The problem I see with this idea (which is small compared to the possibilities of this idea) is that for some folks, a child, flower, bug, sunset, flag IS "something different" but they would be hammered for taking those shots. Originality is subjective. I think instead of a challenge, this would work better if everyone that voted got to select ONE shot that was the "most original interputation of the challenge". This could be done every week with every challenge.
Just a thought :)

I think I have read several times in this thread that original means different things to different people. And that voters would hammer what they didn't think was original.
That is absolutely correct but that happens every week anyway :-)
I think the beauty of this challenge is seeing what everyone THINKS is original to THEM..not original to OTHERS :-) I mean..worrying about what others will vote your photo is the same concern every week regardless of what the challenge is, what part of the world the voters come from or the wording of the challenge.
I would be interested to see what peoples interpretation of "different" or "orginal" is. |

I think the fixed subject challenge would be a great follow up to the open challenge... it's the other extreme... everyone photographs the same subject :) |

I''m for this one too--I would like to see everybodys interpretation of the same subject.Everyone here has such wildly different ideas already on the same subject, verbally--- I''d like to see the pictures.

To me, voting on the same thing 150 times or so would be very grueling and boring. I understand this site is great for learning but a challenge where everyones takes a photo of the same subject is taking it to an extreme. Most of us already understand the idea behind taking lots of differesnt photos of the same subject and we should already be doing that with our subjects to find the most interesting perspective. Some lessons in photography are great for learning but they can be very boring as well. I think of this site as fun and I prefer to be able to pick my own subject based on a general theme. I guess I just like as much variety as possible. I think I learn more from seeing more anyways. And as far as the 'originality' suggestion goes, we are already encourage to be as original as we can and we should already be voting with that in mind so I don't see a need for that to be challenge in and of itself.

I think the same subject challenge would be beneficial, and yes, it would be a gruelling vote for sure. I think it would be a great lesson in photography. I see so many pictures here and other places online each week where the same subject is photographed from the same angle and perspective. I think it would be a great enhancement to the photographer's ability to look for a unique interpretation of a subject that is common. After all, what makes a photo of a flower unique? It's usually the perspective or the angle in some way... the lighting, the colors... |

It would not be too difficult to choose an object that everyone has acess to... |

Well I just had to give my opinion. I would, of course go along with whatever is decided on. I could get through anything for a week and you are right, John, I probably would learn some more things. But just this once ;? )

I love this idea, but it is important to bear in mind that whatever object is chosen should not be seasonal, and should be available to all members at any time of year. |

I would love to see this, too. Photographing it would be fun. Voting might be tedious, but also surprising and fun, too. |

Taking a picture of the same subject sounds fun to me. Yes, the voting might be difficult but it would also be a learning experience. I think the moon would be a great single subject as it would still be different for everybody at the same time. Timing would be important so, maybe, a full moon might be out.

Except not everyone has the ability to capture the moon. Needs to be something "down to earth". :-)

Are you saying you don't have a moon where you are. I don't understand. |

Let me clarify what I was getting at. It doesn't have to be just the moon it could be a moon set or ant shot that has the moon init. I imagine a lot of really nice work. |

Sorry. I was thinking in a narrow way. Of course. Just burnt out from the kid's party. (Did someone say 'Advil'?)

Karen, I had confidence in you. I thought of the moon a couple of weeks ago. The main problem is with some folks' interpretation of what a "moon" is. I of course meant the lunar one.

Oh, I know you meant the lunar one (LOL!)(and BTW thanks for the vote of confidence!) ;0) It just made me automatically think a special lense was necessary and a lot of photogs here have point and shoot cameras, is all. :-)

If we did a "everyone shot one thing" challenge, my suggestion would be money. Nearly universal to all nations (near as I can tell) with a wide enough varity to make voting bareable. |

Given the challenge for everyone to photograph the same subject, and given that voting time is 7 days, I would think that breaking up 150+ images could be rather easy and painless... |

Photographing the moon would not be much fun... unless u have a telescope to do it with...
You can't get different angles on the moon either and without the scope, everyone would be photographing a small dot in the sky... |

Ideas for single subject subjects:
Fork Spoon Knife Apple Orange Banana Keys door knobs Windows telephones stop signs stop lights

I think windows would be interesting... but not as fun as say, a spoon or another small solid opaque object that everyone should have access to... |

there are plenty of subjects for sure... voting it would be difficult, but i think there would be some great lessons for all who participated and voted... |

Woosh, Some of these are very confining. Fork, Spoon, Knife, Banana – Tuff group. Stop sign would be difficult as well. Sign – would offer much greater variety. Window, Door Knobs, Telephone, Keys, - Tree- Water –Boat-Car
These could really be fun. – I’d give it a try either way.
