Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is an amazing shot. I'm not going to be able to find anything to suggest for improvement here. I think that your crop is perfect. The inclusion of that little strip of land at the bottom really enhances the vast skyscape. The tiny shadows of buildings there are what gives the viewer a sense of the dimension of the shot. The toning is very well done - the blue cast brings out the sun rays, and enhances the storm and turbulence.

Great shot!

This white-on-white piece really catches my eye. Your focus is just soft enough to give the whole piece a sort of cloudy feel (very appropriate given your subject). Compositionally, I think you have done a good job of breaking up the monotony of a centered subject by roting it just a bit, so the heads of the angels are nicely staggered.

I think I would like this just a little better if there were slightly more contrast between the angels and your background. Other than that, fantastic!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is a wonderful example of a classic still life shot.

Composition: I love the arrangement of the roses here. I think that having some in the background is a great idea. I also like the color of roses you have chosen.

Focus: Your use of a very narrow depth of field is a good idea - the background roses are very well blurred. My only gripe here would be that the plane of focus is just a little bit in front of the main rose in the shot. I think that caused you to over-sharpen just a little. If the front edge of your main subject were in perfect focus, then the narrow depth of field would be perfect.

Lighting: The bottom of your shot is perhaps a little bit dark. Maybe a reflector or a small light coming up from underneath would fill in those shadows just a little, without ruining the mood created by the dark areas.

Good work! I hope to see more of your work in the future.

This is an interesting idea for this challenge. However, I don't really find much about your execution that grabs my attention. I agree with some of the other commenters that the cord in the foreground is a bit too much, and that whatever is in the background is a little distracting.

Your subject didn't offer much in the way of color or contrast for you to work with. The whole thing is very monochrome and flat. Perhaps a little more dramatic lighting would have been more effective.

I hope to see more of your work in future challenges!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This photo is absolutely stunning. The colors and saturation are wonderful. Also, I really like the composition of the shot, with the island just off to the left of the sunset.

I think many of the low votes were due to the challenge topic - most people were looking for a more classic representation of "still life." This is, however, a very nice landscape.

I hope to keep seeing more of your work in future challenges!

Greetings from the Critique Club.

I like the expression that the turtle has in this shot. However, there are a number of things you could improve for this shot:

1. Focus: Your plane of focus doesn't seem to include your turtle's face. That draws the eye of the viewer to the back of the turtle, but that is covered up, so attention is lost.

2. Composition: There are a few elements in the photo that seem to be out of place. That red box in the back doesn't seem to add anything to the shot, and the white piece of paper in the foreground covers up most of your subject and more than half of your photo. It seems that you just took a shot of the turtle wherever he was, without giving any thought to composition or other elements in the shot.

3. Challenge topic: Most people would not consider a shot of a live animal to be a "still life" shot. I'm sure many of the low votes were for that reason alone.

I see that this is only your second submission in about 18 months! I hope to see more of your work in the future. Just take your time and think about your shot to make it look just how you want it.
