I don't think it means not to center and use rule of thirds, yes the rule of thrids is used for composition a lot but thats not what the challenge says. and I read the challenge as either the background needs color OR the subject has color.

I thought member challenges generally scored higher then opens? I dont see images worthy of the low scores posted here. Of course I'm generally not a low voter either. I'm not referring to mine, Its scoring about where I thought it would.

I guess a lot read differently to what the description meant. I wonder if the same would have occured with entries if only the challenge title was present. To me, it seems like a lot of entries reflect the title more then the description. I also think that is why it is best to discuss the challenges before hand, although many get pretty disgusted with that. :)
To me, when I read it, I pictured oh, let's say for example sake, a colorfully dressed person walking along the street by themselves. So you would have the subject matter the actual street, perse`, or the scenery, but then the photo would be offset by this one lone person which would draw the eye immediately too it. So the subject isn't the colorfully dressed person, but that person offset your subject matter with the burst of color.
A bit more complicated then just "burst of color" in the entire photo I think, and one I worked pretty hard to convey. But, to each his own. I do see quite a few that thought it like I did.

after a poor entries in the last few challenges (they were poor but I entered anyway hoping I would get some pointers on how to improve...) I was really hopeful about his one! in fact I thought it was my best entry yet... but my score just seems to be dropping by the minute... I dispair!
I thought the whole "offset" thing just meant the subject had to stand out from the background... and mine does!
oh well...
better next time!
ps: is it just me that doesn't really like the winning picture in the "Mother" challenge... I'm sure technically they are all very good but to me they seemed just a bit sweet and sickly... |

I'm happy. Solid score to start the new year with (maybe it will go up!) and I've got comments, which are solid gold to me. I'd rather have a good collection of comments than a 8.0 score.

I broke 5.8!! Should be my best so far. Ok, calm down....wait..there is a troll lurking waiting to steal your thunder....either way, best one yet. I am definitly glad I joined DPC as my images (thanks to you wonderful folks and the comments/suggestions/ideas) seem to get better each time. (Except those last minute things...) |

Wow--my first favorite!! That means more to me than the score (which is reasonably good for me). One thing I can say for sure about my entry, it may not be the most amazing shot ever, but it follows the challenge parameters to the letter. That must be helping me a bit, and the comments I'm getting reflect that. Cool! |

Oh well... At least it got me out shooting. If I had it to do over I would probably put one of the bird photos I have here: //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=48224&collection_id=12072
Nothing really that creative about those and although colorful the color is pretty much throughout the whole picture....but overall those were much better photos than what I actually submitted.
I know if I had done what I had originally intended to do for this challenge it would likely place high. I had a very clear picture in my head much like I did with my other winning entries. Just couldn't get my colorful object finished in time. I guess I'll just have to save that idea and fit it in somewhere down the line.

Slightly rising, but still not what i expected. I need to learn to stay away from these challenges, too open to interpretation. |

You are right. Some people don't understand what they read!!! |
I agree with this post too. I totally see the word "offset" used in photography all of the time, and it means to not center the photo or use rule of thirds, etc. It doesn't mean "stand out". I have rethought this after discussing it on another thead, and now I am convinced the colorful part should be offset. I will have to revote tomorrow. Too much confusion and being tired and all. I will have to give another look over.
Rose | You are both wrong. (Oh sorry- IMHO) It really does not make any sense your way, if you think about it.

ya'll got me beat! Now I know everyone can figure out which is mine....did you have to give me those bad scores? It's not that bad technically is it? The subject is offset by the color surrounding said subject. I can understand if you don't care for my subject, but you gotta give me slack okay?

I'm naive and you're really joking, right? I'm a fairly new participant on this site, so I waited 15 minutes to see if anyone else would object to you asking for slack in the scoring of your photo which you believe that they can identify. Isn't this normally found unaccpetable by those who frequent these forums? Or again, you were joking, right? |
