My first reaction is a feeling of cold and loneliness. So I suspect you hit your objective. For my taste, the photograph is to bottom heavy, leaving the top of the frame full of that bleak, bright, sky. Not much in the way of mid tones or shadow detail, but I appreciate that this may have been your intent, and I believe that it contributes to the motif. I suspect it did not speak to the viewers because of the "soft focus" via the Gaussian blur as well as the bottom heavy composition.

Cheers,

Ben

Are they looking for their buddy with the broken wing?

Something very interesting about the presence of the bench. I'm not sure why, but it's intriguing.

ETA: Is she joking? I just read her comment...I assume it has something to do with her nit pick thread. Ok, I'm sure she is joking.

Love it. I was pleasantly surprised to see the color entry and was thrilled to see this version. Both are great, and yet feel different. The strength of this photograph is the composition. The lines leading to the sun are impressive, wonderful execution. There is a change in tone in the field that gives the illusion of sun rays, taking me back to the original tree. This only works in this version.
