The Pavilion by Night b&w

The color version is very beautiful with those lovely blues and hints of pink in the sky, but the B&W really makes you appreciate the shapes & geometric patterns in the roof AND those stars really pop visually. From the B&W version I get a stronger sense of a symbolic juxtaposition/relationship of the man-made roof of the pavillion and a natural "roof" of the sky full of clouds and stars. The pavillion with it's roof over the stage provides entertainment for the masses with all those empty seats. But so too, does the night sky put on a lovely show to the entertainment of those who take the time to look skyward every once in a while. I really love the tones and contrast here for they are spot on.

Wow, for a second I thought this was something you would see outside a museum of modern art - in fact I thought that this might be one sculpture at a Museum of Modern Art that I have passed from time to time but never stopped to visit. This composition has lots of WOW factor. Love the tones and contrasts here and that sculpture takes center stage. The triangle art really pops off the page being that it's tones really pop off from the dark sky above and the ground below. Love the shapes of the repeating pattern on the triangles and each one is razor sharp with details from the one in the foreground to the last one in the back. Great job.

I love the perspective on this one. It projects the viewer into a seat on the bus such that we are sitting in the seat across from and one seat over from this girl. We take a glance to see who is across from us and what they are doing. Tones are good. I wonder if you could have used a higher f-stop and/or slower shutter speed and captured the subject, the interior of the bus AND some details of what is outside the bus. At times I don't like the blown out light coming through the windows and other times I think that it is perfectly suited for this photograph because it is what is on the inside that is our main subject and one does not want to busy the scene to distract away from that. One critique I do have though that I think would greatly improve the composition is to crop off the top 1/3 of the photo. That is just empty space that is doing nothing for the overall composition.

Wow, the conversion to B&W and your post processing of the image really gives this photograph a highly detailed drawing! Love the play of light and shadow in the lion's mane - really get a detailed look at the groves and fall of the 'hair'. Exposure is good with nice range of tones and contrasts that make the image visually pop off the page. The compositional element of cropping and bringing us face-to-face with the lion was a good choice. It brings your main focus/subject up front and center for your viewer to get an up close and personal look.

Great capture of this little monkey. Love the tones and contrasts in this composition. He appears as if he is trying to hide behind that branch. Great capture of emotion in this shot. Sometimes I get the feeling that the monkey is shy but curious while other times I get the feeling of him being a little fearful. My only suggestion is that I think that the composition could be strengthened if you zoomed in closer or cropped closer for just a head shot. Bringing the viewer in closer brings us closer to the subject not to mention we would have those eyes staring right back at us in larger detail and thus it would capture our attention even more strongly.

Wow, I love the textures and lines in this close-up photo of the Agave leaves! Love the tones. Beautiful textural lines and I like how the two leaves come together to show off those lovely curves within this square composition. I noticed that the portion of leaf that curves toward us in the foreground is a little soft compared to the sharpness of detail in the leaves throughout most of the rest of the image. This happens with macros especially if you use a lower F-stop. Hmmm, you shot this at a 3.5-5.6 aperture - you might want to try a higher F-stop like an 8 or more with a slower shutter speed (you will need to have a tripod for this) to get a richly sharp details on both the forefront & background.

What a sweet and enduring photo of a childhood! A perfect candid 'captured moment' in time as the young child bends down to look or pick the flowers. Love the details and the tones in this one. Very sharp and spot on. I like the slight sepia tone for it adds a bit of a nostalgic feel to it - like it is a capture of days gone by. Composition is wonderful I don't have anything to suggestions on how to improve this one - it is picture perfect as it is.

Love the tones and contrasts on the bridge, the mountain and sky. Cloud formation looks dark and threatening; heavy with chance of a thunderstorm. I also like the perspective and slight angle of the bridge in the composition. The lines lead off to a vanishing point in the horizon. This adds interest to the photo. Overall the tones are very good, but what I find a little odd is the tones and 'textures' of the rushing water. It is a little flat and a muddy light grey compared to the other darker or richer tones throughout the rest of the image. Not sure what to do in postprocessing aside to maybe play around with the burn/dodge tool. I don't see camera info as to what the aperture setting and shutter speed were. A faster shutter speed would capture the action of the rushing water with a more still life quality but you might sacrifice detail in the background. A higher setting of aperture like F8 and above would give you some rich details in both foreground and background but might make the river a blur (but maybe a good motion capture) with a slower shutter speed.

This is a wonderful B&W father & child portrait with excellent tones/contrasts. I'm not too keen on the soft blur on the outer edges...especially the blur on your hand. It looks a bit odd when juxtapositioned with the sharp level of detail in the faces.

Three days and 3 fun expressions in this great triptych portrait study. Love the expressions of the man as he blows soap bubbles. That first one says "Oh, that did not go so well." The second is "Hah! Look at that one! That's my best bubble!". And the last expression is just him blowing the bubbles again and having fun doing so. He is having lots of fun and we cannot help but smile and laugh with him because his joy & enjoyment shows. The B&W tones are great and I love the border presentation of this portrait study.
