An event about to happen (the rat hole). An event passed (graffiti in the night). The durable stones, which will surely last longer than the humans and the paint. You remind me that simple elements in a photo can transmit varied meanings. You also remind me that story telling is at the heart of many great photos. And to give the viewer leeway to make up their own story to fit the photo...

Again you send me back to my growing up days in England and my views of churches. The symbolism of the arches and the age-old stone which is enhanced by this gritty black and white rendition comes over in a very stark graphic way. You remind me to use these techniques.

You suggest to me an allusion to the past. Looking backwards in time. To a pr airy. To each viewer whatever that viewer is reminded of. I grew up in the outback of Australia and this bear resemblance to some of my young dreamtime. Less is often much more and in this case, the viewer can allow their mind to wander, remember, and recreate. I am learning. It is the hints, subtleties, the senses which an artist plays with. As done herein.

You teach me that it is often the spontaneous action which yields the sensual image, rather than the carefully contrived. Your image is sincere and that makes up many times over for its failings in composition and quality. In fact those human failings simply add to this image. I learn.

Blocking the view partially by looking through a keyhole, through a gate, or through a hole cut out in cardboard are all ways of directing the viewer's gaze, so you teach me. It is a tool worth understanding more about.

Looking upwards and from dark to light has a certain symbolism, you remind me. Finding those locations that are imbued with mood, such as this one, is a worthy pursuit. I will have to get out and about more.

You teach me that muddling together light and dark shapes can confuse the eye and mind into looking without seeing the obvious. In this case, I have to check myself and ask, is it the white or the black he wants me to look at - what are the shapes. It is like a visual puzzle.

You teach me that by removing colour the viewer can only appreciate tone and form. The bw rendition yields a tranquil, sometimes passive image, which has its place as you show here.

You remind me that it is natural to make a trade off between a dark region and a light region when exposing a sensor. Often the two cannot be achieved at once and in my opinion in real life the eye and brain are registering one or the other - not both. Your choice of revealing the sky enhances the mystery of the road and the woodland and imbues the image with some moody feeling. HDR techniques remove that feeling in order to gain a forensic look at the world. 0.02 cents worth nothing at current exchange rates.

You remind me that the eye often travels from a blur to clarity. Always there is the need for resolution, understanding, sight in the human mind. Like someone being drawn to the light away from the dark my eye travels from right to left.
