Lilyby MelethiaComment: Trading Post.
I like this photo's use of bokeh. Very effective IMHO. On the otherhand, I thought a couple of the white petals were a bit washed out. This is not my favorite of your work by a long shot. I gave it a 5 because it seemed average to me. |

Fog, lightsby MelethiaComment: Trading Post
Nice, simple shot. However I am not sure I get the feeling of desolation. I was not able to vote, but would probably been in the 5 - 6 range. |

Stair shadowby MelethiaComment: Trading post.
Excellent picture. Wonderful abstract. Super colors and lines. Nice textures. Obviously I am not the only one who thought so, given your high ranking. Well done. I have no idea how to improve on this image. I would have scored this an 8 or 9 had I not been out of town.

Rebridgedby MelethiaComment: Trading Post.
This is much better than your original bridge shot, with much more going on in this photo. The postprocessing really makes this photo IMHO. I was out of town and could not vote in this challenge. But I would have given it a 7, possible 8. I'm a sucker for soft postprocessing. |

Earth tonesby MelethiaComment: I like this picture. The color and focus are very strong. The lighting seems a bit harsh to me, though. ...I can imagine the table lamp with the shade removed sitting on the floor just out of the frame. A little softer light would have worked better IMHO. I am one of the 94 who scored this a 6. (Interestingly, I chose an earth tone setting for my shot, too. Yours, however is much better.) |

Sixty one secondsby timfythetooComment: I loved the blues in this photo...and I think the color carries the whole picture. But I had problems with this photo. It seems to me that the focal point is hard to find...is it the boat on the right or the horizon buildings or the sky or the water. I can't tell and my eye is drifting all over this photo - admiring the blue but not able to rest anywhere. Also the buildings and their lights seem out of focus, which is important because my eye wants to rest there...if only because the soft lines in the sky lead down to the buildings and the shoreline on both sides of the picture do the same thing. Perspective seems to draw me to the buildings and their lights, and I am disappointed that they are not crisp. I recognize that I am in the minority in this instance because I voted a 5, even though I wanted to go much higher because of the blues. |

One year later - "Why is daddy still gone?"by timfythetooComment: Trading Post
I like the composition and colors. Certainly meets the challenge too. I read your comments...your son and wife are gems to participate this way. I would have scored this a 7 or 8. A simple, yet effective photo. Plenty of emotional impact (although I did not get the watch). Well done. |

4th of July can't come fast enough ($350)by timfythetooComment: I'm afraid this one doesn't do too much for me. While it is appropriate for the idea of "indulgence" all of the packages are just too busy for my taste. Colors are good. Focus is fine. Not much more I can say. I would have scored it a 5 had I been in town. |

Morning sun and shadows.by timfythetooComment: This shot is superb. While I suspect some did not think the shadows were the focal point, and I guess they are right, I love the interplay of light and shadow and would have scored this an 8 had I not been on a trip and been unable to get online. The colors are terrific too. This would have worked exceptionally well in the green challenge as well.
I like the lighting (duh) and I also like the placement of the walk. While I might ordinarily use the rule of thirds to shift it to one side, in this instance I like your decision to put it down the middle. It's leading lines take my eye right into the shafts of light. I also like the tonal quality of the greens. You have a good range of green, from light leaves to detailed shadows. Well done, I'd say. |

Maybe it is easy being green.by timfythetooComment: As soon as I saw this topic I thought to myself, the Kermit pictures will be all over this one. I was out of town I didn't vote, so I don't know if there were others. It meets the challenge, but kermit (like yellow ducks and woodies) is pretty predictable. That said, the idea is pretty clever and you have executed it well. The technical aspect is fine. I would have scored this a 5 or 6. I suspect Kermit's star power helped with the ratings because 28 scores at 9 or 10 seems high to me based purely on photographic merits (IMHO).
Since my own scores are pretty mediocre, maybe I'll incorporate Kermit, duckie and woodie in my next picture to see if it makes a difference. ;-) |
