I am looking for a walkaround lense for my digital rebel. I have the kit lense and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. I am looking for something to replace to kit lense, and hopefully go all the way to the bottom end of the 70-300. Maybe like 18-75 or something around there. My budget is $400.

Stop looking... go get the Tamron 28-75. You won't be unhappy. :)

Yep.

Can someone tell me a bit more about this lens? It sounds like the perfect Christmas present for me!!

The 28-75 range may not very good for a 1.6x crop sensor as you have no wide angle coverage.

If you like the 18-55 range, then Canon's 17-85 maybe worth a consideration, but it's more than $400.
Another option is the Sigma 18-50.
If you don't need the wider angle and don't mind the 28-75 range, the Tamron maybe a good choice.
Good luck.

I don't want the wider angle. I want something a bit closer in. I'm not really into wide angle shots so I'd like something more inbetween my 75-300, 55-200 and my 18-55.

28-75 2.8 so it's 2.8 at 28mm and 2.8 at 75mm which means really good low light photography. It's sharp, it's built well - it's the best walkaround lens you can get without spending much more $. It's attached fairly permanently to my cam.

The options i considered after much research:

canon 17-95 IS USM - nice, but $600.
Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX - $500 ish (mine i got on ebay new for $440) constant ap, fast, wide, more range, faster and cheaper than
Canon 17-40 4L - L glass. $600 i think.

I wanted more range than than the 50mm on the long end - 50 ius fine indoors, but outside it is not enough. I skipped the 28-75 2.8 Tamron ($300ish) as i had a cheap 28-80 and 28 wasn't wide enough and i had a 2.,8 lens (the sigma)

After some research i found it - Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6. This is one nice lens - super super sharp, very fast focus and does macro too! (great in a walk around - you are covered for anything!). $400. I could not find one single bad review or comment about this lens. Now that i have used it for a month, i see why!
Some shots...

I don't know much about the lens yet, but if your looking for versatile, Tamron has a 18-200. It's for digital cams, and has pretty good range for a single walkaround lens. It's priced at $400(US) and I believe currently has a rebate. Not very fast though, if that's what you're looking for.

I do want to be able to take wide angle shots as well. Like I said, I would prefer something that would totally cover the range of the kit lense, and go farther on the zoom side. I am not sure how much I woul be loosing by going from 18-28, but going from 18-24 couldn't be to bad could it? I was thinking about that canon 17-95, and I found it for only $500, but that is just a little to much right now. Do you think I should wait for that, or is there not a considerable difference between it and these other lenses?

Prof .. thank you very much for the information on the Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 lens!! It is perfect!! Exactly what I was looking for and I immediately put it as the only thing I want for Christmas :)

i dont know how much you care about optical quality but the tamron 28-75 would be second only to the 17-40L of all the lenses suggested so far in this thread. I need good looking shots at 100% for the type of photography i do, so optical quality is always the most important factor for me when buying a lens. You wont regret buying the tamron 28-75, it is an amazing lens.

What bout something like the Sigma 18-125mm f3.5-5.6?

Covers wide and short tele and is small and light.

I see a big diff betweed 18 and 28, but not much between 18 and 24. 3 steps outdoors maybe...i can live with that. The 135 on the long end is really handy though.

I tried the tammie 24-135 at the same time as the canon 17-85 and i can't tell the difference in sharpness and the speed of focus.

I guess I will go with the tamron 24-135. Thanks for the suggestions.

Me too....if you mean wide for outdoors you're probably fine....but if you want to take indoor shots it's tight...of course I live in a small house :) Using the 28-75 isn't wide enough for me indoors (again at my house) but works great for everything else! I use the 18-55 for indoors (holidays, etc)

I would use this walking around outside, I guess I could keep the 18-55 for indoor use.

challenge yourself... get the canon 35mm f/2.0 prime and walk around with that. It sharp, faster than any zoom lens, allows you to work with shallow depth of field if you wish, and makes a cool buzzing sound when you focus.

Too small? Is it a canon EF/EOS lens or did he oops! and get some Nikon mount lens or something?
12/25/2005 01:23:35 AM · #22
I think he oopsed.. cuz he's not camera smart and got it on ebay :( It is a beautiful lens .. it just doesn't fit my camera .. just sits and spins, no lock in. He just gave me $250 to fix it though :)

It runs $400 give or take $10. Post it here and see if you can sell it (no ebay fees!!) or over at www.fedmiranda.com in the sales forum. It's a well respected lens there so it should go quickly - $325 or 350 i should think without a problem.

Well, I use the Sigma 18-200. The lense does a good job and is around $340, relatively inexpensive for the range it covers. It hardly comes off my camera...

Here is a photo at the 18mm end...

Here is one at the 200mm zoom end...

I just bought the sigma 18-200mm for a friend with a Canon and she loves it. I own a D70 and cannot wait to get the 18-200 Nikon VR II. I travelled for with my family for 6 weeks around the world and reckon an 18-200mm would have been the only lens I would use. I have a Sigma 10-20mm which I used 80% of the time because there is nothing like superwide. But if I had to narrow it down to a walkaround lens, it would be an 18-200mm.
