Hmmm... still not working. Now you have this:

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=77230

If you copy the above into the address line of your browser, you will see that this is taking you to a "page" on dpc. You don't show a page, you want to show an image. That's why I recommended the other URL.

So if you put this into your address bar you'll see only *one* thing, you'll see your image and nothing else:

//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/300/137745.jpg

An alternative would be to use the image within a link. And maybe that is what you are trying to do. That way bloggers will see your image *and* if they click on it, it will take them to the page mentioned above. Need any help putting the link together to do this? Just ask.

Now I see why we had different image numbers. That was an extra thumbnail/link from my first insertion that I "forgot" about. It's at the end of the post now and fixed. Thanks again for your persistance in getting me to see that!

Started up My Blog with the breaking of rule # 1.

So now, I wonder, where is the best place to comment on the individual experiments. I am guessing that we will use this thread for discussing things, ideas, summaries of what we learned in general, and where we coordinate. We could also reference blog entries here and discuss them, or add comments directly to the blog.

I did note that (perhaps by default), most of you have the comments feature turned off. Under "Settings->Comments" you can turn them on.

OK, I'm blogging now. Nothing significant posted, but here it is. I'm still trying to land the book, should have it by Friday.

For now, my only rule to add to the lists above would be:
Use what the exposure the meter says is the proper exposure.

That's the one I broke on my first blog post. Not that it's necessarily in the spirit of the book exercises, because I don't think it's an example of lateral thinking.

Actually it is. It's Rule #3 on pg 29 of the book. That's the next rule I will experiment with breaking. Samples of breaking rule 1 and 2 (pg 29) are already posted to my blog.

OK so I wandered out into the garden to try to break the 'Keep Camera Steady' rule. I really enjoyed this and shot off over 100 frames. After bringing them in and pushing them through PS I have 3 which are my favourites:

The first is one of some thistles taken with a 100mm lens and a circular motion. I like the 'fireworks' that have resulted from this one.
The second is a Choisyia 'Sundance' taken in a wave motion. This reminds me a little of fish scales.
This one is mya favourite. Its some grass taken with a horizontal movement. When I got it into PS I saw 'flowing water' so to enhance that feeling I shifted the white point slightly to the blue/colder end of the scale.

So what do you think - I like em.

Blog Page Never blogged before so it might look a little crazy to start with ;-)

I just went through the BLOGs so far and I'm impressed. I wasn't 100% sure we were going the right direction to use them, but now I am. They tell the story of our experiments (well, the start of them) like professional publications. Very cool, in my view.

If we continue to use the blogs for our records, and comments, then this thread is here for general discussion and for us to bring attention to new posts.

Don't be shy--if you are unhappy with our direction, feel free to discuss. We are only at the very start and shaping our group study as we go along.

Now I see some people have broken their second rule, now I need to catch up ;)

Maybe you should create and administer one "group blog" for us as well, either for "final submissions" or as a summary of what we learn for others to use.

I'd just like to say that,at the moment, I'm having to work away. (I'm typing this on a terminal in a pub) It's painfully slow and I cannot upload images, so I'm only browsing. I've got the book and started reading - it's really inspired me, as have the images I've seen in this thread so far. Weather is awful and working hours are long, so not much of a chance for shooting. Next week I'm in Scotland and hope to get some decent photo-ops there.I hope to post some shots on Saturday afternoon, when I'll be at home for a couple of hours.

Good luck everyone and have lots of fun!

I won't be breaking any more just yet, I have a full 3 days away from home so won't have much opportunity (well maybe I might just sneak a camera into my briefcase)

Rule #3 - Always Listen to the Light Meter

Result posted to my blog. I created a B & W version as well as colour. At first I liked the former better. Now I'm not so sure.

I like this one. It makes you think more of tone and shape. It's interesting what emerges though I think I was only 50% successful. A better subject is probably needed. I don't have any correctly exposed shots to compare.

I've added the straight from camera image for my Breaking Rule #3 blog entry.

I confess I've broken Rule 2. See my Blog My Freeman Patterson Workshop Blog.

I'm going to try to get some NEW shots today to get into the exercises.

On an admin note, how do I list the group of us on my blog page, like Neil and Collette? I tried to find the mechanism this morning, to no avail. Feeling dense.

Go to your editing page, there should be a tab called "Template"

Scroll to the bottom of the edit field.

Now start scrolling up, look for the "End #profile" comment. This is how mine reads. You can copy it into yours, replacing what's there, starting from the h2 tag and ending at the tag.

Now be sure and change the links to My DPChallenge Profile to your own, and the my Prints for Sale, to your own. Or just delete them if you don't want it.

Now to publish, "Save Template Changes" and then select Republish in the text " You must [Republish] your blog to see the changes.".

We need to add new members to this list as they come aboard, but I think it will be easier with the above instructions in mind. You simply have to add a new list item for each, e.g., add a new:
  • persons-id

My blogger "template" has gone blank... is that because I have changed the template? Or a current bug in the system (i.e. try again later)?
    07/27/2005 10:18:21 AM · #46
    Neil: Great! Got it. Thanks!!

David: Mine just worked a moment ago. Did you republish?

Mine's still working. Your Blog looks fine. Try loggin out of blogger and then log back in. If that doesn't work at the top of the template editor, it says "pick new", and you can select a template from there, but you'll have to recustomize.

Help please. One of the rules I'm trying to break is the correct exposure. +3/-3 stops. My camera has exposure compensation range from -2.0/+2.0.

What I need help with is the counting of stops. I've forgotten if going from F4.0 to F4.5 is considered a half-stop or a full stop. I'm thinking that a full stop is from F4.0 to F5.0. These examples of course assume that I maintain the same shutter speed.

Sorry for asking. I could probably look it up but with a support group like this... ;^)

A full stop is from f4 to f5.6. Anything in between are just partials.
