| My birthday is in a few days (the 11th), and so I'll be getting money from some people, plus I have some saved up. I think I'll be getting a telephoto lens for it, and for myself with the money, I want to get a macro lens, so I have the full spectrum (sort of). What's the best macro lens you can get for your money? |

| $450 is a little steep for me, unless I save for a couple months after my birthday. Any other choices? |

Maybe a set of extension tubes for your 50mm?

What about just reversing your 50mm onto your 18-55mm lens? That'll be the cheapest way.

Already did that, it's a little TOO macro for me, if you know what I mean...it's hard to focus and hold still, and it's just...not working well. |

Yup, I know what you mean. I tried it on my friend's 300D. Are you looking for a true 1:1 macro lens though?

What's the difference between a 1.1 macro lens and otherwise? |

Sammi--
I'd really consider these if you dont have alot of money to spend -
Kenko Tubes

The magnification of the lens. 1:1 was from film cameras, when you take a picture with a 1:1 lens and get the negative, the object that you photographed would be identical in size on the negative as it is in real life (life-size image). If that makes sense. When you reverse the lenses, you can get a magnification of more than 1:1 (2:1, 5:1). A telephoto lens will have the opposite magnification (a Canon 70-200mm lens has a magnification of 1:5.8). I don't know if all that makes any sense though.

Kenko Tubes |
Hi Sammi, I agree with the rock, the Kenko extension tubes are great. They are certainly affordable and do a pretty darn good job. Happy Birthday.

| I think that with 50mm of extention tubes on your 50mm 1.8 you'll have about 1:1 magnification. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong here. |

I needed (wanted) one right away and had to deal with price and in stock. I am quite happy with what I got: Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro, 239$ to 269$.

i must agree... i love my tamron 90mm. i thought about the nikkor 60mm, but decided that just wouldn't be enough reach for the type of macro i wanted to do...
here are some more examples of what it can do on a nikon body :

I'll have to second the idea of the extension tubes. I use them and I sold my sigma 105mm macro lens. I have little or no interest in extreme macro (1:1 or better). I can get very close to 1:1 if i need to with the extension tube set.

If you really want to explore macro and already have a 50mm 1.8 or faster lens, try a macro bellows.
Oh my.
Putting any lens on a bellows, and though cumbersome, you will be in mACRO LAND. The bellows does the same basic thing as the extension tubes, only they allow for more precise focussing, etc... without moving the camera. You move the bellows instead.

| I bough a Digital Rebel XT a few months back, and bought a sigma 70-300 telephoto 1:2 magnification and a macro switch. I love it, it is cheap, and I have gotten some really great shots with it. //www.adorama.com/SG70300DAEOS.html?searchinfo=sigma%2070-300&item_no=15 |

2nd the Sigma 70-300, not as sharp as some but it is the most versitile lens I own. Though I own better macro and tele lenses (and more expensive), this is still my favorite. Good luck!
