| 01/02/2009 09:03:36 PM | Run over - human vs. animal!by thomasjessenComment: You know, I love art and freedom of art and that ability to express our creative sides and obviously, this is Life..it happens and it's unfortunate that it does happen. Some people look at photographs and ask themselves "why am I looking at this...why would I want to see what has been captured?" So....my question would have to be on this one, what you, personally, think that others whould see in this or better stated, why would we want to see a photograph of it?
You'd be right in saying that I can turn away from it and don't have to look at it but, on the same hand, it is one of the entries in here and I have to wonder out of all of the millions of other shots that could have been taken and entered, why enter this one? What was your motive? Are you young and this is fascinating to you? Is it shock value?
And, now, I'm clicking off of it because Life is cruel enough and I love animals enough to know that it happens, I just don't want to see it in a photograph in front of me in a Free Study where anything else could have been photographed. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 01/02/2009 12:26:32 PM | Carousel girl by MelethiaComment: Congratulations Melethia!!!! What an absolutley BRILLIANT shot!
I love the way that you have explained quite softly that you were SHOOTING THROUGH GLASS! *smile* I can't find a way to say this as nicely as you have but, the mere fact that there seems to be some sort of fanaticism towards focus in some in here just completely blows my mind. They are missing out on some really wonderfully meaningful shots by being so hung up on technicals! I'm glad that more than not, others saw the true value in the shot and got past the "technicals, technicals, technicals". :)
Actually, I LOVE the outtake of this little girl with her head bent and the angle that you shot it on. It was such as meaningful, wonderful shot that truly captured her fascination with the carousel. It tells an entire story with her in-depth fascination!!! Absolutely stunning shot!!! But, I also understand, given the comments about "focus" why you didn't use that one in this site. You have a real knack for capturing people and I beg you not to compromise that because of those who are sticklers for technicals. To do that, we may as all just shoot the same thing and see whose technicals on it were best. :(
Keep up your brilliant work, Melethia because there are enough of us who truly see it's beauty!
Congrats again!!! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 12/31/2008 01:24:45 AM | ... is a day offby colorcarnivalComment: You know, Santa may run around the world in one night but, he works 365 days a year to be able to run around the world in one night!!! Fuel prices have been a drag.
Really love this shot, Michelle. It does remind me of a Norman Rockwell!!! Oh, Woman...blow this up and frame it! You really could be in advertising. :)
This score was FAR too low for this shot......
Shoulda asked Santa to strip and put a red bow on his whoha!!! ;) | Photographer found comment helpful. |

There appears to be monitor-schmootz at the top of the image. |
I SO agree with you on this. Why should it be considered a "no-no"? Since it's not well agreed upon as to where the lines are in this rule and is so ambigious, even to SC and it is stifling in interpretation...so much so that I don't think that I'll EVER use anything that could even remotely be considered "art" or a photo within a photo ever again in a shot now. |

LOL...yeah, been to the Dairy Queen TWICE in one week! The calories ended up as a "couch sit" for a week! ;-) BAD GIRL! BAD GIRL!!! :) |
| 12/16/2008 02:03:16 PM | Land Of The Setting Sunby J-MeComment: Originally posted by loriprophoto: Thanks for your recent comments and adding to my favorites. I just wanted to say that this can happen so easily. A while back I entered this for a challenge and just by chance left the paint brush in the frame, not thinking that it would be considered a work of art!!!!!! If the paint brush wasnt there it would have been DQ'd without me even thinking of that rule. Heck I just put some paints on a piece of card and swished them around, who would think LOL. So I was lucky and the rule can be very subjective so just keep on truckin' these things happen.
Edit to add: I think the rule has got much more strict since I did this though so today it would probably be a DQ |
LOL...yeah, thank you Lori! I think that the rules just became a little more "subjective" as to what is considered "art" and just how much of a photo is considered "too much" or "fooling". It's hard for us, as entrants to decipher where those lines are when SC can't decide within themselves.
Actually, in looking at your shot (I hope that you framed it afterwards! It's really kind of cool!) I think that had yours been DQ'd, a LOT of others would have to have been as well! Where is the line between a shot of some pencils with lines drawn from them and the tips of the pencils photographed with the majority of the shot being the lines drawn by the pencils and what you've done here with the brush in it? It's such a fine line that I think everyone should stay completely away from anything to do with art or photos unless the rule has more definition to it. Even then, it seems that during the recent discussion thread about this very rule, people can't agree on what is considered "art". Even things like statues/displays/cemetary stones are considered art (which is true!) so, where are those lines? When is it considered legal and when is it considered crossing that line? *SIGH*
Anyways, thanks Lori!!!

| 12/16/2008 11:06:13 AM | An urban morningby HighNoonerComment: Don't let anyone disuade you from your creative and artistic expression in this shot because it truly is a beautiful shot!:) Those who harshly criticized it are the "technical hounds" who tend to only see a photo a great piece if it's technically within "brilliant" realms. They ignore "artistic/creative" shots.
Always remember that what sinks in here, flies elsewhere and what flies in here, drops like a stone in other places. There are current professional photographers in here who make a very nice living in the photography realm and yet, get their pieces torn to shreds in here. So, take this with a grain of salt because it only pertains to people in here who have had their tastes trained towards a certain look in a photograph. :) Hang in there!!! You have an eye and talent! Remember too that photography technicals are a skill....creativity in a photo is an ART!!! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
