I have only tackled new born shots once, and it was very difficult. I think you did wonderful for a first attempt.
Before I go on I have to mention I am very amateur, and most of the time have no clue. So...with having said that. When I think of babies (newborns) I think of innocence, heaven, and soft skin. All of which would indicate using light colors, and moods. I would personally try to bring out the softness in the baby's skin using artificial light with lots of shadows, and if I was using props I would make the mood light and soft. Pastels, and maybe nice fuzzy little stuffed animals, or something of the sort.
I have also seen pictures (b&w) using primary black backgrounds with lots of shadows. I think it contrasts so well to the babys light soft skin.
Personally when a baby is that young I would stray from bright vibrant colors, it just normally doesn't work that well in my opinion. I think that the baby in the pictures here is to young for those colors yet. <----on that I may be completely wrong, but it would just seem to me that way.
