Wow I really had different ideas about the shots in the celebration challenge than the placings reflect. Sometimes I'm right in line with the majority but not this week! :)
This was the most underrated shot though:

I hope you don't mind if I add an image that should have done a little better. I may be biased (and most of you might say that I am) but I really liked this entry. Yes, it was taken by my daughter, but it was a heck of a challenge for her and I think it turned out great.
I watched her do the setup which was very difficult as the pegasus was only 3cm tall and carved inside of a crystal cube. It had flashing lights from beneath it so the focus had to be done in a split second during one of the colours...and then hold the focus until she got the colours she wanted. She later adjusted the hues of the image. Considering the detail and it was taken in the dark I think she deserves a pat on the back.
She got some great comments so that was very uplifting. But looking at the challenge results...there are many images at the lower end of the vote that should have done better. I also noted, and this is probably the first time, there were no disqualifications.
Anyway..here is the image that makes me proud.

Judi | I thought that one was great and would be right up there if not 1st, I'm shocked to see it do so poorly. It's still a great pic I'm guessing people didn't think it fit the challenge. |

Thanks Owen. Yes, some people didn't think it fit the challenge. But that is okay...I am pleased that some people liked it. I thought it was a great idea and a little fantasy doesn't go astray nowadays.

Thanks, I really liked it, but I guess the motion blur was too much for most people. It was a great gig! |

yeah, but to me anything with musicians in it, just screams celebration, especially when they are in mid song poses like this one! I loved it.

Judi, you have every right to be proud. It's a beautifully-taken picture! Unfortunately these things are difficult to know during the challenge itself where everything is judged more or less equally. Maybe DPC should create a Challenge category for its "very" young members so that they can be given due recognition for their budding talents and sometimes wonderful inspiring thoughts. I think it's a bit unfair to judge their interpretation on the same level as an adult would. Just a thought : ) |

I dunno -- it's like letting a kid win at chess. If you don't do it, but find ways to encourage them, they get good fast.

Thanks troberge. I thought it would do slightly better as well. Celebration is a personal thing IMHO. When I captured this image, I remembered my friend who just lost his dad to cancer just recently. He gave me advice that I will never forget, "Spend as much time with your parents as possible. Celebrate and have fun in your times together. They'll not be around forever".
I was planning of entering Pride with my Blue Angels image (Naval Pride) but decided not to as this was more meaningful IMO.
Thanks to everyone who voted. My goal was at least the median point of 5.5 as I mentioned in the threads and I achieved that goal thanks to all.
:edit to add image

I think the field is more level than we assume. Okay, adults might be more experienced at the technical aspects, especially Photoshop and post-processing. But a younger member can beat us hands down with 'inspiring thought' and imagination. It just comes so easily to them.
And as Kita proved with her rule-of-thirds entry (scoring 5.233) she is well capable of competing.
As long as she can handle the comments! :-)

Well, that is the point isn't it. I do agree with you in general, 'coz that was my initial thought when I took a look at Kita's portfolio. But that means, they're basically in the world of "hard knocks" instantly. I guess most in DPC has a parent watching over them or guiding them in some ways and maybe it's not so bad. I was just a little surprised at how young Kita was and it made me wonder how they would react to some less flattering comment ... Sure wouldn't want the risk of them being discouraged. ; ) |

If you look up some of the older threads on "young submitters" you'll find testimony that they handle the (negative) comments far better than most of the "adults" here do. |

Are you kidding me about the baseball shot? There's way too much distraction to be a good shot. |

It's a photo of the people's arms upraised in celebration, not a shot of the play at the the plate. What you refer to as a distraction I see as the subject of the photo. |

I, too was concerned about how she would handle comments and I don't allow her to join the forum chats...but one of the threads took her fancy and she insisted on writing her opinion. I don't know how to paste the link, so I am going to copy what she wrote.Kita's comment
"I am very sorry but it does look a bit orange and bit red on the darker side. Your entry finished much higher than mine and mine was also very misunderstood. But be proud of your score because people have got some less than you.
I am only a child and I cried when I saw all my one votes but I got a couple of really good comments and that made it all better. Please look at the good things and not the bad.
Because you can use obstacles as stepping stones and they will lead you to something better.
Kita"
I felt she handled that so well. It made me very proud to know she is okay.
