Challenge: Sunset or Sunrise (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Sony DSLR-A200
Location: Ontario
Date: Dec 6, 2008
Date Uploaded: Dec 7, 2008

We haven't had any brilliant sunsets or sunrises for the past couple of weeks due to cloudy weather...BLAH....Winter!Even then, the landscape around me for a great sunset/sunrise picture is not picturesque. So, I created one for Woody with a picture of a sunset that I had on file. Woody seems to have enjoyed it anyways. Oddly enough, the desk lamp that I had beside Woody seemed to cast a glow on him that made it seem like the sunlight was hitting him. Hope that everyone likes it. I was actually quite amused by it all. Had a bit of a laugh at it as I was editing it. I smiled at how "real" Woody seems to be becoming to me now. I think I need to get out more. It's getting a little worrisome.

Score bet: Well, who the heck knows anymore? I'd bet that this one will haunt me with 4's all week, if not lower???

Seems to be that I'm a roll with requests for validation now. :(

I got my inspiration for this shot from LydiaToo's ribbon winner in the Feast Challenge. I had taken a shot of one sunset a few days before the challenge (the ONLY sunset that we had with a break in clouds in a couple of weeks). Unfortunately, it turned out BADLY! Overblown sky, (sun area) over reddened, unrealistic colors and the whole realm...including OOF. So, I scrapped the idea. I had the image up in Photoshop, unable to repair it to any DPC standards in and of itself so, when I saw LydiaToo's ribbon winning shot with a glass up in front of a photograph on her monitor, I decided to bring out Woody and put him in front of it in the same way. *SIGH* If this one gets DQ'd, I'd have to say that with someone else doing the same thing and ribboning.....well, I am questioning being here at all.

POST CHALLENGE:

I have to say that in reading the rule over this past week and discussing it with everyone on the thread, I really and truly still cannot see how the wording of this rule shouldn't be changed. I had NO intentions of "fooling anyone" with this shot. I figured people would know that I had a backdrop for a Woody...afterall, who would capture a great sunset and put a Woody up in front of it?! *smile* I wasn't trying to "circumvent dates". I HAD taken both shots within the challenge period. Woody in front of a monitor was "live".

Ok, not going to beat a dead horse any further. I really believe that this rule either needs to be completely clarified or, it should be overhauled greatly!
Disqualification Details
You may include existing images or artwork as part of your composition as long as the entry does not appear to consist entirely of a pre-existing photograph in order to circumvent date or editing rules or fool the voters into thinking you actually captured the original photograph as a live scene.

I just saw this... *sigh* I'm so sorry you followed in the path of my demise. *sigh again*

I agree that the rule needs to be changed. It is ambiguous and, with the punctuation as it stands, actually says something entirely different than what they mean. *sigh yet one more time*

I'm sorry I led you astray. *yeah, another sigh*

I SO agree with you on this. Why should it be considered a "no-no"? Since it's not well agreed upon as to where the lines are in this rule and is so ambigious, even to SC and it is stifling in interpretation...so much so that I don't think that I'll EVER use anything that could even remotely be considered "art" or a photo within a photo ever again in a shot now.

LOL...yeah, been to the Dairy Queen TWICE in one week! The calories ended up as a "couch sit" for a week! ;-) BAD GIRL! BAD GIRL!!! :)

A while back I entered this for a challenge and just by chance left the paint brush in the frame, not thinking that it would be considered a work of art!!!!!! If the paint brush wasnt there it would have been DQ'd without me even thinking of that rule. Heck I just put some paints on a piece of card and swished them around, who would think LOL. So I was lucky and the rule can be very subjective so just keep on truckin' these things happen.

Edit to add: I think the rule has got much more strict since I did this though so today it would probably be a DQ

LOL...yeah, thank you Lori! I think that the rules just became a little more "subjective" as to what is considered "art" and just how much of a photo is considered "too much" or "fooling". It's hard for us, as entrants to decipher where those lines are when SC can't decide within themselves.

Actually, in looking at your shot (I hope that you framed it afterwards! It's really kind of cool!) I think that had yours been DQ'd, a LOT of others would have to have been as well! Where is the line between a shot of some pencils with lines drawn from them and the tips of the pencils photographed with the majority of the shot being the lines drawn by the pencils and what you've done here with the brush in it? It's such a fine line that I think everyone should stay completely away from anything to do with art or photos unless the rule has more definition to it. Even then, it seems that during the recent discussion thread about this very rule, people can't agree on what is considered "art". Even things like statues/displays/cemetary stones are considered art (which is true!) so, where are those lines? When is it considered legal and when is it considered crossing that line? *SIGH*

Anyways, thanks Lori!!!
