maybe not a very visual pun, but if you're short on ideas:
a bean is bean but a pea is a relief
:)

I have way too many ideas for this. The question is if the pun is a real groaner do you get hit in the voting!

As far as I'm concerned, the 'groanier' the better.

I'd personally vote up for a good groaner.

I'm really excited about this one. I have one decent idea, but I'm still shopping for that perfect pun.

I'm with you. I had about 6 ideas I wanted to go with; all but two were ideas I got from others. I wanted to use one I came up with on my own. I narrowed it down by choosing one of those two and then by expense to create it....LOL, and wha-lah, my entry was complete.

As for votes? Hmmmm, well, you know what? I think we all get hits in the voting no matter WHAT we enter! LOL....(well, at least most of us)

Damn, I have a great idea (I think) but with all the puns posted it here it will show up sooner or later. If so, do you think it will be voted down for "someone else's idea"?

Your are correct. You not only want to minimize prop expense but also avoid shopping at this time of year!

My wife an I have come up with 25 ideas so far.

It's really too bad that they made this a member challenge when she came up with the challenge idea.. Can't afford a membership for her until next week :o(

Guess we'll have to see.

I tease my daughter about her name all the time A Man D'uh! (Amanda)

So how do you think I'd do if I just posted a portrait of a man and titled it "Amanda"?

LOL..You got THAT right. Although Wal-Mart, in my sticks of the woods, is about the only thing going for shopping, I really didn't have a bad time. I have the advantage of being able to shop at great hours, so it wasn't all that bad. This challenge cost me about $8, so not that bad this time. LOL...Sometimes? Nadda, sometimes higher, but $8 aint too bad.

Let's see, let me envision this. A mans portait, and a man duh for an entry? Mmmm, depending on the handsomeness of the guy, I would say about a 5 or 6 from me! LOL...

i wouldn't say that it really visually expresses a pun. If you had her making a "duh" motion with a hand to her forehead, you'd have a slightly better connection...

Somehow the "candlelight" thread morphed into a discussion of how voters will handle the puns in this challenge, and I posted the following. I decided to copy it over here just to go on record :-)

**************

Just to try to bring this back on track, I am struck by how hung up people are getting over what a verbal pun is (or is not), over how to define the concept "pun". The challenge is NOT "Puns", it is "Visual Puns". This is a photography site, people, the ongoing "poems and images" thread notwithstanding. Here's your challenge:

Visual Puns: ." A pun is a play on words which have a similar sound but different meanings. Now it's your turn to take a photograph that visually represents a different application of a word or words."

The challenge is NOT limited to "illustrating a verbal pun", and I am vaguely incredulous that some seem to think it is. The challenge is to make a "visual" pun. The aforementioned examples are excellent responses to the challenge, IMO: butter with wings, cows full of holes, fork in the road, etc. These are excellent visual puns even if they are mediocre (or even execrable) verbal puns.

I swear I am going to head for the rant forum with all guns blazing if this challenge votes up the "best" verbal puns at the expense of truly excellent visual puns.

'Nuff said!

Thank you very much for clarifying this. I was beginning to get a bit worried when it was said that things like "holy cow" would or could not be a visual pun and probably voted on as such. I didn't enter that, but for an example, it wasn't taken well.

For the record, I haven't "clarified" anything, just expressed an opinion. The voters, in the end, will do whatever they do.

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were clarifying a visual verses verbal pun. Me bad. Me sorry. Let the voters commence!!(soon..LOL) Hey, you clarified it for me anyway on what is and isn't a go in this challenge.

Like I said, it doesn't matter which one they portray in photo to me. As long as I 'get it', LOL...I will vote accordingly!

Two different approaches to a play on words: looks like something different vs. sounds like something different.

Visual (the words don't change, but it looks like something different):

Verbal (using another word that sounds the same, but means something different):

The challenge is visual, but the example in the challenge description is verbal, so I suspect that either can be acceptable if executed well. Note that the pun isn't as obvious in the second example because it's completely dependent upon the title.

Robert - You left out the first part of the challenge description. "Relief - what trees do in the spring." .

How does that impact the thinking?

To use the example: If an image showing a tree sprouting new leaves is used with the title of 'Relief' - what is it? Visual or Verbal? Does it matter? (obviously, being winter this scenario is hypothetical).
