@Tygerr.

I see what you're saying and I agree completely about not everyone speaking the same English .. but that's why we have a week to discuss it.

Part of the problem is that its difficult even in a dictionary to express a word without using other words (so we end up with multiple interpretations). For example the different meanings of desolation carry a connotation of misery/sadness/decay. When I see a picture of *edited to be less specific during voting * - my mind doesn't come up with the word desolate - more like peaceful or solitary. And that's what the challenge is about isn't it ? - how well a photo invokes the quality of desolation in the viewer's mind

THe way you're describing this - someone who managed to get the right idea but couldn't execute it well would have a lower score than someone who took a an entirely different subject very well.

I suppose it all comes down to what we think we are getting out of this. If we want to improve our photographic talent then by all means judjing the technical merit should garner more weight. But if we want artistic improvement the content is just as important as the process.

Hopefully we have enough people on both sides of the debate to cancel each other out :D

Edit : Removed a reference to a category of picture/possible example during voting

desolation, bokeh, God...it's all in the detail and interpretation.

Yes, that's exactly how I'd vote it. I'm here to improve my photography, not my interpretation of the connotations of various English words.
I would never give someone 2-4 for a decent shot, simply because they didn't meet my interpretation of a challenge (especially one as open to interpretation as this).

Of course, I wouldn't choose them as a winnner, or award them a 9/10 if they completely failed to meet the challenge, but a decent photograph still deserves a decent rating.

That's just my opinion though. You're free to differ, and as you said, hopefully democracy eventually averages everything out.

I have tried to vote and comment fairly. Some awesome images...with a lot of beauty but desolation mixed in with them.

Some great ideas....but the ones that got to me the most were the ones that really tried. They might not have had the professional equipment to pull of their ideas but they tried...and to me that makes them the winners.

Good work everyone.

Bleh. Not what I'd hoped, but about what I'd expected. THIS week the weather cooperates for what I wanted to do! Never fails, eh?

From the comments, people either like but can't seem to figure out why...or they hate it.

Pretty consistent blah all week long here.

I'm doing surprisingly well. Very mixed reaction from the commentators, though. Some don't like it at all, some neither like nor dislike it, and others seem to like it very much. I've taken on board those comments that have pointed out the flaws, and will work that advice into future photos.

As I'm flying out in a few hours, I'll miss the final results till I return in just over a week, but I'd like to take this opportunity before I go to give my most heartfelt thanks to those who voted and commented.

At this point, I'm riding on:

I'll trade my blah for your blah ;)

It's weird though... it seems like my Desolate and Bokeh scores are wired together. If one goes up, the other goes down by a nearly identical ratio. That's NOT the way I want it to work! :)

well, it seems voting has ground to a halt. nothing new all day. but, i'm happy with my image - much the closest i have come to creating the way i did with paint or charcoal before. thank you dpc for ginving me the push i needed to be creative again, the constraints to work within to bring out what's been buried for a long time.

aw, shucks, i'm going all weepy now...

I am SO psyched! There was a terrific voting trend today for my desolation which stopped it from looking so desolate in score. Thank you day time voters!

I'm doing very well. I am nearly neck and neck with you liltritter. It's been a crazy week of voting. The comments are just as crazy. I can see all points though. It's funny how a comment can make you see through someone elses eyes and something you never noticed. Then all of a sudden you see it to. lol. I'm just happy to be in the 6's for my second entry!
