Jhonan, SHUT UP! LOL...You are SUCH an instigator, you know that? Following my posts, reading them intensely, and swooping in with your flames at every juncture is really very childish. GROW UP!

Ok, now my take on this is that a lot of people are really not intuned with what backlighting is. I know I myself started a thread on it called "backlighting dislexia". I had my own problems. Then I took into the research I normally do on the subject.

A lot of the shots I am seeing are sidelit, front lit, bottom lit, and quite frankly, some have no lighting source at all. Some ARE silouetted no matter how you want to define it. Dark, black, shadows, etc. and the lighting doesn't enhance an object or subject IF it is so dark you can't make out any detail.

Don't think for an instant that my own low score is causing me to write as I have this morning, or as I did last night. I knew when I entered this challenge it would be controversial, and the scoring would fluctuate and probably to my disandvantage seeing how there are so many from so many parts of the world and this was basically a free study on lighting. My score has risen now, but to get a comment saying it is not a backlit entry or DNMC, LOL...it makes me laugh. Obviously the person took little time to see which direction the light was coming from which can easily be seen in the detail of the subject.

In any case, it seems a lot of people are getting hit on this one, and I have to agree wholeheartedly with "TheDruid" here. And Bear_music, surely you must know that TheDruid could be talking about a similar image taken in the same place at the same angle at another date?

Well, this one is anyone's game really. I do have my fav's, so we shall see what happens! My best to all of you.

Rose

No, it means I'm so far behind the people who ARE scoring 7 that I can't see their tail lights.

Keeps going down and down. Probably another sub-6 image for Captain 5.9xxx when everything will be said and done. But I really don't care. My mantra for 2006 is try the best I can and submit images to DPC that I truly like and consider fitting the challenges.

Told ya...

cloaking words like "SHUT UP" in all caps with an "LOL" does little to diminsh the rudeness of those words in the first place. i also think calling someone childish is a bit out of line.

Well, I could rephrase it using different wording that would keep it inline instead of out of line, but I won't bother so this thread doesn't get off track.

After reading this thread, and the fact this is my first challenge and I took the photo with a hand-held compact camera, I'm really happy so far :)

Sheesh, I'll swap ya then! :p I'll gladly take a 5.9!

Well, in the end, I chose one 10, three 9's, and about nine 8's, and a couple of 7's now. The rest are 6 and below. :(

My score is rising. I guess as they wean through the many entries, I can't imagine in not continuing to go up, although I believe the winner for this will end up with a high 6 range to 7 or mid 7 ranger. I am going to presume a personal goal on this one for me to final at a 5.5.

OKkkkk, so on to "road". I won't be doing sign. Not liking that one, but I do have the perfect road shot already. I just have to travel there to get it, and will do that most likely today.

Best to you!

I just received this comment:

Looks like you did not read the challenge description:
"the subject must not become a silhouette because of the backlighting"

I find this comment kind of funny since none of the other commenters mention a silhouette. Plus, I know for a fact that the main subject of my image is NOT a silhouette. I guess everybody can't have a properly calibrated monitor.

Oh well, it's just one vote.

I'm with you. I have one comment. "not a backlit entry". LOL.....I think calibrations aren't the only thing that is "off" LOL...

Do not take it seriously. It is not worth crap. What is worth something is how you present your vision. This is only one site, like one gallery. There are thousands of galleries. Some will take your art and call it genius, others will call it crap. Place the photos on all sorts of sites. here you maybe told it is only worth a 5, but after the first $100 dollars in sales for the same image on a different site, you will realize that different strokes for different folks.

Mine is already less then a 5, but is earning me money on the stock sites. I would rather have the money.

You have an image that was taken within the last week that is "already earning [you] money on the stock sites" (note the plural)? Damn that's fast work!

R.

Yup, part of the upload cycle, I upload to all the sites at the same time that take the same format, then I fill in one and cut and paste it across the rest the uploads.

It only needs to be resized or cropped differently for here due to the size restriction. So far, stock sites have taken less than one week to post or deny. Another thing is one will reject a photo and another accept the photo.

Other sites that require mailed in CD's and Galleries that may require a slide take longer or if a model release is required and verified.

At least that has been my experience to date.

If you get a not a backlit image by me or a DNMC and you have an issue with that, then PM me, I already have a few like that. But be sure to mention your pic name and justify why you think that and I will go and re-evaluate it, if I still disagree I will say so in my comments and why I do. Also understand I am very closely looking at images for the backlighting and siloutting

"Shut up!" is usually not a good thing to say, even in fun.

All shots have some lighting source, or they would be completely black.

You are right, however, that there are a fair number of silhouettes in the challenge, and the challenge description mentioned that the subject shouldn't become a silhouette.

BTW, the description did not say light had to be natural light.

It is not so easy to always tell the light source in a picture. It also is a bit harsh to say that other people took little time or care in making their pictures without knowing much about them. Many people here are trying their best, you included. It would be good to give us a bit more credit.

Lowest score ever. I thought there may be a problem with it, and it's in my comments, but that doesn't help here. :) I know what it is...I used the natural light from the kitchen window for backlighting. Problem is...our windows are two-story high Anderson windows...so I got top lighting, too. Duh. (But no silhouette!)
Hey, if the highlight of the photo is backlit, can you fellow voters cut us just a wee bit of slack? ;)
(Nah, if I have to explain it, I missed it with this one. Next time!)

I think that I gave more high scores than in any challenge before, nice.
6.1000 And I wasn´t even satisfied with the quality of my entry. =)

Nothing in the contest said you couldnt use additional lighting, just stated to use backlighting and not let the subject become a silhouette, matter facet it explains back lighting as lighting from behind or to highlight somthing in the background hence you could be using top light and back light or side light and backlight

Thank you, nemesise1977! That's why I let it ride, even when I noticed that...I was hoping people would look at the featured part (distinctly highlighted) and not focus on the additional lighting. My score just went up a few notches, too, so maybe people are reading this thread and being a little less particular? :)
