Piece of cake, Evan. It's kind of like being super drowsy and then you don't even realize you are falling asleep until it's all over and you have woken up. Not to worry - it'll be fine. |

It's not nearly as bad as you think...and when you wake up you'll feel like you haven't been to sleep at all. Be sure they give you something for nausea before they put you under and you should be fine. You might feel queasy afterwards, and you might have a sore/scratchy throat, but you should be none the worse for wear. Good luck...positive vibes coming your way! :)

A couple of times. They put an IV in my vein and told me to count backwards (from 20, I think). Anyway, I was out in seconds and woke up very groggy afterwards. No big deal.
I don't think very many people have negative reactions to anaesthesia, so you'll probably be just fine. Might want to practice some relaxation techniques. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

I was given general anesthesia once, when I had my son by emergency c-section. I had no problems. I woke up groggy and had a baby there waiting for me. Just took a little while to see clearly and wake up all the way. I understand you being nervous, I may have to get put under for a procedure in the near future and I've already been worrying about it. And truly, I have no reason to as I never had a bad experience with it, its just a pscyhological thing!
As for feeling sick, I get sick feeling just when I get really nervous, but I never had the chance to get nervous before my c-section as I was so wrapped up in labor pains. At that point I would have let them shoot me to knock me out, lol.
A friend of mine told me if I'm really nervous to mention it to the doctor and some will give you a type of sedative prior(hers was an IV) to that to ease your nerves. She said she was happy as could be and didn't even remember getting put under :) (they also have meds for if you get nauseous) Just let your doctor know you're nervous :)
I'm sure you will do great! |

I was put under to get my stomach scoped for ulcers when I was 8. Not scary at all! My dad told me to start counting as soon as they put the IV in me- I didn't even reach three! When I came to, it was kind of weird before all the drugs wore off- but I don't ever remember feeling sick. I was mostly confused because it felt like they had just put the IV in me and I was already done!
But I dare you to try counting. I wanna see how far you can get. :) Good luck!

I have had it three times. The only bad part of it is the hour after surgery in the recovery room. You won't feel that well, and all you can do is wait it out. My own way of getting through that is to find the clock in the recovery room (there always seems to be one), and set little goals of 5 minute increments.
After that, it's just a sleepy day.
You will do fine. Good luck with whatever it is. |

I've gotta have this done in a few months too. I'm pretty worried about it too.
Is there any way to dream during it? Or is that impossible since you're awake instantly after you're out? It just sounds really freaky.

A lot of how you feel will depend on the procedure ... I've had teeth extracted and a thumb ligament repaired under a form of general anesthesia, but I imagine my post-surgical state would have been considerably different following heart or abdominal surgery. |

Is as easy as falling asleep to get put under. The waking up part isn't as easy. If you're having major surgery, I'd suggest that you ask them to take out the auto-dope thing, they sometimes talk you into before surgery, right after you come out from the anesthesia. Man, that stuff really grogs you out, or at least it did both times I had it. |

I was told I needed to have my back tooth pulled last September and I'm terrified of having it done. (Besides it doesn't hurt!) I'm afraid of being put under and if I stay awake I'm afraid the tooth will shatter and it will be too painful. I don't mind the needles...it's the feeling of pulling, cracking/shattering, and digging/scraping that bothers me! :'-(
Evan, good luck!

Just make sure it captures valid EXIF data if you want to submit it to a challenge ... : )

Yes, your mouth and throat get very dry and your throat feels a little scratchy afterwards. I was given anesthetic when I was 16 to have my wisdom teeth removed. They started it with an injection of Demerol and less then a minute later I woke up looking at a pretty nurse and asking for a beer. (because of the dry mouth and throat of course)

I gagged a lot I'm told. I even threw up a little bit on the docter I think. Hehe. But I don't really remember having a scratchy throat.

Sometimes when they administer total anesthesia they will intubate you--place a tube in your airway so that there is no possibility of it collapsing (and you stopping breathing) during the procedure. Putting the camera in there can cause some minor trauma/irritation to the esophagus.
They've developed (but I think is still experimental) a wireless video camera in a capsule you can swallow. Then they can visualize the whole GI tract, and don't have to pull it back out; however, there's no control over where it looks. |

I had my gallbladder removed in march. I panic sometimes and I was great...they asked me if I wanted something for nerves, i told them sure. They gave me something, I waited in one room...they transfered me to the surgery room and I was fine. They asked me to transfer beds and I started to panic. It went something like this.
Me-
*deeper breathing*
'hey...sometimes I freak out. I think I'm going to freak out. I'm freaking out'
Dr-
'Where Do you work'
Me-
'Denso'
Dr-
'What do you do there?'
Me-
'I build radiators'
Dr.
'Where did you work before?'
Me-
...................
I swear I didn't see them give me anything in my IV. It took about 1 second I think. I woke up the room was spinning and my mouth was SO dry. First thing I asked for was chapstick. Made me WAY more comfy. Room was still spinning for awhile then everything was ok.
You'll be fine. Let us know how everything goes. |

They put me out to remove my wisdom teeth. Evidently they were so twisted in my mouth that the opnly way to get them out was to crush them in place and pick out the pieces. They gave me an IV and then once I was on the table, they gave me a muscle relaxant and the ceiling started breathing. The nurse said you're going to go to sleep now and gave me the anesthetic. She asked me to count backwards from 100, think I might have gotten to 98. Woke up on a gurney in the recovery room. felt great, was still high as a kite.

That sounds like sodium pentothal ... I think I may have gotten as far as 97 or 96, and the stupidity didn't wear off until the next morning (if ever) ...

I've been put under about 20 times now for my throat. It takes a double dose to get me out. Doc gets mad at me cause I like to see how long I can stay awake after they start the IV. I think I get to about 30 seconds. I do have a slight sore throat afterwards, but that's because they are stretching it. You shouldn't get a sore throat from just a scope though.
It's really no big deal. Like others said, the waking up is the worse part. My wife drives me home (which they will make you have someone drive you) and I usually can't remember the trip home.
Good luck. |

Hi there. Although I never had to do general anesthesia I can say I'm very experimented in this subject, because I work in OR, most of the times in the Cardiac Surgery, as what you in usa call "phisitian assistant".
It's very calm and tranquill, even when it's on life saving patients (of course in this cases we have to go faster).
If you're doing only a endoscopy, probably you'll be in a sleepy state, but not what is usually called a "general anesthesia". It's more a sedation. You'll be asleep and you wount suffer or remmenber anything at all. Also in general anesthesia when the patiens take pre-medication (the day before or morning of the surgery), some of it is to make patients less ancious and more calm, and this kind of drugs can affect the memory afterwars the take, so sometimes patients don't recall beeing in the OR and talking with us.
So don't be affraid. Even the nausea that some people say they feel afterwards it depends from patient to patient, and the drugs used. Most of it is caused by a tipe of drug for pain reliefing in the post operatory that is given in the end of the surgery, and the effect can be minored if a drug for nausea is hadded with it.

OOOoo ask for a photo... My Dad had a photo from one that he had, it was amazing to see what they were looking at!
I've had that type of anesthesia a couple times in my life, with no after effects (unless you consider chocolate addiction an after effect, yeah thats what i'll blame it on)
