This is commonly known as Indian blanket flower (Gaillardia) in the family Asteraceae (sunflower family). They grow wild in Kansas, but I've noticed a lot of people plant them in their gardens. I just love the bright red and yellow combination.

I really like the way those petals spiral around each other.
This looks just like a plant that grows around here called Buffalo-gourd. Very similar to an entry I made in the purple challenge last fall (a bit of a stretch for the challenge and my centered comp failed miserably)

I'd be curious to see what yours looks like fully opened.

There is a kind of moodiness with your composition. I think that the shadows really add drama. What about cropping out the thin shadow on the left? I think it might detract a bit from what you have going here.

That's some root system! There IS enough detail to see the 2 cotyledons (seed leaves) just to the right of the lowest part of the stem. Cool shot!
