Looking through some wonderful entries in Architecture that got dismal to average scores, I was inspired to start a second round of Team Suck Sucker awards. There are two types of Suckers awarded by Team Suck, as follows:
First, the Oobie Sucker. Standing for "Out Of the Box," this award is granted to the most creative entry in a challenge. Remember, this is not for the technically best photo, which is what the normal voting seems to cover. This is for artistic inspiration and/or creative interpretation of the challenge. But please, nominate an entry that inspires you, NOT the entry you least understand.
Second, the Yappie Sucker. This award is granted to the best commentor in a challenge. If someone gave you a great comment, or if you happen to read one after the challenge is over, please nominate the commentor.
We are now accepting nominations for either award for any of the following challenges:
Architecture III
Success
Failure
Heat
Self Portrait IV
Lenscap
Still Life II
This is not one award per challenge (unless we're inundated with nominees). The awards will be given to the best from all these challenges.
The nomination period ends on midnight EDT of Wednesday, June 7th.
And this is what a sucker looks like:
oops! no no no... THIS is what a sucker looks like:
As always, please provide the image or the comment respectively, and the reasoning behind your nomination. Discussion of nominees is also encouraged and will be used to help the voting.
Voting will be done privately by Team Suck and results will be announced this coming weekend.

I'm going to nominate pointandshoot's brilliant Architecture entry for an Oobie:
Notice how the interiors of computers are made to look like buildings. We have an illusion that creates the traditional notion of architecture, a pun on the computer term, but ALSO a look at how a computer is physically architected (I apologize for that verb) and how one can find the beauty in that.
I am also going to nominate for an Oobie this way underrated shot by vjoz, also for Architecture:
The purpose of architecture is not merely to create an object, but to create an object that interacts with its environment (and to be its own environment). In this shot, architecture is shown to be "touching" its environment via a reflection. Not just that, but the way the reflection blurs the architecture emphasizes its basic shapes and thereby highlights its architectural design.
Both of my nominees are excellent examples of how you can be "out of the box" and yet completely meet the challenge, even meet it on several levels.

For the "Yappie Sucker" award, I nominate posthumous for this comment:
"This is a fascinating concept. The photographer does not look at us and therefore we cannot see her, even though she is using a mirror. You are subverting the purpose of a mirror AND subverting the purpose of a photograph."

I'll nominate
by w24x192 for an Oobie.
This photo is a very clever tribute to Norman Rockwell's self portrait
he captures the easygoing spirit of the original so well, along with clever references to photography and cartooning and specific dpc photos. bravo!

I didn't get much in the way of Yappie-worthy comments, so I did a little research and I decided to nominate pineapple. I've included some of his comments from the Architecture challenge below. This guy is a huge asset to DPC. He writes lots of comments and they are incisive and smart.
"Good work on the Bridge. You managed (for me) to make Brooklyn Bridge look very un-Brooklyn Bridge-like. As if it had been on diet. ;-) Considering the recent dull, uncooperative weather, this is a good shot."
"With a little colour and threat in the sky, it would be that much nicer."
"Lovely point of view and interpretation. The human and architecture, which not too many of the entries to this challenge juxtapose. Nice work!"
"Pretty place. I imagine it is a place of myriad moods in light and weather."
"Not a bad title with several possible meanings. Modern architecture is very often sterilized and somewhat dead, IMO. This is a clever photo."
"Nice title. Sounds like Plath, but probably isn't. Paint texture is outstanding. For photographic purposes, paint gets better with age and weather. Nice that you submitted something out of the ordinary."
"Isolation. Nice. Better if the figures were more into the empty zone."

Due to the small number of nominees, I'll take nominees from the Beatles and Single Light Source challenges, too. You have until midnight tonight, EDT.

I would like to nominate Myself for a yappie, Yes Myself, and I second myself as well... This sucks eh!.....Here is why ( some comments by Kronus)
"I could use a gardial angel"
"where did you get th artifical sun, I need on DNMC"
"natural lite or a really really really big flashlight"
"Wow thats awesome for a single light source -10"
"Can I borrow your flashlight, mine went supernova"
" came back to bump this up but I already gave you a 10"
"Wow that flashlight is huge"
I know the over use of the word (flashlight) in a single thread is grounds for a DQ all in it own, so I appeal to a team spirit that would show the world that we do in fact suck.... What thats another speach damn!

I'm submitting for the Yappie award. I don't know why, but these comments made me laugh.
Zigomar - "You da man, man!" - I wonder if he knew I really was the man (self portrait)
Leok - "He looks forlorn - he crawled off to sleep in the bath...(Norwegian Wood) nicely done!" - Anyone wanna explain Norwegian wood?
and my favorite
Sparky9001 - "Semi-Naked man! Ahhhhhhh!" - haha...life would be boring without humor. |

Nominees for Oobie:
Do these guys know each other? ;-) Thoroughly guffaw-worthy character sketches, this behavior must be rewarded!
Hey shorty! Wow, where did you get this idea? Made me look twice.. er, ok, 7-8 times.
Seconding this one - was best of show, imo.
Good golly, this one even makes Scalvert's setups look slouchy.
I am a such a sucker for well-done dilapidation. Keep your eye on this photographer, she has splendid OOBs. ;-)
For making me look for what isn't there.
Witty and warm. Nuts to you knee-jerk domestic animal haters :P

As I sit here and review all of the submissions in this challenge, including mine, I stand by my score, this is a 10... I would have been proud to have had this photo beat out mine! If I wanted to get very picky... a photo like this does not need a border and the b/g is a tad busy.. but that's it... I love the photos of our elders as much, if not more, than that of our children.
This is typical of MacClavey's very inspiring and thoughtful comments, and just look at her given:received ratio!

Almost a beautifully exposed image - well, it may well actually be, but you've allowed so much negative space that the full area of interest of the image is reduced to a very small dimension. There is certainly something to be said for some breathing-space in the framing of any object, but that raft of black seems unneccesarily much to me - and it has a down-side: with more flower, we'd see more of what gives the impression of being a finely detailed controlled exposure, worthy of a longer look. Also, here, the real eye-catcher of the frame is that brighter, higher contrast part of the bloom, and that is, perhaps, just a touch too centre of frame? Or perhaps even just a more diagonal composition would have sat more happily - I'm just finding that composition a bit discomforting.
This is constructive criticism at its best (and typical of e301). A generous gift of intelligent discussion and rationales - not easy to pull off with one-sided dpc commentary. This kind of feedback is the antithesis of the two or three word critiques that typically dominate. No sane person would ever visit backlash on one who spent so much time palpating a photograph in order to understand the nature of its heartbeat.

OK...so I am having about he worst week EVER and I get this beautiful amazing life affirming comment from Yanko...Nominate BIG TIME for a Yappie!! If nothing else it is nice to give a public shout out :))
Thank You Thank You Thank You Yanko !
"I scored this image an 8 because it struck me as a great self portrait. I don't know you well but for this moment in time the camera caught you I felt I did and that's what makes a good self portrait, IMO.
And for that effort what does DPC do in typical fashion? It places it 183rd. Good grief. Most of the images that ranked ahead of this could only dream of the substance this had but alas we as a community just want our daily fix of exploding landscape backdrops, cool looking props and super tack sharp eyeballs that were dodged and burned to mathematical perfection. It would be great if ONE TIME a challenge rewarded authenticity over the constant illusions that ribbon each week."
