It was announced last night at the Virginia Press Association's annual awards that yours truly won a first place award in the Pictorial Photo category and a third place in the Portrait category.
This is especially sweet to me, because the competition is open to all newspaper staff members--freelancers have to meet additional criteria before being allowed to submit:
1) You have to have submitted work to at least half the issues published in the past year. I had 5-20 images published in all but 4 issues between April and Dec of last year.
2) You have to be recognized in the community as being associated with the paper. At this point, that's a given.
3) Your credit line in the paper needs to indicate a relationship with the publication. Well, even though it doesn't mean any more money (yet), they have started running my credit line as Skip Rowland, Staff Photographer.
I submitted 7 individual photos and 2 photo essays. They were judged by the press association of another state (I believe either Oregon or Washington). The competition is organized by publication frequency and circulation. On one hand, there were only 26 other papers in our circulation category (weekly papers with circulation under 7000), but, on the other hand, some of these are really good papers.
One thing that made it really tough was that you couldn't submit prints--the entries had to be submitted as clipped from the paper!
