Taken in the neighborhood where my dad lives. Half of this very small development is done and occupied - the other half of the little circle has yet to be built, so it's kinda blank on that side. They do have the street lamps up, though! Very cool to wake up to fog one morning - not something we get a whole lot of in central south Texas.

Post processing: rats - I don't have "history" turned on for the laptop's install of Photoshop... pretty sure I did levels, curves, USM (since I nearly always do), then converted to B&W via desat. Upped the contrast after conversion. Resized.

A beautiful mood captured here. Love the lone tree in the background.

Hey, sorry this is so late I've got SO behind with critiques.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It really meets the challenge well, but as an image I'm in two minds about it. I do like the sense of desolation that is definitely achieved, but there seems to be just a bit too much flat gray. Maybe a slight cool tone would have avoided this, and/or slight burning to vignette the b/g a little.
I think the composition does work well, but I think I personally would have tried a perspective looking down the street with the lights on the left, fading away (if the surroundings allowed it of course). Its just that the perspective on the streetlights seems to lead out of the frame rather than into it.

hello again,

i am sorry.... i think i underscored this one.

looking now i really like it. everything is right about the photo. unsure what is wrong..... i think (maybe hope) that others just did not see it the first time.

i really like this one looking at it now. well done. sorry for not scoring it properly the first time.

Trading Post

Nice, simple shot. However I am not sure I get the feeling of desolation. I was not able to vote, but would probably been in the 5 - 6 range.

Trading Post - i gave you a 6 on this one, but I am pretty sure that must have been very close to being a 7 (alot of good that does now though right?) Clean simple shot that fit the challenge well. Way to go on catching the fog. I realy like the line that the three lamps make and that only one tree is visible against the slight shadow of more in the background. I do wonder what maybe a slight tint of color would do for this. Congrats on yet another 6+ shot Deb. So when would you officially be out of the middle yourself?

Trading post...
Excellent shot Deb! The fog is incredible. The curb gives you a nice leading line right into the thick of it. I'm surprised the lights weren't on. This seemed to be a really hard challenge to score in for sure.

This was one of my favorites. Unlike many of the gorgeous landscapes that scored higher with other voters, I thought the fog, the composition, and the overall feel nailed the challenge.

Deb, I LOVE this photo! It's so simple, but has such a strong appeal. The fog and the mist do in fact look so desolate, yet it looks so interesting! Just added it to my favorites! Wow!

the word desolate is a very lonely one, and this photo i think comes pretty darned near, the fog is a perfect touch to give that feeling and the lamp post is very well presented and, in a great angle, i will give this a high score becouse it is pretty close to what i picture desolate to be.

I like the feel of this image the dreariness (sp?) of it. I can't think of anything that I would want to change about it.

Very cool shot. I love foggy, misty shots. Never seem to find the right occurence to try one myself. A good sound composition, with a nice use of leading lines. I like how the lamp post is tall and grandeur, as if standing sentinel over it's surroundings. The line of lamps like that, with the line of the curb, and the fog, makes me think of 'cold war' type things. Like the border walls, or no man's land, dmz type of thing, and guards posted along the line. Nice job.

Nice use of leading lines, leading into the fog, into nothing, into desolation....well done! That lone tree adds to the photo, too, gives us just a little bit more to look at.

Sorry, but I am not convinced of Desolation.

Comp minimalistic, blacks too deep, whites not there, nice line, light flat, ok texture

amazing photo, i love the fog and how you can barely see the trees fading away and the light fading away also.

I've glanced at all the thumb nails and this one jumps out at me. Both a mental and a physical place. Most people, coming up on this scene, would have walked right by searching for a 'lone tree' or a person to put in the image. This 'empty' scene says so much more. thank you. 10
