This is a way underrated photo that deserves at least a top ten. A very creative and well done photo with subtle reference to wind as in wind instrument.

That was one of my few 10's.

I absolutely agree with the previous posts. This was the one that I picked to win, and that I still feel deserves it. That said, I remain proud of my FLAG photo, and am somewhat ashamed of those that would vote 1 or 2 for this shot simply because it is a Flag. No one can convince me that anything about this shot deserves 20 ones and twos.

Edit to add some others that I thought were underrated:
Good job to the winners and to these:

I for one gave you a 7 on this photo. I do feel however that you are making a quantum leap when you suggest that the mere reason some people gave you 1 & 2 scores is simply because it is an American flag. You must appreciate the fact that there were oodles of flags and that some people may have scored flags lower than they deserved to be. That however, in my humble opinion, is NOT to be translated as being an anti-american bias.

Darlene, I half agree with you. I don't think the 1s and 2s are necessarily because its an american flag - its just the weird way photos get voted on. I have seen soooooo many photos on dpc that do NOT deserve a 1 or a 2, regardless of their subject.
By the way.....I gave you an 8. I was sick of seeing flag shots (ANY type of flag), but your photo - technically speaking - deserved more than my emotional response.
If only I had the solution to a fairer voting system :-(

I will agree with that, I will edit to say "Flag" instead of "American Flag". Thanks for the 7 :)

Its not necessarily because they like/dislike your flag shot, its probably because an american flag is one of the most common subjects you seem to find in the this place. There have been hundreds of them in the last two or three years.

PS. I didnt vote.

Thanks very much for the 8. I know there are many out there that take great care in voting, I really appreciate your response. I could understand a couple of low balls, but 20?????? for one of my best shots???????

Darlene - you had the best flag shot of the bunch and it was very well done technically. As a matter of fact you had the highest rated flag shot of any type. You should feel good about it. Don't let the 1's and 2's get to you. You also had quite a few 8, 9 and 10's.

As for my underrated favorite:

I am proud of where my Flag photo finished. I did not expect it to be above average because of people views and the quantity of the same photo. However I am disappointed in all the one and two votes that all flags received [over 650+] but that̢۪s the right of the voter I guess. To everyone that voted from 1 to 10, thank you!

I liked it but thought it left a little too much to the imagination for DPChallenge.

This to me was underrated in my opinion.

Of those 20 flag shots 18 were of US flags. Now please take this as a genuine question and not a slight on anyone, but why do you think it is that only besides one canadian, the only flag shots were taken by americans? I know the majority of the members of this site are American, but the ratio of american to non american flag shots is completely disproportionate to the proportion of Americans here. The American flag is fairly photogenic (at least as far as flags go), but I'm still surprised to see so many, its not like the US is the only nation with a patriotic citizenry, American's are certainly not more homogenous or less creative than other nations - so why then do so many US citizens decide to take pictures of their flag and submit them here?

Once again, don't take this as antagonistic... I'm genuinely curious. And if you are wondering - I didn't vote on most of the challenge - so I didn't see enough flag photos to get flag-fatigued and vote them low.

As for the other photos (I don't want to completely hijack the thread :P), I think Librodo's was a bit hardly done by, I fully expected some people to score it lowly due to unusual take on the challenge - but below 6 ??? That surprises me.

Thank you for your post and I may be able to answer your question from my point of view if you would be so kind to read my description. Hope it will help answer some of your question.

My wife is Roman and when she came here for the first time, she could not believe how many flags we have flying in this country. She thought iw as hysterical. I had never really noticed before, but as we drove downt he road ( past car dealerships, banks, etc), I think I counted over 100 flags in less than a couple of miles. I think they are just more prevalent here. In Italy ( and maybe other countries) they have flags but mostly just on government buildings.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I chose mine because it is a bold and beautiful image that was not only moving in the wind, but showing signs of the toll the wind can take on it. The weathered but proud state of this particular flag also parallels US political affairs somewhat; therefore, I thought it to be an image that was not only asthetically pleasing, but one that said something as well.

81st place, I just loved the composition of this shot.

53rd, a very cool, subtle shot.

If I was to answer this in full, we'd have to move into the political rant forums.
I'm proud of who I am and where I'm from, but I don't feel the need to wave my flag all the time. In my opinion there are many more interesting things to capture, that define my country (both in terms of landscape/geology and culture) much better and in more interesting light. The flag is like a hamburger, it's easy and convenient but not good for you in the long term.

That said there are good flag photos, John Setzler's

to post an local sample and the raising of the flag af Iwo Jima in WW2 as was mentioned in the other thread about flags

Back to the original entry on the thread, why would so many give this 1s or 2s. I really don't think the link to the challenge is that obscure. If anyone gave a 1 or 2 to this shot, I would love to here WHAT WERE YOU THINKING! Just kidding with the all caps, but what were you thinking?

I'd be happy to get a 5.8 with a dark shot like that ... mine usually end up around 4.2 instead. I'm not sure I'd call 31st out of more than 200 entries "under-rated" exactly. Those low votes may have nothing to do with the link to the topic, and may just reflect how much the viewers liked the picture.

Isn't that some sort of woodWIND instrument being played?

Wow! I'm humbled... I thought it was a pretty mediocre shot personally. Not what I had intended to do (I wanted reeds blowing in the wind at night using rear-curtain sync flash, possibly framing the crescent moon in the background; unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating). And then I saw the other grass/reed shots in the challenge and figured I'd get a 5.5 - 5.7 based purely on originality (not to mention the fact that at least two of them were better executed than mine and placed well.

Thanks for your comment.

I must admit to giving some very harsh criticism on the wind challenge. Some of the photos just didnt seem to depict wind. Understandably the "wind" instrument one makes sense, but someone blowing bubbles?

Many of the photos that I rated a 3 or below were for the plain fact that the photos had a complete disregard for quality. Since when have artifacts or "jaggies", noise or crap exposure been alright? Since never. Just because you have a el-cheapo digital camera it doesnt mean you cant produce quality images. I used to own a Canon PowerShot A20, and I got some of my best images from it.

Artifacts or "jaggies" are caused when the image is badly compressed or made too large. A simple way to lose some of the artifacts is making the image smaller which "hides" the obviousness of them.

I'm sure that there is someone who can make a tutorial on how not to get artifacts in your photo.

Please understand that sometimes people want noise on an image, it might not be to your taste but that's not to say that it's wrong. Also you will find that there are those that decide to use an abstract rather than a literal interpretation of a a challenge theme, on many occasions this can be a breath of fresh air :)

An open mind can be a great asset in the creative world of photography.
