Never A Dull Moment

Easily the best. How could there be a better 'action' photograph than this great picture of some kids delighting in the pure joy of movement for the sake of it? Not going anywhere; not doing some tedious bloody sport; just jumping because it's the most wonderful fun-to-be-alive thing for a group of young friends to do. The fact that it's happening before this sombre institutional backdrop makes it all the more wonderful. 10. And an Order of the Thumb:

Congratulations on doing something different; something with a bit of the spark of life in it. You'll get blasted by the voters: 'too yellow'; 'no action'; 'dnmc'; blah, blah, blah. Poor, sorry bastards. 10.

Oh yes. That's very good. We pass each other by, deeply insulated by our gaze, by out hats, by our glasses. I wonder if we walked the streets naked, would we make eye contact? I think that we would, for lots of reasons!

This could be a Gunnar shot. If it's not, then you are as good as he is, in which case congratulations are in order. I admire the capture of childish sentiment without the usual cloying sweetness. It feels authentic.

It's a lovely portrait with sublime lighting. And he looks like a very nice gentleman, which is actually a tribute to both of you.

I hardly ever like photographs of flowers, but this is a 'hardly ever' moment. It's no coincidence of course, that you chose the title you did. For the same reason, this lily is also the symbol of the Easter Rising of 1916 in Ireland, celebrated in WB Yeats's great poem of a 'terrible beauty' ΓΆ€“ Easter 1916:
"... We know their dream; enough
to know they dreamed and are dead.
And what if excess of love
bewildered them till they died?..."

I wish you had used a less expository title, because this could otherwise be so many things, all of which are more interesting than a bottle cap. A strange illuminated sign. A pleasingly incomprehensible art installation. A vending machine selling the latest energy drink (Blue Bull, perhaps). A bus stop shelter at the North Pole. Lots more, all fun. Are you quite sure it's just a bottle cap?

Well, that's very fine. Not the absolutely ideal form perhaps (nor is mine), but it's certainly arresting. I thought it was a piece of fruit from the thumb. I'd say that it was a tongue-in-cheek work, but that might risk going from the sublime to the ridiculous. 8.

The repeating table motif with its attendant shadow play is arresting but it's the implied story that retains the attention for longer ... why are all the other tables empty? yes it's cold, but it's late morning so there should be some coffee drinkers, surely? and where is the other person from the occupied table? taking the picture, perhaps? but if so, why is the woman at the table not looking this way? and what is she doing with her left leg? It's good fun, this picture.

Beautifully simple in both conception and execution, and all the more effective for that restraint. A high class portrait.
