Sweet, a second fav and also a bunch of really great compliments. Thanks! It makes it easier to ignore the score and those DNMC votes which are worthless anyway. People come here to improve their photography and not learn what 200 or so people think the meaning of "desolation" is. I hope handing out those 1s, 2s and 3s serve some purpose like making you sleep better at night.

I don't think the "dnmc" comments are worthless. Part of the problem of this challenge is the viewer's interpretation of "desolation" - again it goes back to "pleasing the client". In my little world, "desolation" carries a negative or at best neutral connotation. Several shots I've viewed are very well done (and will get decent scores from me) but are more peaceful and serene than desolate - to me, anyway. Does that make sense? Hence, if I see two shots that are equally good technically and compositionally, yet one is more "desolate" to me than the other, the one that meets the challenge best will receive the better score.

All that being said, to get back to scores, mine has steadily dropped since opening. Not a lot, but no "up" swings at all on this one.

This is where I disagree ten fold. Pleasing the DPC client is a worthless exercise, IMO. The only point is pursuing a ribbon and that's fine. I just don't think you learn anything in the process. I know I haven't as my scores have increased.

I work with real clients as a graphic/web designer and I know exactly what they want. They either tell me exactly or they allow me the creative freedom to produce what they need and not want to tackle their problem. Even if the client hasn't a clue what they want or need I can work with them to at least agree on a specific direction to persue. None of that happens at DPC and therefore you learn ZERO when it comes to pleasing a client. Now one can say you are learning about mass appeal however even that isn't true at least in this instance. The fact that a couple of hundred DPCers disagree with me about what desolation means to "ME" (i.e. the challenge theme) doesn't say anything about the mass appeal of my image. The masses aren't going to split hairs about what I thought desolation was. They will either like it or not based on the look and feel of the photograph itself, period. Which is why DNMC votes are completely worthless, IMO. The only purpose they serve is self gratification. And let me clarify when I say DNMC votes I mean those 1s, 2s and 3s that are handed out to otherwise good to fantastic images.

Oh and Deb, don't take that as an attack on you. I'm just giving you the reason why I think they are worthless.

I don't hand out 1s, 2s, or 3s for DNMC but I think I know what you're saying. The difference when I score is more like "it's a great shot, well done, but has NOTHING to do with the challenge" gets a -1 or -2 (depending on how far off from the challenge it was) from what I'd have given it otherwise.

I've never given a 1 at all. I've given some 2s (usually to those all black or all white "pictures") and very few 3s. And I give more 10s than I do 3s.

But I do still think it is important to try to meet the challenge and I do tend to vote according to that theory. :-)

Oh I agree. There's a big difference between taking some points off and killing an image with an incredibly low vote because you thought it didn't meet the challenge even when in cases like this where it specifically states what desolation means to the photographer. People act like they are obligated to handing out those 1s, 2s and 3s to prevent a photo from winning that otherwise didn't meet the challenge and to me that's just an abuse of power and serves no purpose beyond that end. Anyway, I've hijacked this thread too much already. Back to your regularily scheduled Desolation Scores. :)

Once upon a time it was above a 6.1, but alas, now it's not. Still a good score, great comments, and a fav, which beats the heck out of a score. :-)

Ok...so I have seen people complaining about not having comments to justify a low score...and I have seen people who don't want to see the DNMC comments....so which way do you want it? If meeting the challenge has no bearing on scores, then why doesn't everyone just put in their best pic of the week? To me meeting the challenge is a huge part of what is going on here. IMHO every photographer here is capable of making a great image...but to make a great image and have it fit the weekly challenge is what makes some of those pics special.

I agree with carisakD70. This isn't a pretty picture contest where one should expect to receive high or even average scores if the submission missed the point of the challenge. That would be pointless.

And I'll confess that I regularly hand out 2s - 4s if the submission doesn't meet the spirit/intent of the challenge. If 1-4 are disagreeable scores,we should change the available votes to 5-10. The bigger issue is score compression where everyone gets between 4 and 6 points (encompassing bad to just below perfect) - that's what we should be concerned about.

here's a quick question:

why does every shot require a 'level' horizon? i routinely get comments that the horizon isn't level... well, i agree that some shots are terrible with a tilted horizon, but don't you think some shots (especially when it's a wider angle, different perspective, ect) can add to the dynamics of a shot?

no?

ok, carry on...

Wow, nothing has moved in days on this. I went to bed last night and woke up this morning with 10 more votes and 4 comments. I'm impressed. My score still sucks, but I'm OK with that.

There is an ongoing discussion about this in a separate thread that has been running for the last few days. Search on tilted horizon.

The problem with that approach is that some people are turning this into an English grammar/diction competition, rather than a photography competition. You can't simply vote a photo down because someone has misinterpreted the challenge. First rate the quality of the photo, then award points for meeting the challenge or not.
There's a difference between blatantly disregarding the challenge, and interpreting it differently. Not everyone on here speaks English as their first language. Interpretations are bound to differ.

There is already a thread running about the confusion regarding the general understanding of the term 'bokeh' in that challenge.

Look at how many different definitions there are of the word desolate (taken from Dictionary.com):

des·o·late
adj.
1.a. Devoid of inhabitants; deserted: “streets which were usually so thronged now grown desolate” (Daniel Defoe).
1.b. Barren; lifeless: the rocky, desolate surface of the moon.
2. Rendered unfit for habitation or use: the desolate cities of war-torn Europe.
3. Dreary; dismal.
4. Bereft of friends or hope; sad and forlorn. See Synonyms at sad.

It's meanings range from "deserted" to "sad". That leaves plenty of scope in there for interpretation.

I don't think it's fair to mark a photo down to a score of 1-4 simply because their interpretation of the challenge didn't match your own interpretation.

First judge the photo - that's what we're here for.
