I am really not digging this movement. The feeling used to always be more about the photograph, many people would sight JJ as an example as someone who ribboned many times with a P & S. I found it a great empowering learning envirornment.
Now it seems, since I can not afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a DSLR, I and other p&S users, are being continually slagged off as ot getting it, or being stupid enough to settle for less.
I have a couple of mentors here, who are dslr users, but dont write me off for not having one myself. Thats what this site used to be about.

I think the original poster had tongue firmly in cheek when he started this - to an extent anyway. You do NOT need to worry a bit - you do fine work. Your pictures have "heart" - something that is often lacking in the dSLR work from folks who are trying to get the "technicals" right (and I include myself in as one of those trying too hard). It's a whole lot easier to try to improve the technical aspect with a "good" camera than it is the learn to capture "heart" in a picture. So in the end, you, my dear, already have an advantage. Point and shoot to your heart's content, I say!

See now Mel, you are one of the peeps that makes this site worth hanging out at. Thanks for your kind words :)
I am going to go wander around and see if I cant find a literary challenge that I can point my camera at, and shoot :))

I think it's a good idea.

Concurrent Free Studies in open... dSLR's only and P&S only,.

Count me in.

New here, with "only" a P&S.

I'm having a hard time finding my way through a lot of the information here because it simply does not translate to my camera.

I've given up on even the thought of ranking high in a challenge (yes, I've only entered 1) because I simply do not have the technical know-how, nor the at-home studio set-up and accessories to do so.

But, I enjoy photography, and I like what I shoot, and I think that that is what counts.

I'd hardly call your fuji a "point and shoot"... i'd have been quite insulted if someone said that when that was my main camera!

Point and shoot to me says little silver fully automatic bits of rubbish. That fuji, featurewise, has nearly everything a 20D has except for a true viewfinder. Having an EVF doesn't make something a point and shoot camera.

Maybe we could split in two categories instead? like advanced and amateur? That way me as well as many other DSLR owners who are average photographers could meet with average P&S owners while this incredible P&S owner could meet with other incredibles DSLR's and P&S owners?

I have to agree with this. The way I always saw it, there's P&S, there's Prosumer, and there's dSLR, in ascending order. P&S are little, square cameras you stick in a pocket, basically. Prosumers are cameras like The Nikon Coolpix 5700/8700, the Fuji S7000, that new Sony masterpiece; the look like little SLR's, but they don't have interchangeable lenses or optical viewfinders basically. Then the dSLRs are like "real" 35mm SLR cameras except they are digital.

But then people in here started telling me that a 300D was a "prosumer" camera and a "real" dSLR is like the pro body cameras. I con't agree witht hat. I think you have consumer-market dSLR's, crossover dSLRs, and professional dSLRs. Something like the 20D, or now the 5D, is a "crossover" camera, most of the features of a professional body but less-robust build and far less expensive. Plenty of pros use these crossover cameras, either as a main camera or as a backup.

Robt.

I'm not posting because I wanna be on either side, but
this Open Challenge, one for dSLR and the other for P&S is a neat idea :)

I agree, that does sound like a cool idea. Then I might stop getting beat by all the people with dSLR's. :)

Check out the new Fuji S9000 -- it looks great if you like two-handed manual focus and zoom, and has the best wide-angle option in its class. No image-stabilization though ...

Ok, I just like being able to look through glass. I love the A80 and A95 cameras because of that. I like the functions of my S2 a LOT though.

I can take better pictures usually with an A95, but there are some pictures I simply cannot take with it for various reasons.

When all of the features come together, you get a DSLR.

I did 3 sessions to shoot a single picture with over 300 outtakes over 2.5 hours of shooting alone. Mostly because I couldn't get my focus properly locked because of the darned EVF.

On the other hand, I did enjoy the flip and twist screen to compose self-portraits by myself.

ARGH!

What happens if I want to sit with both camps?

Will I be pummeled with sacks full of doorknobs?
