So 5th Grade is...

*People getting upset over a list that basically says "i am more popular than you". Did i miss the room where the cool kids get thier cheerleading pompoms and football helmets and the unpopulars get baggy black tshirts, trenchcoats and thier hair combed over their face?
I want my ballot for King and Queen of the DPC Prom Dammit!

*Name calling, finger pointing, passing out other peoples personal information over a popularity contest. Hey Slippy achieved his goal so when he steps up on stage to claim his popularity prize, lets dump pigsblood on his head.

*The internet favourite "i'm leaving" drama performance. As many times as i have heard Cartman say "Screw you guys, i'm going home" I've never seen Kenny shed a tear. Don't expect the site to come to a halt without you. We respect you ability to leave (like you should have respected everyone elses ability to click thier mouse where they please), it is your decsion, not ours, if you change your mind, welcome back! But don't expect someone else to change it for you.

It was stated that Slippy was saying "vote for me, i'll give you a cupcake" like a middle school election. From what i have read on these 9 pages, it appears that slip was just playing right on par with that maturity level.

9 pages of entertainment deserves a fave imho. I've not enjoyed a thread so much since Chit and the stuffed squirel.
Keep that wheel turning Slipsta.

Dammit, it's just like my junior high days over again... I missed the pompoms AGAIN and am getting stuck in the shadows with my angst-ridden, black-wearing, Cure-listening freak friends. Thanks for opening up that old wound!

I just figured out you weren't on my list?

I think I had you there then when I got mad at certain people laughing off favorites I deleted everything and just never put you back. You are there now.

Dafty. You don't have to add me. Whilst it's nice to be added unexpectedly I don't take the list too seriously so I don't worry about how many ticks I have or for what reason I've been added! I was just commenting that I added you (and Laurie, I accidentally deleted her and had to put her back on) and you noticed within MINUTES!!!!!!

one swift poke in the eye and you'd be down :p

Nonsense you were there before. You must have added me right before I went to look at my profile for a post in another thread. I always look at comments received and helpful then that then scroll down. Either way you were there several months ago and you were taken off along with everyone else when I got mad at someone else a while back. I just never added you back by mistake. I think most just add me so they can remember who they got pissed off at.

Slippy, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I just watched you and the site let you buy your way in and bump a few photographers here that by the sheer number of favorite photographs, have been working a long time at it.

Guess I should go worry about important things instead.

Edit to add:
Slippy, I do think you are a heck of a person, have very honorable intentions and give this site some of the much needed entertainment we so desperately need around here. I personally enjoy reading your posts and shake my head at times at what a nut you are. That hasn't changed.

Buy his way into what??? A little social clique of the haves instead of hanging out with the rest of us have-nots?

This whole thing is so utterly ridiculous. This is a website in a 2-D world that we hang out in because it's fun and we share common interests. Nothing on the planet rides on someone being on someone else's list... yeah it's nice to be recognized for whatever reasons people might add you, but at the end of the day, it's just a list that will not put food on the table or anything else of importance in the grand scheme of things. If you don't like the concept don't add him. WHAT IS THE BIG FREAKING DEAL about someone bringing a little humor into a world of nothing but bad news these days???

I don't sweat the small stuff...and this is VERY small stuff.

i don't understand what makes it a social clique of the haves against the have-nots. are you saying we shouldn't set goals for ourselves and work toward achieving them? would you teach your children that if they can't reach their goal by hard work then it's ok to cheat?

So what you are saying is that because he doesn't have the number of photos that anyone else does he shouldn't be in the favorites? Let's take out the that he's offering free memberships to put him on the fav list. Are you saying that he shouldn't be there merely because of the # of photos he has listed. That's how I took it. And tell me...what do you get if you are on the favorite list? Anything? Nope, its a popularity contest. So now Slippy is popular and so he should be. I still applaud Slippy for stirring the pot.

People have goals for different reasons. His goal was different from your goal, different from my goal, different from whoever's goal. The site isn't designed in such a way that you only are allowed to add favorites because of photographic integrity and quality of work and all that... we can add faves for whatever reasons we wish. He told everyone up front what he was doing. If the rule was that you can only add someone as a fave if they have X number of ribbons, or X number of photos in their portfolios, or had been members X long, then there might be an argument. Just because you don't agree with his measures doesn't make it wrong.

I do think it's wrong to assume that everyone who did add him as a fave as the result of this maniacal thread did so purely out of bribery. God forbid that some might actually like his work and have just not noticed or taken the time to recognize that. Some might like his edge or his comedic antics...and have taken the time to recognize him for that. Some might just be broke and need a membership. Who are any of us to judge why the people who added him did so?

What exactly is the point of setting a goal to increase one's position on such a ranking when we've already established that it never has been based solely or even mainly on perceived talent but just as much on friendships, communication and so on?

I guess one could work hard to chat to more people in DPC chat (as that tends to result in various additions to the list) or to post more in the fun threads (as that is another way of making friends and bolstering favourites).

I just can't see how this particular goal has anything much to do with hard work directly? Being added to the list is surely at most a bi-product of doing well in other goals - creating images that are more popular with site members, winning challenges, creating tutorials... rather than a goal in itself?
