Glass Daffodilby shareinncComment: Nice symetrical reflection, cropped nice and tightly - however I will paste in some comments I have added to a considerable number of pictures in this category.
----
My only concern is, as you may have guessed from the amount of discussion on the forum re "painting with light" is whether it is painting with light.
Having been lucky enough to judge what is now a few hundred competitions in the last 30 years I feel I should say the first thing that happens is that they are sorted and any that do not immediatly seem to fit the category are dumped (hard but a fact). This is why so many competitions also run an "open category". Your picture, as impressive as it is, would, I feel have been rejected at this stage. "Painting with Light" has a fairly tight definition in photography but still allows a lot of lattitude for creativity.
I suspect that your scores may not reflect what the picture is worth which is a great shame. I believe if I was judging in another category I would have gone higher.
I do hope you understand my reasons for marking it down

Mortar and Pestelby orussellComment: There are some beautiful pictures in this challenge and this is another one of them. Personally I would like to have seen it cropped a little tighter. There would still be enough black to leave the pestle and mortar "leaping out of the page"
I will copy a note though that I have copied to some other people in this challenge.

I believe if I was judging in another category I would have gone for an 8 possibly a 9 because you have managed to getget the light to work the textures so well.
I do hope you understand my reasons for marking it down

Swinging lightsby pitsamanComment: At last one of the few pictures that can truly be said to fall into the photographic definition of painting with light.
However I find it a little distracting and unfortunatly cannot say why. Covering up the little "bit at bottom centre" helps for me.
It does remind me very much of the technique used by a friend of mine who is a watercolour artist.
She understands that her paintings do not work for me -
Glad that you understood the challenge though

Painted Applesby StevePaxComment: Unusually good shot of an often overdone (and badly done) subject. Possibly a little too much black on the left - I would be tempted to crop it but still keep the apples out of the middle.
Here is a comment I have put in some others which will explain my mark.

However This is such a good picture with so much potential (cropping for a foot advert, cropping for an AA advert furniture advert - that I cannot mark it down.

24 hour serviceby dtouch1Comment: Interesting shot but could do with more depth of field. So much of it is in focus I think it would be worth getting the rest.
I have copied this note onto a few others.

Dreamsby deafwolfComment: If you crop the top of this picture off - It immediately reminds me of the Mona Lisa - Immensly so.
I absolutly love it. By the strict photographic definition of painting with light, I do not think it would have got through the fist stage in any of the professional competition I have judged. BUT it is such a good picture, I cannot mark it down for that. I am not sure of the original resolution etc, but I would consider DEFINATELY submitting it to a music magazine as a cover photo (in which case DO NOT crop the top!)

Biologyby pcodyComment: A fine picture - love the background it really sets off the subject. It is unusual to get a blue otr partly blue background to work with a "natural subject" (except a person). However I will copy some text that I have added to a couple of other entries.
