Jnmuggy's original post in its entirety:

just wanted to say how much I hate when people hide their profiles during voting. If you are going to give useless criticism, show who you are. What are people gaining by hiding their profile. Kind of weak in my opinion.

My response, in its entirety:

Freedom from having to receive/read rebuttals during voting. I've notice no correlation between "bagheads" and "useless comments" in voting on my images, for what it's worth. This isn't a battle that's worth fighting IMO. Voting is anonymous; I see no reason why one shouldn't opt for anonymous commenting during the challenge, if this is one's preference.

His question was "What are people gaining by hiding their profile?" and I answered it seriously. How did I antagonize or ridicule?

Sorry. I meant coolhars:

"My opinion is that it's kind of weak to be bad mouthing someone simply because they took advantage of one of the options the site offers. Actually, I think it would be better if all comments were anonymous until after voting is finished."

He/it/she was already assuming that what jmuggy said was badmouthing, and that was not necessary. I didn't take it that way. I took it as just the way jmguggy felt as to how it was worded, and it wasn't meant to outwardly ridicule or badmouth IMO. I think it was those who are bagheads that found it offensive, especially if they have left useless critique.

However, nonetheless, the thread's mood was set from that point on, IMO.

Well, you may call that antagonistic, but I don't think it's any more so than the original post, which after all used the phrases "useless criticism" and "Kind of weak in my opinion".

Seems to me the two posts were on a par, and not particularly objectionable either...

Good for you. I won't argue ad nauseum about it. I will just simply disagree with you. Now can we move on?

AND, for girlwithapen? She had a DIFFERENT view. You shouldn't have directed her to this thread. This thread was about the bagged and gagged and useless critique under shroud, and not about constructive critique or not with or without a shroud. I think that was pretty rude right there to just cut her off and "direct" her to another thread. BUT, then again, that is where we differ in opinions, which is obviously in MANY areas.

Perhaps I am. Perhaps I'm not. On second thought, maybe it does matter who I am--I've been around here for over a year now, but I rarely post in the forums, and haven't participated in many challenges yet. In that sense, I'm just as new here as you are. I know no one here; I have no cronies. Yet, I don't feel intimidated or antagonized by anyone here. Perhaps this is because I don't feel the need to attack or insult those who differ in opinion.

I am not the one who said I look at profiles to judge commentors. I was the one who agreed with jmuggy on that point as to the reasoning that anon in voting shouldn't be so. For his sake, not mine. I could care less about any comments really. I would prefer only votes be made without comment, but obviously not everyone feels the same.

If you think I am a loudmouth and rude, then why are you associating with me right now by replying if you don't associate with them? Me thinks you really are here just for the hayride.

When I am not attacked for differing in opinion, well then, maybe I will feel just as you do. But differences is what makes the world go round, so we all have them and always will.

Precisely my point. One liners to get a laugh at the expense of others. Real adult. Why don't you go play on your "croney birthday" threads? I have to wonder if you didn't have a better use for the word, you wouldn't have even started a thread on bear-musics birthday.

Then again, mine was the 15th this month. I didn't see any welcomes from the crowd. Maybe one or two AFTER I mentioned it, but then again, I don't expect that newbies are well received anyway. More competition doesn't always draw friendships.

Have a nice day, and a very happy birthday to your cronies!

i think im making enemies. I started this thread because I am new here and wanted to gather some opinions. Seems like people thought I was attacking. I did say I thought the bag was weak, but that doesn't make anyone a bad person. I wanted to know why people feel the need to be anon, it was answered so thank you all. This thread has become very agressive and we should change the subject.

Knowing that I have about 100 people watching/commenting on my original, I will ask this...

WIll a score of 6 be good enough for the top 10 in single light source? Why?

I wonder how this site got so large if we're so unaccepting of newbies? If you take a moment to view my profile, which you've already stated you're uninterested in doing, you'll note that I don't enter very many challenges so additional competition really makes no difference to me. I think you'll find that the majority of the people here have had no problems making friends on the site, with other new people or with the "vets." I do have to wonder why, if you've heard such awful things about this site and we hold such a reputation of being cruel to the new people, that you decided to join? (Which isn't to say that I don't think you should have, before you start with that.)

Agreeing with someone with a similar opinion in a thread doesn't instantly make them your cronies. I barely know most of the people you've accused of being my cronies so far. Are you and jmnuggy cronies? Are you part of a newbie secret circle?

By the way, my birthday thread is here in case you wanted to add your belated wishes.

I agree with you. Let's move on.

After now seeing there were 288 entries to light source, I "think" it may have to be higher then a 6. If you look at the other past contests and the amount of entries verses who won and their average, it may give you a better idea. However, things can change depending on the amount of voters too, so its really anyones guess. I really think that it depends on many factors aside from the mathematical.

If you can keep a 6 at any rate, that is great!!! I am quite pleased my triptych and camo are both staying in the 5.3's. Being only the second and third entry of mine, I was just hoping to stay at 5.0 with a goal of 5.5, so middle of that "hoping" road is still pleasing to me.

Best thing is to just set your own personal goal IMO, and then hope for the best from there. But each contest is really a crap shoot.

My personal guess would be no. I think a 6.5 plus would have a better chance. It seems like the challenges lately have been ending with a winner in the upper sixes and lower sevens. If you check out the challenge history page, you can see what the winning vote was. However, there's really no way of telling ahead of time. If it's a lower scoring challenge, maybe 6 will be enough.

UMmmm, the thread starter here has changed the subject now, for good reason. Care to join in?

To answer one thing? I joined and then got the information about this site.

If you feel attacked it is not because of your differing opinion, it is because of your attitude.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think anything you've said here was out of line. Like Rose says, "differences is what makes the world go round".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIIIIIRTHDAY DEAR UNLCLEBROOOOOO, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

Now WIPE those tears!!

How do you think others should think about their scores in the different competitions? I think this is a good question. How about we all state what we are happy with personally, and then state what we feel a score is needed to win? "IS" a 6 or 6.5 really good enough for a win? Or is it actually just a crap shoot? OR can it be mathematically summized based on amount of entries what a winning score would be??

I think the scores are going to look very similar to the garbage II challenge. I think the scores are going to be relatively low. I think this because it isn't a straight forward challenge such as landscape. Everyone would agree that the top three in landscapes are great pictures.

I think the light source challenge is going to be a love it or hate it type challenge with scores all over the board which will bring down the average scores of great photos.

That is very true too, and not an aspect I have given thought to. Thanks for provoking that thought. If a contest is more straight forward, such as landscape, where very few have questions as to what it really means, then the scores are most likely going to be reflected well on each photo as long as some feel that composition, et al, are there. However, in something like Camoflauge, where several have questions between Camoflauge and Disguise, it may effect the votes, and to win, a lower score may be a winning one. Hmmmm, that even throws more speculation as to what scores may or may not be good ones now. UGHHHHH! LOL....
