If you could choose 10 photographers from DPC based on your personal likes/styles or if you were starting a full service photography business and needed varied talent, which 10 members would you choose and for what reasons.

Here are mine in no particular order:

1. elsapo - Pure, clean raw eye for landscape and color.
2. Joey Lawrence - Major moody photographer that not only captures a mood, but has something really deep to report behind every photo.
3. Jutilda - Only thing holding this girl back is her camera (hint hint)! Very good eye for just about anything, probably willing to anything to get her shot. Post editing skills are excellent as well. Very good sense of humor too.
4. arnit - His action shots are great. If there is anything fast happening, he can stop it with his shutter.
5. rscorp - His wildlife and architecture photos are amazing.
6. annah - Have you seen this girls work? She is like a female Joey Lawrence with no where to go but up.
7. tuckersmom - Her work is as good as any multiple ribbon winner at dpc (imo) and its just a matter of time before she is famous.
8. bear_music- This guy is a must have if you need water/landscape shots in your new booming business. Wow.
9. cutter - His landscapes are full of color and execellent composition. You must check out his Paradise Folder in his portfolio. Amazing.
10. Fetor - He is my son. But he has also taught me a ton about photography and he is a perfectionist in his work. Not to mention he is severely colorblind! His strength would be studio/commercial.

Honorable Mentions (in case I couldn't afford any of the above mentioned photographers) -

srugolo - How did I fail to get him in the top 10 I'll never know. I hope he will forgive me. His work is simply breathtaking.

Do you mean my top 5 fav photographers? Top 5 I would like to beat? What?
10/23/2005 12:20:26 AM · #3
No, if you were starting a business or if you needed 5 photographers other than yourself to put together some sort of important project, which would you choose and why?

For example.

If you chose Librodo it would obviously be because of his ability to do excellent portraiture.

If you chose elsapo, it might be because he does superior landscapes or what have you.

Thread expecations are low here....so have fun with it...

Hmmmm.... let's see.

Probably:

bear_music
Gibun
rgo
calliopekel
JoeyLawrence
Pedro

Sorry... I had to go with 6 and not 5. If I could add 4 more, it would be Mandyturner, BradP, tuckersmom and librodo.
10/23/2005 12:25:23 AM · #6
Ok, maybe we should change the rules to 10. 5 really isn't nearly enough. LOL

Jutilda...you have to state why you chose them.
10/23/2005 12:26:47 AM · #7
Pedro .. His photo\'s evoke so much emotion from me. I tend to see things alot like he does. (I just wish I could capture them as well.) His confidence, personality and humour burst through the photographs so magically. You can see his subjects are at ease. The thing I like best about his work is that he captures the ~deep down soul~ essence of who and whatever he is shooting. Candid/portraits.. need I say more? They are brilliant in my opinion. Diversity is the word that rests on my tongue with him.. no matter where or what he just "gets it".. and the best thing about that is typically I get it too!!

Joey.. the risk taker. He is raw, in your face and I think the thing I like the very best about Joey\'s work is that he tells a story honestly just as he sees it as well as how other\'s his age see the world.. its refreshing and sometimes a slap in the face. Being a young man its interesting to see the edge and seemingly years ahead of his photography. His perspective is extremely valued to me because he joyfully embraces the daily artistic challenge to create beauty on his own life's canvas... I hope he never loses that fresh outlook and pioneering bravery.

Alecia.. she has such a fresh eye.. she sees the things other people maybe notice but dont take the time to capture, the little details of a scene or situation that just bring it to life. There is so much hope and emotion behind her work its hard not to be drawn into that. Her attention to detail is astounding and she is able to lead you exactly where you need to be to see it like she sees it.

Sher.. gives light to the joy of life and also death. She takes you up close and personal to exactly what she is seeing and again the common thread for me is the emotion that is drawn out of me through her work. I like the darker nature behind some of the photos.. but then to balance she has such uplifting moments. Its like she opens her soul for you to poke around in and sit a while. I love when people put who they are openly into their work.. you know how you just get a gut feeling that you relate even though you\'ve never met? Her work does that for me.

grigrigirl.. what can I say.. she oozes sensuality in her photography. Its so many things all at once.. quirky, sexy, sinister and pure. You really get a sense of where she is in the moment and she (to me anyway) screams New Orleans and shares the magick that I preceive to be there. Its like you can feel her art in the pit of your stomache and smell the smells.. as well as the butterflies to come with whatever adventure awaits behind her lense.

*** Goodman (she brings such a smile to my face.. she sees things so very differently than I do and when i see her work presented here i\'m always in awe. She is another one who takes the time to capture those things most of us would overlook and then puts her Artist twist on it so that it becomes brilliant. I\'m always excited to see her photos no matter what the subject matter is.
kiwiness.. is he coming back?? So much to say.. again Brilliant and confident and brave and soft.. .. and on and on and on.. so much talent here*** :)

I aspire to be my own hero.. but i'd like to reach the quality of these people. Take a little bit from each and create my own unique style.. I'm on an adventure of discovery and its an awesome journey.

I'm so tired. I'll elaborate tomorrow. I've spent the last 10 hours with the high school's two theatre performances, after working on it Thurs. and Friday night too. My brain is fried.

The variety of artists here is overwhelming and I could probably wake up tomorrow and list 20 more. (ie: heida, dahkota, sjcarter....) it really is hard to pick.

G'night all!!

jjbeguin : an absolutely pure eye, one senses he has the ability to come through with an image no matter what you ask of him.

Joey Lawrence : consistently startling, attention-getting images, shows an ability to conceptualize and execute at a high level, esepcially considering his age. I'd be sure to sign him to a lifetime commitment :-)

nshapiro : virtually flawless sense of place & landscape.

scalvert : a master of the "created" image, follow-through from conception to finished product.

elsapo : use & purity of color is very marketable, and again he's young — sign him to a contract and grow rich along with him.

imagineer : vision & breadth of technique, ability to "see" in different modes, technical excellence.

jmsetzler : master of B/W portraiture that goes beneath the surface. SO many of his images I resonate to.

These will do for starters, I guess.

Robt.

bear.....Thanks

You did exactly what I wanted for the thread, and I love the way you not only identified what the individual artists strength was, but you also elaborated on other unique aspects of their personalities. Excellent.

Heida - ability to reach the masses (obviously)

Setzler - deeper meaning and art

Jacko - anything closer than 2 feet.

JJBeguin - purity of taste and eye

Librodo - portraiture

Grigrigirl - everything

Kiwiness - unique images, quality of work

Labuda - photoshop and creative genius

I wouldn't need two more - that team would kill all.

Thanks, but I would add e301, Bobster Lobster, BradP, Joey, Imagineer, Scalvert, Neil Shapiro, etc.

Though if I only wanted to win, I'd pick:

1) Rackat
2) Vipermike
3) Kiwiness
4) Heida

NOBODY could beat that team for DPC scoring.

Thanks, dear... I usually don't "do" things like this 'cuz people get hurt if I leave them off. But it looke dlike your lists needed a jump start :-)

Let me re-emphasize: "This will do for starters"; it's late here and these people just came to mind immediately; there are a TON of talented people on my mental list and all deserve to be onh my "team". In fact, I'd put myself on my team :-)

bear_music : almost uncanny ability to see the light and work with it, master of the gentle landscape and architecture, proven ability to work with clients and leave them satisfied.

jejejeâ„¢

Robt.

Edit to add: unlike mavrik, I'm not thinking in terms of DPC scoring at all, but rather in terms of real-world marketability.

Okay, in no particular order:

MeThoS I've seen this man work, I've seen his work and I was nothing but impressed by his professionalism, his warmth and his ability to be patient with his surroundings and be able to make the most of what he had to work with.

Konador I love his ability to do so much with so little at times, his insight, his patience and his humor are great factors to have around any studio or shoot.

arnit His vast aray of shots, from action to landscape to portraits show an ability again, to adapt to what is presented to him and the ability to capture the moment.

byshen His insight to other dimensions that we don't always see and his willingness to go the extra mile for that perfect shot.

mavrik His eye is amazing when you look at some of his shots and again, he's not afraid to get down on the ground, climb up on the rocks, what ever it takes to get that shot, that perfect shot that speaks to you.

RANDOD300 the work he does with animals is amazing, the patience he must have at times and the timing to get just the right shot.

I know it's all guys so far, let's see, which women?

Jutilda Her work has a surreal quality about it at times and her eye for beauty and the ability to capture that beauty is amazing to me.

Jean She has pushed the boundries on some of her shots, made you look twice and really think about what she's seeing. The mood of some of her work is just amazing.

Let's see, I get two more to make it 10.......

KaDi Some of her images haunt me when I look at them while other's just make me smile, the vast difference in some of the shots is something I would love to capture some day. That and she's a lot of fun to hang around with.

And last but certainly not least:

pcody A wonderful person, a great photographer, an eye for things that just still amaze me when I see some of the shots and gives a great critique! :)

How's that?

In no particular order:

jmsetzler
John has a unique eye and an exceptional quality in portraying daily life.
The attention to detail & composition in an image are powerful.

sher9204
Sher captures soul and deep emotion in her imaging, and bring them to life in an image.
Her post-processing ranges from subtle, to artistically creative.

Sonifo
Soni sees so much life and happiness in her world and presents it in a soft, feel-good way.
Her unique post-processing is a subdued way of saying ahhhh.

Pedro
Peter is all-around amazing. His portraiture is as powerful as his landscapes.
Peter's flexible and creative in his post-processing, ranging from punch to vintage.

Kel Muncy
Kel is a master at deep, moody portraiture, invoking a feeling that reaches in deep.
Her post-processing technique delivers a powerful balance of shading and detail.

graphicfunk
Dan is in a world of his own. If something cannot be done, Dan will use his studio & lighting skills to make it happen.
Dan does in-camera, what many will attempt to do post-processing.

dsidwell
David has mastered landscapes to a level that one would expect to find in fine publications.
Shading, lighting and tones are crucial to this master of the world around us.

goodman
Les captures character and real life through her gift of making her subject's eyes speak volumes.
A strong background in art adds a twist to her compositions and post-processing vision.

scalvert
Shannon is a unique, creative and forward-thinking artist with a desire to follow his own path.
If any team were to need a go-to guy to get something done, Shannon would be the obvious choice.

Joey Lawrence
Joey is a dynamo in the world of imaging, knowing no bounds, nor the word itself.
Given a single paperclip, Joey will create a masterpiece of it through vision and post-processing.

Tough to nail down to ten, and know of dozens more that could fill the bill,
but pulling from my favorites, these ten would be my "can't do without" team.

Gringo
for his incredible sense of composition and vintage style. his images just speak to me on so many different levels. besides, he took a pic of horse spit...who wouldn't love that?!?! :)

Pedro
for his amazing ability to bring life and emotion to everything he photographs. also because he makes me laugh A LOT! :)

BradP
because of his sensitivity in all of his images and his massive amount of PS skills. and, he likes cats and drives a cool bug. :)

Joey Lawrence
because of his sense of the darkly surreal and his ability to make that look appealing to the viewers. plus, he loves old style blues music and that's just cool. :)

JPR
because of his twisted mind and his ability to project what his mind sees onto his images. and he's just downright cute...always a plus. :)

goodman
because of her ability to take everyday things and make them into works of art. also, she's a fun chick who like to laugh as much as me. :)

Nazgul
because of his sense of perfection, his dark images and his darker sense of humor. plus...Iceland...'nuf said. :)

geewhy
for his great composition skills and his attention to details. also, he's from Scotland which means a Scottish accent which means...ya know...sigh. :)

moodville
because of her artistic style and creativity. also, because she and i both have a crush on Rob Zombie. :)

Jacko
because of his uncanny ability to take photos that look like they were made with an electron microscope. also, he's just a hoot to talk with and he would always make sure every day was a party. :)

from a business standpoint, i'd be considering shooters who can go out and get the shots. not the 'dpc' shots, but the real world shots. there are a number of others, but these are the ones who come to mind immediately.

jon (imagineer)

prolific, passionate, extremely creative, inquisitive, sensitive, genuine, does not suffer fools gladly

ed (e301)

an eye in search of a moment. has the ability not just to see, but also to articulate. doesn't mince words or waste time.

shannon (scalvert)

super-creative, with the ability to engineer just about any shot needed to convey a concept

jason (JPR)

an american ed. has the ability to hit the bricks and capture what most people miss.

debi (debitipton)

a working perfectionist. has the ability to deliver razor-sharp clarity, time after time after time.

aznym (xion)

his eye sees a broader range of light than the normal human eye. somehow, he's able to render in images what he sees.

les (goodman)

she's always shooting, and it's always top-notch. she is just as much at home in the nitty-gritty industrial environment as she is with school kids. and she has the ability to make anyone comfortable with her taking their picture.

brad (BradP)

a man on a mission, chasing a vision. more skilled than he cares to admit. passionate, with a deep sense of caring for others.

gordon (geewhy)

has the ability to find an image in just about anything he sees, and make it look great.
10/23/2005 09:31:45 AM · #21
goodman - how could I leave out goodman !! MY GOD - she evokes such emotion with her imaginative array of human captures as well as others. I almost feel sinful for leaving her "off" of my list. Again and again, he images inspire me so seek the human spirit and catch it like she does.text

how about.....you you you you you?........
10/23/2005 11:02:19 AM · #23
I don't think I could just choose 5. There are too many to pick from here. Portraits are my favorite photographs. But I am a fan of the unusual and out of the box type pictures. 5 of my favorite portraits and thier artists are..

grigrigirl...for being original and just perfect.

Philos31......for this wonderful candid. I go back and look at this all the time.

DogAngel.....captures beauty so well.

christie3....because I think she is one of the best portrait photographers here.

KevinRiggs.....his portraits are great, but this image made me a fan!

I would love to see more pictures from 3amfromkyoto because this image is my favorite on the entire site.

....but if I were to be in business with these people...I would never get any work...I am no where near the ability that they are.

Mandy-

Ive been wanting to say this for a long time but the opportunity and timing had to be right.

You are an undiscovered talent. You are an underdog here, but probably not for much longer.

I have been sensing that You, Jutilda, SJCarter, tuckersmom and a few others (myself included) are about to bust out and ribbon soon. Not that getting the ribbon means you are the best, but you know what I mean. Your time is coming, and I really admire your work. Don't undersell yourself.

Besides your the 'theorhetical' business owner here!
10/23/2005 11:15:20 AM · #25
In no specific order:

jutilda: for her ability to make anything feel beautiful and mystical.I love the gentleness she gives her photos and you can see a bit of her in each of her works of art.

mystical_princess: For the emotions her photos are packed with.also for the mythical/mystical feel most of her photos have.

SJCarter: for his ability to photograph his surrounding and make them beautiful. His photos make you wish you were there.

slippy: for his ability with creative humour and his ability to capture a persons true feelings in a single moment wonderfully.

SDW65: for his ability to be versitile and still produce wonderful photos.

mesmeraj: for her ability to be creative and produce a photo that makes you stop and seriously think about it.I love her "out of the box" thinking adn the wonderful photos that thinking produces.

Palmetto_Pixels: for his ability to adapt to his surroundings and I feel is a very well rounded photographer. he can handle every aspect of photography and produce a wonderful image

bear_music: for his awe inspiring landscapes. his photos also make you wish you were there. he is also a very helpful, friendly person.

Travis99: for the emotion his photos are packed with. and his ability to adapt to his surroundings. He is another well rounded photographer but wont hesitate to try something new just to see how it turns out.

buzzmom: for her wonderful macro photos. she isnt afraid to get upclose and personal with her subject. And does a wondeful job!

all the people listed here I feel are also friendly and kind natured. I have asked all of them several questions and all of them have been quick to respond with full indepth answers. they have all helped me grow as a photographer and i am so grateful to each of them. I also want to mentionrex, hyperfocal, nshapiro, jmsetzler, kpriest, Rooster, deapee, singsunshine, and many, many others who have also been so helpful.

oops...forgot to mention crystaldm who got me back into photography after 15 years. If it wernt for her little push i wouldnt have my outlet to be ME(see my signature if ya dont understand what Im talking about here)
