Slippy? Never heard of him. Kinda of a funny looking guy though.
Oh BTW, if I win donate my free membership to one of the folks from New Orleans or there abouts who have not had a chance to use their membership of late. |

That list has LONG been used as a way to record BOTH photographers you admire for their work and photographers you admire as people/ friends.
Nothing new in that certainly ever since I've been here, anyways...

I don't see anythiung in the definition of "favorite photographer" that requires me to have only people whose WORK I admire extravagantly on my list. You can be one of my favorites for personal as well as photographic reasons. Slippy has earned his way onto my list with his personality and his off-the-wall humor; he's a real asset to our community and he's a favorite of mine.
Got a problem with that?
I pay more attention, incidentally, to "favorite photos" than "favorite photographers"; that category is all about the work. If Slippy had posted a piece-of-crap photo here and said he'd donate free memebrships if it made it into the "top favorite photographs" list, I'd be crying foul about THAT...

If this thread validates anything, in my opinion, it's how stupidly serious people have become about this website.
The "favorite photographers" list has *always* been more a popularity thing than a true measure of talent.. and always will be. Talent is so diverse and subjective, and if you try and tell me that Heida is *honestly* 600 some odd favorites above jjbeguin, or crabappl3, or imagineer, or any number of dozens of other photographers, because she's honestly *that* much better than them.. I'd have to laugh.
This is just someone trying to have some fun, and .. man.. pete forbid that should happen here.. of all places.
BTW.. Slippy.. should my name happen to be drawn (yah right).. I also defer the free membership to someone else that would actually use it to their full potential. Someone from New Orleans or other affected hurricane area is a fine idea.

There is a place for this sort of sillyness and it isn't at the expense of hard earned effort for those who have truly worked toward that goal. There are always going to be dissenting opinions, and nobody can please anyone. I agree that it could be maddening to be the person that was displaced.. but perhaps slippy could offer to cover that persons' next membership renewal or whatever in compensation.. there's always a way. All this flap over a silly list.. |

Ya know...its a good thing we don't know who's photos are who's since they are entered without names. Its so sad that people these days don't have a sense of humor and have to bring the rest of the world down. No this site isn't a game, and I don't think Slippy is using it that way. Stop being so serious. Let your hair down and live a little. Life is way too short to go around angry and petty. So its a bribe, but Slippy is a GREAT guy and photographer. I'd put him on my fav list even if he wasn't offering a free membership. If Ivo or Nazgul drop from the fav list, maybe it could be there are others that are more liked. Sillyness....its a great thing. Turns adults into children all over again. So why not relish in that feeling and have some fun. OH and BTW...Ivo you have listed on your profile that you are 6 yrs old....is that sillyness I read??? I'm sure you aren't 6. If you leave because of Slippy's sillyness (I really beginning to like that word), then that is your decision. Slippy....my hat is off to you for making my day...silly. ROFLMAO!!!!

i love to have fun just as much as the next person but i think everyone who is currently on the fav. photographer list definitely deserves to be there and they didn't get there by bribe. i've always considered the fav. photographer list to be an honor and the way to get there is by hard work.
so, yeah, i'm serious about this particular section of DPC and i honestly don't care who thinks i'm "stupid" for feeling that way.

just out of curiosity, did anyone get huffy and say people would leave the site a couple of days ago when there was a request made to add heida to your favourites so she would hit 1000 faves for her birthday?

Gee.. how funny.. I seem to recall a thread begging people to get heida over the 1000 mark for favorites.. which was just as petty and silly as this is.. but no outcry there..
It's not like slippy is offering free memberships to everyone who favorites him.. it's a random draw depending on how many people do so. whoopie do. If he needs that kind of validation.. big freakin' deal. Then again, I don't really see much honor in a list that is populated by people that:
a)got popular early in the site's history and stayed there because adding popular people is the thing to do or..
b)have a lot of friends
Yes, all of the people up there are talented photographers, but I'm pretty sure that they are happy with their work and really don't need the pseudo-validation a list like that brings. Then again.. maybe they do.. but chalk me up as a person that thinks it's overrated, over-valued, and not a little bit lacking integrity.

Slippy adds a great deal to this site through his humour. As far as someone being a favourite photographer, that goes far beyond what photos they choose to post. To me it includes how they contribute to the community.
This is just another opinion. Feel free to apply the favourite photographer category in any way YOU see fit. Everyone has their own reasons for choosing a favourite, be it photographer or photograph.

| I for one (even though I have only been here a couple of months) treat favorites just like I do in IE (have to use it at work.) Favorites to me are just a shortcut for getting to somewhere I like to go. If I like looking at someones photographs, they deserve to be a favorite. Just the same, if someone is always posting interesting things in the forums, the easiest way to tell is to go to their profile; also accessed easily from my favorites. |

No, but I do recall quite clearly us getting our butts chewed off because of the injustice served you due to our inability to see your work for the art that you believe it is. I also recall how we all gripe when we do not receive comments relating to our work that we put alot of effort into. I also recall numerous threads regarding fairness in voting and the overabundnce of entries in a given challenge.
Look at it this way, why should we not be accountable to others when we desire them to be accountable to us. We are doing nothing but encouraging a form of fraud and this is not a standard that I wish to embrace. As a parent, I would not encourage my child to go this route, would you? |

No I don't, because it was earned. It's the bribed or goaded part that I find disappointing, and yes, the same was true of the Heida promotion. A favorite can be for photography, personality, site contributions, humor, etc... but it should at least be earned. The argument seems to be, "What the heck? It's just a silly list with no real value," but that's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Yes, I understand the whimsy of it, but I also remember my great respect for those on the list as among "the best" when I signed up. |

the people that added Heiða did it out of respect and to honor her on her birthday not to get free membership.....
I´d like to think the people that chipped in in that like her as a photographer or as a person....
I cant see how you can compare that to this?

i would say it is a site contribution, by making people members or renewing their membership. Personally, i dont even look at the list. It means nothing to me. I only add the people to my faves that i like to see what their up to. Also, I only add photos too my faves while the challenges are being voted on..What about the millions of people who run and put the winning images in their faves? They didnt like it when the challenge was going on?

respect and honor is stretching it.. sorry.
Let me qualify that.. I'm sure that there *were* people that added her out of respect and honor.. but I honestly don't believe that everyone that did, did so for that reason.. or even the majority.
Anyway, it's not my point. I don't begrudge her that. I'm just surprised that this is bringing the backlash from people that it is for a list that has long been known.. at least to myself and many many others, as a fun little stat. However, if enough people truly are upset over this, and see things differently, we probably have to respect that as well.
