Ever submit a picture b/c you knew it would do better on DPC than the one you liked the best? I just did and figure that everyone probably has done this once or twice. So dig them out and let's see'em. Time to post any picture you didn't submit for a challenge b/c it wasn't the "best" for DPC.

Minimalism

of course now i think this one should have been submitted

Gets an 8 from me :-)

Can't find any sellouts in my stack. My flaw's the opposite, if anything. I may refrain from submitting a picture I know in my heart is "better" just because it "looks too DPCish", and I want my "own" kind of work to represent me.

I have to be honest, my highest scoring pic is a total sell out - it's not even good quality! Although it was nice to have the top 10 finish, taking the positive from the situation this does drive me to replace it with something that I can be proud of - this is easier said than done :)

I ditherbated with this shot, pulling it at the last minute to enter the safer shot, which ain't doing well. LOL. I usually go with what I like, not sure why I changed my mind.....lack of sleep probably.

This was going to be my Free Study entry ... not exactly sure if I 'sold out' - rather I thought this might be considered posed, as it's so bizarre, although it simply a street candid.

I have to admit that the following pic was made for the DPC audience:

My favourite photo taken that day was actually this one:

This is the one I entered for BRIDGES II, not that it did well.

This is the one I liked better but didn't enter; wish I had.

Stone KILLER outtake, Nova. I doubt it would've scored well, but it would have garnered an 8 at least from me :-)

My recent entry to the Free Study challenge may fall into this category:

I had, originally, considered this one:

It was quite clear which of the two was the more popular image and which was the more unique and personnally engaging one. The conversion to black and white also represented a greater challenge to me, technically, which, no doubt, contributed to my attachment to it.

It was therefore interesting to note that via some of the comments left beneath my actual entry, that the colour version still did not satisfy expectations as to what such a photo should look like: for some, the sky was not blue enough or the contrast could have been boosted more; others regretted that there was no evidence of flash, that the capture could have been brighter still...

The photo, however, was shot in the morning against the light. It was foggy too. There was no light, to start with, unter the wings and body of the bird. Practically everything you see in the photo had been boosted to the hilt.

Increasing the contrast further would have blown the highlights. Changing the natural colour of the sky to a saturated blue would have falsified both the givens of the shot and the intent in terms of mood and locale. Adding another pass of dodging to the bird's breast would have washed and granulated critical details. Flash, under the conditions and at that distance from the subject, would have been imperceptible. Besides, I do not believe in interfering with nature and her creatures by strobing them.

What these comments showed me was that there will always be people who expect what is familiar, even if it is a postcard, and that there are many of them. To do both, to oblige such tastes while holding on to the truth, the thrill of executing a shot according to your own senses and values, cannot be done without compromising one or the other, particularly when the image belongs to an already widely represented genre.

If I had the submitted the black and white, I'd be a few points poorer for it, but I would have actually contributed something not everybody sees every day.

I like every outtake in this thread better than the one submitted. :)

I wanted to submit this one:
//www.sabphotography.com\minimalist1.jpg because of the colors and I think I did pretty good with the set up EXCEPT for the dang powerlines. If the weather is good this weekend I'm going to reshoot it, or just clone them out.

I took this image for last years' "March Free Study" challenge but did not submit it:

It is one of my favorite pictures I've taken in digital but thought voters would feel the sky was faked. Others agreed with that assessment.

Later it was entered in the "Best of 2004" challenge when that type of sky processing was more acceptable to voters and finished 7th!

As the pendulum swings it would probably be less acceptable again now. LOL.

lowlght, I pm'd you after reading your comment on my photo, not knowing you had posted the question here too; sorry! As I said, that is an easy effect to achieve just by "zooming" the lens during the shot. I have the best results when shooting at a slow shutter speed of a second or so, and therefore at a higher f-stop. It's a fun technique to fool around with, sometimes the results are surprising.

Glad you liked the picture, I wish I had entered it in the BRIDGES challenge. I'll never know what it might have scored, but everyone who has offered an opinion has had good things to say. It's always appealed to me. In fact I have a 4X6 of that shot framed and sitting on the piano in the living room.
