Ok...so i submitted this photo for the D&L challenge...
ampersand controversy aside, i received a few comments from people who decided to vote my photo low, simply because they thought my subject matter to be morally wrong...i'm assuming that many more voted this way since i received 21 1's...
unless i'm wrong, we're supposed to be voting on the quality of photo and it's adherence to the challenge, not our moral beliefs....If you don't like the subject, that's fine, but don't give it a low vote just because you don't agree with the subject....If you thought the lighting, angle, exposure or color was bad, then fine, vote it low....If you're not going to vote on what we're here to vote for, then just skip it with no vote at all...It makes no sense to give a technically good photo a low vote because it's of something you don't condone....I don't condone drugs myself...Never even tried them once in my life...But I thought it would make a gripping image in a photojournalistic sort of way...i do magazine layout for a living, and i guess it was that side of me coming into play.
and for the record, that's crushed up TUMS in the photo :P |

I didn't vote in this challenge, but when I vote, I vote on a variety of things. Part of it of course is how it relates to the challenge. I also break it up in to three technical areas of the photo, and part of my vote is based on my personal feeling toward the photo. I don't see why you should get mad at voting people for voting, at least partly, on how it makes them feel. After all, when presenting it to any audience, emotion is almost always the first deciding factor, and many times the last too.
As for people voting a photo 1 purely off of feeling, I would disagree with that also, because you do have to take in to account the technical aspects of the photo also.

Bet you were needing those TUMS about the time the voting started. ;-) You're right that this photo should have been judged on its photographic merit only and therefore should have done much better, but that's one of the things about this site that people unfortunately have to deal with. At least you know it's a good photo.

"Users should rate each and every photograph in the challenge on a scale of 1 to 10 (with "1" being a "bad" photo and a "10" being a "good" photo).
Bad to Good
Nothing about good photography trumps lousy subject,
any more than the rules say good subject trumps lousy photography...
People are permitted to feel something about your photo. If it raises "bad" feelings in an individual, it will probably get a "bad" vote from that person. (Just ask all the people who have entered crosses, churches and other Christian iconography.)
(By the way, I'd tell you I gave you a 6, but you never mark your comments helpful. :p -- I don't vote down christian iconography, either.)

I gave you a 6. It met the challenge and went a little beyond and was in focus. I didn't care what it was, just rated it's quality I hope. Sorry others don't seem to do the same. Course, there are anti-religious people that vote religious pics down, and anti-flower people who vote those down, and anti-sunset people who vote those down, and...you get the idea.

I gave a 5. It didn't pull something emotional out of me. You had great composition and it was interesting but I've seen this photo shot done a few times on DPC and it didn't elicit any sort of emotional response from me.
I don't know if you read in the forums but some people were scoring low because of a lack of "&" in titles. Maybe that is where the lower scores were coming from.
Don't get discouraged though. It's a tough room here at DPC. The CHALLENGE part of the name should be changed to CHALLENGING audience. |

No you dont. There are no rules in voting.
If people find it offensive, so be it.

I've said it before....
The TWO rules of DPC:
1. The voters are ALWAYS right.
2. If the voters are wrong, see rule #1. |

See now for me I find this photo appealing...but maybe it's because I'm a bloke! I didn't find your photo offensive! There ofcourse will be those people who do, just like the above mentioned photo from DrJones! Everyone is different and unfortunately that's a fact of life and they will vote accordingly. |

I scored it a 6 - the subject matter didn't bother me one way or the other.

From my experience here at dpc, having seen a few such drug oriented images in past challenges -- I'd say yours did pretty well at 4.9.
BTW Shane, you need to get in the habit of marking some of the comments you receive during the challenges as helpful. If you don't mark any as helpful, people will get the idea that you don't bother to read any of them.

and should be quite happy to have not been DQed for violating the site TOS -- it doesn't have to be the substance to encourage its use.
"4.2 You will not use the DPChallenge.com Service to post content or to design, manufacture, market or sell a Product that ... (viii) encourages the use of drugs or the under-age use of alcohol or cigarettes or (ix) is generally offensive or in bad taste."

Get used to it, people on this site don't want to see nasty things, they are here to have fun not as much for photography (as I been told a few times), And they certainly don't wanna hear drugs exist, not until the day they find out theyr child is an addict. And that day they start wondering why nobody else wanna see it. Stop ruining people's good fun get on and shoot colorful macro flowers if you wanna be succesful. I gave you an 8. |
