner, but I think it's way better than a 3.7XX

I guess it's also fair that I didn't do much editing because I didn't get home to edit until 11pm last night.

It is open-ended, yes. But say that your idea of desolation is kittens and rainbows and lollipops - you're not going to score well unless you somehow make the viewer understand the how and why. Personal meaning isn't going to be enough. It has to translate to your audience.

Oh, and I'm running 5.3ish so far.

Just depicting your interpretation of the topic isn't usually enough to score well here. You have to have an image which stands apart from the others from a technical standpoint, and it has to have something which makes the viewer want to stay and look longer. If it falls short in either of these two points you can expect to be mid range at best.

I fully agree and I would not be complaining if my score was that low based on technical merit (okay I probably would be complaining, but not with much behind it.). But Does not Meet challenge scores bother me, because it clearly conveys two of the 4 definitions I have (straight out of the dictionary).

And my photo..even if edited to be a 10 photo would still be ugly and make you not want to look at it. Even I have a hard time staring at it (probably why so little editing was done..haha)

Then you just answered your own question - 'its difficult to looks at' almost shouts low score ;-)

this was one of my better photos and the score has not reflected that at all.
i'm in a serious slump with the voters.

my membership is due to renew in 10 days and i'm not sure if i want to renew.

I guess I got desolation and desolate confused. One of the definitions of desolate was "uninhabited" and thats what I went for. I think I have a great photo but it evidantly DNMC. I'm just barely holding a 5.
