holy smokes! what a pleasant surprise this turned out to be!!! thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for the comments, votes, and views...

i had taken my son to a park to hang out while my daughter was at tae kwon do. my intention was to shoot him on the playground, but, when we got there, i noticed another photographer shooting some guys at the adjacent skate park...somehow, that seemed to grab my attention ;-)

so, i went in a laid down on the ground beside the pipe and shot 8 runs that this skater made. i was shooting in burst mode, and each run had 6-10 shots. this was from the 6th run. after about 4 runs, i had an idea as to what i was looking for and how i wanted to shoot it.

the original

the real challenge was the fading light. this was shot about 6:30pm, with the sunlight already being heavily filtered by the park trees. my concern wasn't as much for my equipment being able to capture the image as it was for how it render. with the cloudless sky, there was not going to be a huge range of tones. i was also concerned about how close in i could crop it and maintain sharpness.

here's a slideshow of the sequence.

all in all, i am quite pleased with how the image turned out. it was a tough one to watch on the scoring side because, well, this is dpc and ya just never know ;-)

some other shots considered for the challenge:

for once, i picked the right one ;-) (too bad i can't say the same for my 'corner' shot...)

so now, as i thank all of you for all your inspiration, encouragement, and well wishes, i am finally free of being mentioned in threads about those who haven't ribboned!!!

thanks again,

BTW I have no ribbon and I WISH, that I would even be named, in one of those "ribbonless" threads. Boy....how I dream of the day, only to be mentioned in one of those threads....someday....someday...
(sad but true...)

PS Maybe I overestimate the popularity and charm of the Homeless?

Congrats! With your ribbon and Nightshy's ribbon, Slippy's predictions are coming true. Now if only mesmeraj, kpriest, and I could ribbon, we'll have to change Slippy's name to Nostradamus.

Great image. I thought you were another photographer from my comment but that's a great compliment right? Great job!

not to belabor this, but i do need to send out a special thanks to jason.

he really has helped me a lot this past year. one thing he did was to make sure i had the right equipment in my hands. yes, i know that a lot of amazing work has been done by very gifted people working with lesser equipment, but i have seen the difference, close up and personal, between trying to squeeze it out and being able to shoot without having to worry about it. this shot is a great example of that. this shot would not have happened with my 300D, with my 28-80F/4. maybe for someone else, but not for me.

so, jason, thanks for all the tips, and for pointing me in the right direction!
