I am trying to gather the views of potential voters here so just bear with me :)

Are pet photos portraits?

Can a candid be a portrait?

As far as i am concerned, both can be portraits. I've seen "portraits" of pets and portraits that were candid. but that is jsut my opinion, so take it for what it is worth! :-)

My opinion rarelyt counts, but here goes!

I feel a pet can have a portrait... in fact you prolly could make some money doing just that. I can see it now! Glamour Pets!

Although I do not think that it could be candid, regardless of the species of the subject. Candid, meaning taking a photo of someone who doesn't know you're taking it.

Pet portraiture used to be very popular. The affluent would have artists paint portraits of their purebreds, and such paintings are pretty valuable these days, depending on the artist.

I wouldn't vote down a pet photo merely because it had a pet instead of a person.

Here is an example (though be it not extraordinary) of a "portrait" shot that was caught at a candid moment. I have found that with kids, especially, candid works much better than posed because you get so much more of a natural expression.Brayden's candid portrait

I would say yes to both - but you takes your chances.
I wouldn't expect things to be so bad as it's a members' challenge, but there will likely be some who think that it must be a posed person.

There was a candid shot in a recent challenge ('Bloomsbury Candid' or something) which I think would qualify very well for this challenge.

Another question:

Is sepia classed as black and white? (or any other toned duotone, ie blue)

Duotone photos were rated down last time there was a black and white challenge. I think you can use that as a guide :).

For what it's worth, any black and white or duotoned photograph is considered within the coverage of 'black and white' in my mind... i plan to do duotone and if it gets rated poorly because of that, then so be it :)

It´s sad that so few read the threads in forum because it´s important for people to know that duotone(sepia) always is accepted in b&w challanges round the world.

The best portrait I ever took was my brother (a street-singer) doing what he does best (singing in the street)... It most certainly qualified as a candid and I had some very good photographers tell me it was 'an extraordinary portrait'... That was back in my film days so I can't post a copy of it...

But it should also be pointed out that the folks that told me it was a portrait probably won't be voting here next week :)

i *definitely* think that a portrait can be of a pet.

I *definitely* think a candid can be a portrait.

I *definitely* include duo-tones in the black and white category.

But that's just me :)

this is probably a dumb question, knowing me, but can a portrait be of a group of people?

Or a group of pets for that matter? How about a group of pets taken very candidly? Ahahaaa!

But to answer your question, I say yes, although I think some will vote it down.

Thanks for bringing up the duotone question. I was wondering about that myself. I'll have to agree that most of the voters will vote lower on it though. Sepia might slide without losings points though *shrugs* It'd be neat to have a voting guide before you begin voting on each challenge, listing things that were discussed in the forums or other possible mis-interpretations of the challenge itself. Just a thought though... I'm not even sure it's a good thought, But who knows where thoughts come from anyway they just sorta seem to appear :-P

I suffered a lot in the last B&W challenge I entered because I used a duotone image and not a 'pure' black and white' like a lot of voters
seemed to expect.

I love duotone but I´m not taking any chance this week. "Pure" b&w it will be.
