This is the first time I've ever hand out 46 tens. We have a lot of talent in the bridge challenge. One thing I also noticed it that there seems to be some people that go out and shoot the same bridge together, while there are some people that live in the same cities and take shots of the same bridge. |

10 doesn not equal 'perfect' for everyone. The DPC voting scale says 1 = very bad and 10 = very good :)

I've never given a 10 yet, thinking that it was for perfection. I'm glad someone's cleared that mistake up for me.
Anthony.

Everyone seems to have their own ideas about how to score, which is fine... Diversity is good :)

In that case not many people think that my photo was "very good"...
Except, funnily enough, Mr Setzler...
Average 5.6 at the moment and plummeting.. |

The only time I had free to shoot my bridge, the fog was up and I couldn't even see it! So no one will give me a 1 this challenge!! LOL

I find it interesting that when someone says they gave 46 10's, the consensus is that people can vote how they wish. If someone gives 46 1's, people are all over them.

Well...46 VERY GOOD photographs on this site does not surprise me in a challenge (and I have not voted yet). And, I think there is no way to ever see 46 VERY BAD photographs here. I have a hard time voting anything under a 5. Why, because, almost everyone here shoots at least a GOOD photo. But, there can be exceptions at times. (C:

It's easy to find my bridge Sonja, it's got the Union Jack flying over it :) (not really)

Can't personally see how you could give 46 tens either, but it doesn't matter: so long as people vote consistently, it should have no appreciable effect.

Maybe because your average vote is 4.2, so you don't tend to use the full 1-10 range ? Nothing wrong with that, but if you consistently vote low (about 1.3 below a true 'average') you'll hardly ever give out 10's... |

YAY US!!
I must say that the Bridges challenge is one of the best batches we've had in a long time. My average score is HUGE compared to what it normally has been (I guess I'm pretty harsh and not afraid of the 1-4 range).
I gave bonus points to what I consider "different" images -- odd angles, good perspectives (although that is kind of easy to do in a Bridge challenge, but oh well), and images that just stick out in my mind in general. There are always a couple in each challenge that I just love, but this bunch has several for me and that's exciting.
Please please please please keep up the good work and the tons of different points of view. If I ever again have to vote on 200-some pictures of the same egg over and over I think I may just ... well, crack.
:)

ps -- since we're sharing:
I had 9 10s and 23 9s. That's way way way over my average. It was actually FUN to see over 200 photos! |

usually I give alot of fives out. This is my "anyone could have taken the picture" score. I score lower than 5 if I start seeing major mistakes such as out of focus, blurred, overexsposed, underexsposed, messed up color saturation. Than I have a certain pet peeve about those images that seem to miss the point like; "Yeah there is a bridge in there but you've totally drawn way too much attention from the subject of the competition by desaturating all color except for the big whatever that is." Furthermore I think giving out too many fives is something too many people do here by lack of not thinking through the composition, or taking enough time to see the photograph. |

I am a relative newcomer to DPC, and consider myself to be not quite an amateur photographer. My aspirations are great, however, and I have used the site as a means to educate myself about the subtle nuances of the "perfect" photo. I have never voted on a challenge, choosing to first become familiar with voting patterns of the regular users, and how the photos are judged. Many of the shots that I think are great have not received votes that agree with me, but I have chalked that up to my inexperience in photography. Reading the critiques has enlightened me as to what makes a fabulous photograph: lighting, composition, angles, etc. In my own attempts at using a camera, I have produced some phenomenal pictures, but this has been the result of luck or accident, rather than a planned exposure. My goal is to learn enough to take these types of photos at will. Reading the critiques gives me an insight into how different people view the moments captured by the camera; sure, no two people will have exactly the same perspective, but that in itself is an education. I hope to soon become active in joining the challenges, which will be the next phase of my education. Bottom line is: I love to take pictures, and I want to take pictures that enable the viewer to see what I see. |
