I agree with you here. To me, I think most of the votes came from the uniqueness of the subject more than meeting theme. I "guess" it is backlit? But it isn't very obvious.

Someone mentioned on another thread that transparency would be the key in this challenge. We certainly are seeing a lot of those! LOL...But as for this, maybe the light is shining through the body? I can't tell.

or translucency.

not to say the snail was a bad shot - just curious...

Ok, now my take on this is that a lot of people are really not intuned with what backlighting is. I know I myself started a thread on it called "backlighting dislexia". I had my own problems. Then I took into the research I normally do on the subject.

A lot of the shots I am seeing are sidelit, front lit, bottom lit, and quite frankly, some have no lighting source at all. Some ARE silouetted no matter how you want to define it. Dark, black, shadows, etc. and the lighting doesn't enhance an object or subject IF it is so dark you can't make out any detail.

Don't think for an instant that my own low score is causing me to write as I have this morning, or as I did last night. I knew when I entered this challenge it would be controversial, and the scoring would fluctuate and probably to my disandvantage seeing how there are so many from so many parts of the world and this was basically a free study on lighting. My score has risen now, but to get a comment saying it is not a backlit entry or DNMC, LOL...it makes me laugh. Obviously the person took little time to see which direction the light was coming from which can easily be seen in the detail of the subject.

In any case, it seems a lot of people are getting hit on this one, and I have to agree wholeheartedly with "TheDruid" here. And Bear_music, surely you must know that TheDruid could be talking about a similar image taken in the same place at the same angle at another date?

Well, this one is anyone's game really. I do have my fav's, so we shall see what happens! My best to all of you.

Rose

If you get a not a backlit image by me or a DNMC and you have an issue with that, then PM me, I already have a few like that. But be sure to mention your pic name and justify why you think that and I will go and re-evaluate it, if I still disagree I will say so in my comments and why I do. Also understand I am very closely looking at images for the backlighting and siloutting

Sorry, I missed this. Nope, wasn't you. But thanks for the offer!!

LOL...

Well, I'm at nearly a 5.2; I arose from a deadening 4.6, so I am happy!

Mine is starting to show signs of improvement. But I'm suffering from the "It's a Silhouette" syndrome from the voters :( I suspected that would happen going into this challenge, so I'm OK with it.

Voters have lightened up a little....(sigh of relief).
Hate to jinx it, but if this score keeps inching up, it might NOT
be my lowest score yet. Stay happy, friends. :)

This image is very backlit. So much so that the light is highlighting the translucence of the boisy, and actuall rimming the protrusions where it has less flesh to penetrate. The photographer used a reflector or, perhaps, a gentle fill light to keep detail in the darker areas and on the shell. It's an absolutely beautiful example of controlled backlighting IMO.

There seems to be a tendency to think backlighting means "only one light source" and that's directly at odds with the instruction NOT to use a silhouette. Most really good baclit shots have fill light of one sort or another, if only the sky light that siftens a backlit landscape.

Bear I couldn't agree more that people seem to think the light source is coming only from one direction(behind). I actually have 6 light sources on my subject. Like I stated before I learned something new so it was a good challenge. My scores aren't what I had hoped and of course disappointed since I know I have improved and are better then other challenges I have entered. But life goes on...

Going up! :) Started at around 4.4.. Woa, if I get to 5 on my first challenge I'm going to be really happy! Especially since it seems average scores in this challenge is a bit low, even for experienced photographers.

Too bad I only got one comment so far out of 102 voters.. maybe there's not that much to comment on? Maybe that's the way it usually is for "average" entries around the 5-mark? Nothing really bad to comment on, and nothing really outstanding to comment on either..

I am happy with this:)

i didn't mean it in a negative way - only saying that it appears the 'main' light is coming from above. i don't thing the upper highlights were created through the translucency of the snail. also i would expect more light on the lower portion if the main light was behind.

i don't think backlighting means only one source of light, actually used two in my entry - one behind, and one in front/above.

not trying to knock that image - it's a wonderful photo.

Look at that and I haven't gone back to bump up. Everything is with placeholders in 5,6,7.

I always enjoy the baghead comment "nice photo" which goes along roughly (somewhere in the last few # of votes) with a drop from 5.83 to 5.70...
