Here's a call-out thread for all those great comments!
I already have 7 wonderful comments on my entry in the current challenge "Best of 2005" and, without giving up which one is my image, I'd like to say "Thank you!" to: IceRock, pgatt, Tranquil, SJCarter, dartompkins, sherpet, jmsetzler....and all those yet to comment. You are what makes this site a great place to be!
We're in a new year. Feel free to add your applause or your memories or the best comments from 2005!
Just a sampling from my year:
Comment by skiprow: what a killer shot! there's nothing i can add except that i'm just going to sit back and enjoy this a bit. great effort!
Comment by goodman: this is great! did you get wet :)
Comment by Bear_Music: Duckie as DPC stock shot, I find this hysterical image
Comment by Kylie: Jinjit always finds great photos that I end up commenting on! Great minds think alike! lol This IS a great capture!!!
...and, as a tribute, the first comment on my first submission last year:
Comment by nordic: if the sharpness was there, this would have been a very good image - good luck
Thank you, all!...for loving my photos more than I do sometimes....for taking the time to tell me that it meant something, lacked something, missed or hit the mark, or that you didn't care because you liked it anyway no matter what the 'voters' say.
;-)
I love all the comments I have received, if yours is not among the above it is not because it was not more humorous, poignant, insightful, or just plain better...it's because I'm too lazy to really give you credit.

Here are some of the best comments I got in 2005:
Comment by graphicfunk:
Top twenty is good, though I would have loved this guy in the top 5. Keep up the good work and congratulations on your finish.
Comment by graphicfunk:
This guy rocks. Bumping up. Another bump for good luck.
Comment by madison461:
Wow!
Comment by TheStick:
OMG!!! Is it real? Great expression!
Comment by Jutilda:
Here it is 2 a.m. and I'm laughing. This is just hilarious. What a cute face. Nice capture!
Comment by RayEthier:
A fantastic shot Alain. You must have a fantastic telephoto lens, or be an unbelievably quiet person when walking through the bush to have captured this beauty. Very well done indeed.
Comment by Alienyst:
Incredible photo! Very well focused. Frame placement is excellent and the color is perfect. Well done!
Comment by eostyles:
Again I have to say this photo is great. Adding it to my favorites. Good job on the challance
Comment by grandmarginal:
Wonderful picture. The composition is perfect! The colors are very smooth on the eyes and the model packs personality! Good luck!
Comment by christinamtodd:
Fabulous exposure, nice off center composition. Rich and creamy color. 10
Comment by BobsterLobster:
Wonderful shot, I wish the frame was wider though with 35mm dimensions. You nailed the exposure. One of my favourites so far this challenge.
The next one is special to me since it's coming from one of the photographer I really admire on this site and the picture did not do very good, but I think Brad saw it just like I did.
Comment by BradP:
Very good eye here!
Great study in textures and light.
And I need to quote you: ;-)
Thank you, all!...for loving my photos more than I do sometimes....for taking the time to tell me that it meant something, lacked something, missed or hit the mark, or that you didn't care because you liked it anyway no matter what the 'voters' say.

Please tell us you're going to frame this and hang it on your wall... What a great capture and gorgeous girl - you should be proud of both. Good job
Comment by rex:
Very well done. I love everything about it. I really like the eyes, very interesting. I am sorry I have nothing to say about making it better. If I were you I would frame it. That is a timeless moment and a very well executed shot.

Comment by OFreasier:
First of all the picture is lovely, the mother's expression is *perfect*. The tones are really nice, lighting seems perfect. And lastly, she's a really brave momma to hold a newborn with no towel or anything, it had to have been a quick photo shoot :) I know firsthand how dangerous it is to do that!
And of course, I LOVE any comment that ends in "adding it to my favorites."
Great topic!
ETA - I made mine clickable because on everyone else's I wanted to see the image that went with the comments.

Returning for comment: In this position, you reminds me of a character from the Simpsons, I dont remember his name--the sidekick of the clown. An interesting take on a self portrait, I like it.
oOWonderBreadOo:
Hmmm what kind of vote do you give a truly amazing photograph that you never want to look at again? :0)
biglongshort:

Interesting shot, horrible teeth

my favorite image of the challenge. I have no idea why.

Joey Lawrence "holy shit I love this. This is the best thing you've ever made."
naldslc "HOLY SHHHHH.....WHAT A POWERFUL IMAGE! Mandy this one totaly blows me away. Again, you impress me with your artistic talent, you are amazing girl!"
The rollover is about to happen so I have to stop with the comments. These I remember so well because I made two people curse! I thought it was so funny and I was so flattered! |

My favorite comments:
Larus: Hahaha, very funny, I actually burst out laughing, everyone here at work probably thinks I am a psycho now. 8 from me.
lindes: I think this image would be a lot more impactful at a slightly different position and/or angle... Perhaps move your camera to the left a bit, but then aim it to the right a bit, so that the tree is on a diagonal like a slash (/)... Just an idea.
(Say what?) ;
TheLittleIsland: I don't find this terribly clever. Why Bacardi? Do you work in the marketing department of Bacardi?
LOL! (and for the exact same photo...)
Givemeashot: Love it!! Every persons Dream!!
And here are some of the nicest predictions:
Evaan: SUBERB lighting on the feathers and on the handle and right side of the purse as well. One of my favorites. You deserve a ribbon.
(Scored a 5.192)
Ivory: Great angle and use of DOF, good luck I think this should definately be on the first page
(Scored a 5.607)
Thank you for all your comments...the good and the not-so-good. This just goes to show that there is such a wide range of voting preference here at DP. Somebody told me that they hated this site so much they loved it. I get it! :)

The first comment on my first entry, from PennyLane:
"wow!"
From Art Roflmao on my only ribbon (blue) winner:
"I'm only 10% through voting and I'm calling RIBBON right here, right now. Stunning, beautiful, awesome, and many other adjectives I would use when I pick my jaw up off the floor. :)"
Funniest/oddest comment, from dockie (funny because I had said the church was in Ottawa, I think I would have known if I were in Montreal):
"isn't that in Montreal?"
Another one from Art Roflmao:
"And lo, the angel of the Lord said unto them, "pass the crackers & salami" :) Clever, funny and well executed."

I have so many wonderful and helpful comments from last year. These are just some of the extraordinary ones, lengthy and motivating, or particularly funny for some reason or another:
although it was in response to a not so wonderful comment I really appreciate this response in defence of my recent ribbon winner:
Comment by CaseWriter21:
Bullie, this is what we see: Someone who loooks to be a manager at a news stand, an old guy, been around the block, knows a lot. He's looking at us -- not the camera man, but us -- inviting us to look around, pick up a newspaper, see what's going on in this city. But if we read it, he says with a sly smirk, we gotta pay. No freeloading.
Or maybe he is looking at the camera man. You think you're taking a picture of ME? the man asks with a smirk. Nah, this ain't me. This is the mask I wear when I run this booth. You don't know the real me.
And I absolutely love the Advil box next to the man's hand. Subtly conveys the noise and busyness that is city life.
It doesn't matter if my interpretation is off -- if we're really in a Barnes and Noble, for instance, or if that man is just a customer. What matters is that the picture, the expression, the surroundings instantly told me a compelling story. It takes a lot of skill and a little luck to catch a picture like that.
That's what everyone saw in this picture.
Comment by Joey Lawrence:
one mean cock you got there
Comment by BradP:
Love the perspective on this shot & the way the leaves are cleared away just ahead her area. THIS is the kind of photography that moves me and most want to do.
For sure something I would be proud to call my own.
I would like to take this time to thank ubique for some of my best comments of the year. What I appreciate about his comments is the fact that I get to hear how he interpreted my photograph and not just a word or two. This is my favorite type of feedback. More than technical advice or a nice word or two. I love to hear what people are thinking when they look at my work. Here are two examples:
Comment by ubique:
Ha! Reminds me of that old story about if a tree falls & nobody's there, does it make a noise? ..... Is beauty there if we don't look at it? - that's what I'm thinking this is about. This guy can't afford the time to stand and gape at this beautiful scene right now, but the beauty's still there & he knows it, and that's just fine for him today.
Another interpretation is that our world is a wonderful place, but it is that way, and more importantly it stays that way, not because of the gushings of greenies and mystics and environmental activists, but because of the efforts of regular people who are prepared to quietly get on with making a living ... these people make it possible for the rest to stand and gape (and later complain because this guy drives to work in a truck rather than a solar-powered rickshaw).
This photograph invites all sorts of allegorical interpretations like that, as so much of your work does.
That's what makes it so terrific for me; it's a beautiful image, masterfully processed, but it's also so much more than that; it's also ABOUT something. Something thoughtful and important that the viewer cannot ignore. And that viewer has to do some thinking, too. The viewer's not a spectator, the viewer is a participant in your work. And that's what separates art from mere pretty pictures. Bravo.
Comment by ubique:
This is wonderful. The soiled and partly 'buried' body recalls organic decomposition; the ultimate 'dead end'. But that's not all ... there's at least one other whole level of meaning to explore; the deep drift of autumn leaves provides another kind of 'dead end'. And then there's the clever title, which seems to be a sly reference to both of these interpretations of the image; the body falling to dust, and the fall leaves. Brilliantly conceived and superbly executed - it's original, thoughtful and technically excellent, and it's awfully rare to get all three of those together here! 10.
Comment by e301:
Even without seeing the 'ladybug' - which would anyway be difficult, given the colouration - I certainly got a feeling ffrom this image which matched your title: almost entirely impressionistic, really, as I'd be very hard pushed to sya exactly why this worked for me. Too many of the properly sophisticated photographers here have ceased submitting very often, and I'm very glad that you continue to do so, however often your stuff is misunderstood.
Oh, and I thoroughly appreciate these rare comments by one of my favorite photographers :)

You know If I haven't done so already, I would like to give Ubique the proper thanks here and now for leaving me so many rich, thoughtful, in depth comments. Thank You!
Ubique-There's something very welcoming and even comforting about this, Steve. It takes the viewer on a nice tour, starting from the couple at the kerb, reaching up to the neon sign, sliding across the awning, tumbling down the light-coloured column next door, then slipping along the top of the SUV to the walking guy, who directs us in through the window with nothing more than a glance! I like it; it makes me think 'neighbourhood'. I also like the fact that the walking guy, although not immediately visually prominent, is actually a very important element of the image. I agree with Sher ... this is really good street photography.
Oh! ...and after that there was Laurie Black's comment on a now hidden image...
"Holy Crap...this Rocks!!!"
...it's a keeper. LOL

To JPR & pawdrix:
Sorry I had missed this thread, & so have failed until now to thank you for your generous tributes.
It's easy to give good comments when the photographer has already done all the hard work for you! |
